Thanks for the tour, you two are a lot of fun. I have a 38 V16 that is almost the same color. The body style is slightly different, it is the formal sedan, 5 passenger and has extra windows in the rear. Body style 9019. Their were more than 17 V16s built in '38. I have heard around 200. Still very low production. My body style was the second most popular at 43 built. The 7 passenger sedan was the most popular at 60 built. I bet the 17 refers to your specific V16 model.

It is good to see that this car has survived. I last saw it in July of 1968 when Roy Schneider had it for sale in Southern California. (It was $7,000 and I only had $5,000, so it goes!) At 30 years young it sported what looked like the original black paint job and a nice set of Guide Super-Ray driving lights, possibly dealer installed. Have just reviewed the color slides I took at that time: Sidemount mirrors are an addition after 1968, have never seen this style on any '38. Chrome has been added to the headlight buckets and parking lights, not authentic. The V-16 emblems on the sidemount covers were present in '68 - these were standard beginning in 1939 and a dealer could add them to your '38 if you felt left out. The all-chrome dashboard grille is a later lashup and is beyond inappropriate. Should be brown plastic with four chromed horizontal bars on each side of the clock. Engine compartment looks mostly like it should, major exception is that the generator needs to be the 1938-only low mount friction drive unit with the top-mounted air scoop for cooling. A beautiful survivor auto and who can guess what 80 more years may hold in store for it?

The Maharaja of Jaipur in India, one of the richest persons in the world at that time had one of these. He used this as a guest car for his important guests. Unlike other cars like this which had factory built bodies, this one came without a body and had one built in England. It was used by the Government of Rajasthan province after kingship was abolished in the early 1950s. It was in regular use till the 1970s when it was retired to the State Motor Garage. It has been maintained well and appears in the Vintage Car rallies in Jaipur and other cities in India.

Maybe you are wearing too many hats in the production of these segments?

What a car! A big car for May West's "big personality", LOL. Very interesting, exciting and fantastic to see for an ordinary person like me. It is a museum piece. With those long running boards Andrew could add 2 guys on each side, one on the A-pillar and one on the B-pillar, that would be a total of 9 + 4 = 13 passengers.

Believe it or not, my father owned a Cadillac V16. I think it was a 1939 model. He bought it used around 1941, I think. I was six years old then. I remember riding in the jump seats. I remember the local gas station, owned by Julius Kubiac, where my father used to get gas in Elgin, IL, and Julius always wanted to admire that V16 engine every time we pulled in for gas. Junior Mudd A 1938 Cadillac had somewhat similar styling as a 38’ Chevy, a 38’ Buick, and alot of other vehicles from 1938 because it was the general style in that era... So it could also be said that a 38’ Cadillac looked like any other car too, albeit higher quality, the same way a Cadillac is today.

This car has been restored and restomoded. The restoration was a bit clumsy in places. The odometer shows 90k miles so it's had a lengthy career after hauling Mae West around Hollywood. You're certainly not looking at the original leather on the front seats. Maybe the door panel leather is original.

SO MAYBE THIS CAR WAS FINISHED AT CADILLAC'S CUSTOM BUILDER """FLEETWOOD""" 1937 WAS THE LAST YR CADILLAC HAD FLEETWOOD BUILD FOR THE FACTORY .IT WOULD LATER BUILD SPECIAL CARS SUCH AS THE 1957-8- ELDORADO BROUHAM.
