It was consensual, and there was no business pressure or employer-employee. The *actual* complaints against Louis CK also confirm that, so you basically just have media guys spreading poisonous rumors as facts and the crowd eating it up.

Good joke. M’dudes he’s talking about what he wants happens. If you want to defend him knock yourself out but film and tv are collaborative, and he’s got distain for that. You’re saying he’ll shit on anybody but him having a say but he would’ve walked away? Dude is a narcissist and narcissists love to trap people in gray areas.

What happened with Louis was totally unfair, they are all so desperate for a bad guy to blame for everything. They tried to ruin his life without hesitation, just to feel like they're superior. He's accomplished so much, his fans are loyal & grateful. Plus, we can already see that the Hollywood snobs & mainstream media are losing their credibility like never before, they've shown us all how unreasonable they are. I totally agree with the "TV dialogue" thing. My wife has been re-watching 'Gilmore Girls' lately, and the phony dialogue drives me nuts. Worse than the overwrought dialogue, is the rapid fire delivery. There's not even a beat between lines. No character takes a second to absorb what's been said to them and then respond. Every line exchange is like a ping pong game

@@UltimaPowers Pretty much every comic and host joked about Amy Winehouse for years. Conan, Jay, Norm... People were just waiting her to die while making jokes about her. Press was making jokes too, and you know, audiences were laughing. Then when she died people were like "Oh, so tragic and untimely!" Not to defend NPH, but there's an element of hypocricy, as it's largely the same people who are judging him which were still laughing to all the rehab jokes just a minute before Amy Winehouse died.

God it bugs me listening to old clips of Louis and Jim yammering back and forth under the pretext of being friends, knowing that Louis' entire career got destroyed basically for engaging in the EXACT same kind of perverted fetishes that Jim does in his private life, but simply not being as vocal about it. Meanwhile, Jim won't have Louis on his show anymore; he won't even address it or utter a SINGLE word in Louis' defence. Middle of the road Jimmy sure knows the art of opportunism.

Mikey G - What makes you think Louis didn't have consent? When you ask someone "Are you ok if I..." and they say "Yeah," that's called consent. Louis is in the exact same camp as Jim in terms of being a weird fetishist, yet Jim hasn't had him on his show since the allegations broke, which is infuriating. The way it's looking now, if Louis ever comes back again, it will most likely be 25 years later like Pee-wee Herman.

but you know what though - I think there's too much of a rush to wholly defend him on the other side of the spectrum. I'm a fan of his and have been since my early teens, I also think it was right that he was called on his creepy behaviour. It wasn't assault, it isn't comparable with other now well-known predators in terms of severity or harm, but it is comparable in terms of it plainly being a man who was highly respected in his field not using his better judgement and maybe putting women in uncomfortable situations, and I think that is what has made him get lost in the mix with people like Harvey Weinstein who is a brutal and violent predator. I'm a woman and I know if a man had done to me what he did in front of those women I wouldn't really be fazed, or I'd at most be like "ha you're gross" and leave it at that - but that isn't to say the act itself is okay or that any other woman should have the same response. He did a shitty thing and we're living in a time whereby people will react however they're going to react to it. Most people are reasonable and smart enough, and I think in time he could have a big career again. But he did definitely do something wrong.

R Layla I don’t agree with how it turned out. People do stupid things in life sometimes as they are learning how to live and it was obviously a bit much but it was between him and the girls not him and his fans. He didn’t commit a crime nor should the me too movement have greatly affected his life and career. You can argue me all you want but you wouldn’t if you lost your career over being a bit over the top with your sexuality so long as it was not criminal in nature. Yeah, Louie went with the mature reaction and his date dried up like a….date. His point stands though, what does she want him to do? Hit minors? She cognitively knows he did the right thing but her biology doesn’t like it, sort of like when a man cries in front of his lady, she will say it makes her happy to feel so close and open with him, but inevitably she dries up because it’s seen as “pathetic” for a man to cry no matter what people say about it being a good thing.

I love Louis' comedy and shows, but I really dislike this instinct to pit different artists or styles against one another. Was the world of the show Harris was on elevated in its reality and a little glossy? Sure, but that's the style they chose. They weren't even aiming at the thing Louis is saying he prefers. And guess what? They made a ton of people laugh out loud with their approach to their show. Louis knows that laughs from an audience are honest. Comedy is like a sport. If the audience laughs that means you scored. It doesn't matter if you ran the ball in or threw it. You scored. And no kvetching from someone who thinks you should have scored a different way matters at all. I also find the constant complaints that "people don't talk that way!" to be of very little interest to me. Have you ever listened to the way people actually talk most of the time? It's BORING. Every show is going to be written for something approaching hyper realism or something very unrealistic or something in between, and these are all valid approaches to the work. If you claim that only one approach is valid then you are boring in your approach to art. You do you. Hopefully you will be successful, but other people will be too.

Total vapid nonsense - along with Big Bang, Two Broke Girls, that Charlie Sheen show... horrible wastes of time that are pushed on network as “funny” and “comedy”. Filler GARBAGE. True NPH story which tells you how random showbiz is...I was working on a pilot at CBS that was casting the same time as HIMYM that was far more in demand to actors than it. Neil desperately wanted our show because it was created by very prestigious producers and he tested (auditioned for the network execs) literally right before HIMYM and we had to let his agent know right away he didn’t get ours so he was available to go in for them like 30 minuets later. I mean his agent desperately tried to get him on our show and cancel the HIMYM reading but no, he wasn’t getting our show. He was ice cold in the business and wanted to be on a show (ours) that looked likely to work and would be good for his career. The result: our show failed and was cancelled after 13 episodes, and HIMYM made him incredibly rich, famous and an Emmy winner. Showbiz is literally playing the lottery.

One of the first examples I saw of what they're speaking of was Clerks. Very astute and flowing conversation. It was great, and to absorb everything being said and going on took more than one viewing. One of the first examples of the awful side of the same coin was Gilmore Girls. No words ever out of place, quick snappy comebacks, but to the point of being completely scripted and unreal. Now, it's an anomaly when a script isn't written in this fashion.

The thing is, there are few writers who are capable of putting out entire (or almost entire) episodes of comedy from their head; even Louis took a lot of time to write a shorter season. HIMYM was a fun for what it was like Frasier - it's a farce based on familiar characters like a warm blanket; when it's a show like Louie, you don't know where the jokes lead to. It's also a risk because you're putting it mostly on one person's brain to make the show; HIMYM was good early on but hit a nosedive because writers and scripts changed little by little instead of just one creator shitting the bed.

It’s network TV. What does Louie expect? You don’t get Seinfeld/Friends/Office numbers of viewership without Seinfeld/Friends/Office type of humor. Curb on the other hand, or Lucky Louie or IASIP get to be what they are only on HBO or FX where they won’t pull huge numbers. Apples and Oranges. They pull different audiences. No point in being bitter and judging them by the same standards. I also don’t find NPH all that funny but a lot of people do / did in HIMYM. Show would not have lasted long if that weren’t true.

Meh. There have always been different styles of comedy, whether live theater or TV. Maybe everything doesn't have to be "Friends," but it would be equally boring if everything was some version of "Louie," IMO. Also, it's called show "business," not show "art." TV shows are largely about getting eyes on the screen, and if "banter" shows are the ones that make that happen, that's what's going to get made. Shows that generate large revenues make it possible for networks to take chances on shows that may have more limited appeal. Just sayin.

I think most of the comments for this are missing the point of this video. Whether or not you liked NPH as an actor (I for one think he's incredibly charismatic), the problem CK has with most sitcoms is their lack of sincerity and realistic dialogue, which he believes has to do with most people who write comedy as a "craft" not actually being funny. I don't think that he's inherently saying he's better- that's not really his point. He made his show to give a contrast to most of what he'd been seeing on tv. And you know what? Since Louie came out, a lot of tv shows have gotten better in terms of sincerity and attention to detail.

I think you guys are missing the point. A point made by Louis himself when he explained why what he did was wrong. He didn’t ask random women, he asked subordinates who he was the boss of. Women who’s salary and job itself are decided by him. He said he thought it was ok at the time, but now realizes that asking his employees is what makes it a problem. This has been explained many times. Employers cannot ask their employees for sexual favors.

Not sure I completely agree. If the dialog is clever, witty , and of a high standard it does not have to be rooted in realism. Frasier is a clear example. In a similar vein Aaron Sorkin's West Wing dialog seemed artificial yet enthralling. Sometimes we want our art to lift us out of the banality of everyday life.

Exactly. NPH is a much better actor than pretty much any comedic actor is (in terms of acting chops) and in HIMYM he shows both his ability to play a convincing over-the-top comedic character, as well as his ability to nail important and emotional scenes. In terms of acting, he was miles ahead of any "comedic role" that I've seen, apart from MAYBE Steve Carell in The Office, and the award is not for best "comedian" it's for best "comedic actor". It's well deserved IMO, just because it's not Louis' cup of tea doesn't mean NPH didn't do an amazing job in that role.
