This tutorial is an example of why I love your videos. You don't just share and talk about your successes but you also show what you consider to be your failures and you explain to us why you feel they have failed. From this, we learn through your experiences the pitfalls of watercolour painting and how to avoid them. That is why you are such a great teacher and why I share your videos in a FB Watercolour Beginner group.👏👏👏

Thank you for the hard work creating these videos. I am sure the outtakes are exasperating but fun to see on this end. I don't know how many speeches and presentations I have gotten tongue twisted while giving. In those situations I certainly couldn't do a retake but eventually I just accepted that they were going to happen occasionally. Filming is much more challenging and demanding.

This was very useful for me, seeing all your notes. Sometimes I paint something, and I don't like it, but I find it difficult to see exactly what's wrong and how I might improve it. Your tutorial's also shown me that I might have to have several goes at the same subject before I get a good one. Thank you very much, Louise.

Still life is very difficult to paint by and large. When I started to paint, my instructor had me paint the cliché pair of pears 🍐…. I’m glad I left the exercise aside after multiple failed results to continue painting something else. However, your grapes are exceptionally beautiful! Maybe when I’m very experienced I’ll paint a pair of decent pears :)

Thanks for the preview of your grapes tutorial, Louise! One question, when I see the white highlights on each grape, I was thinking that maybe you'd refrain from painting water in those areas, so as to prevent the paint from spreading there, but it seems as if you do cover the entire grape with water for each layer, right?, and then just carefully avoid the highlights when applying color...? I think I have been using too much water in general, I'm afraid my paint would flow across the entire grape.
@LouiseDeMasi3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lydia, yes that's correct. I talk about this in the tutorial I'm making for Patreon. I do a few things. I use a smaller brush so I've got more control and less paint and I paint around the highlight but I make the highlight larger because the paint will creep into it and make it smaller. I use a tissue to dab at the highlight if the paint creeps too far and towards the end of the painting I use an eradicator brush to remove a little bit of paint where the highlight sits. If I was to leave a dry space where the highlight sat the paint could drift to the edge of the water and cause a hard edge around the highlight. I wanted soft edges around the highlight which is why I wet the entire grape. There's so much to think about when you paint in watercolour.

So much fun to watch. How do you decide if your painting is failed, pls?
@LouiseDeMasi3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Karen. The reasons vary. Sometimes it might be a composition problem other times I might have made poor colour choices or I might have ruined it with the background I painted. Sometimes I might be trying too hard and I fight the paint and overwork it. Then I can see on the painting that I struggled. I find painting in watercolour is never easy.
