Figo Preto is a common name of that type of figs with multiple slightly different strains and Black Madeira just happened to be one of those strains that were introduced to the US. There are strains of Figo Preto that circulate in Europe that are quite different compared to those in the US. Some of them are more vigorous, some have more fruits and some have larger fruits but they are all Figo Preto

Hi, there! I have both, Black Madeira and Figo Preto. Although they are very (Very) similar to one another, there is no doubt in my mind that there are very subtle differences between them. Both are very highly recommended me! My advise, as explained in my video on comparing the two, to those attempting to keep their expenses down, would be to purchase Figo Preto. Kind regards, Lou Monti

Well Mr. Lou, I bought what was supposed to be both specimens. Only the Black Madeira cutting has a lot of Mt. Etna traits in the leaf structure. Now at this point I’ve lost 2 1/2 months on this stick. I do not believe I will be replacing it. The Figo Preto wins lol. But I still hear it calling my name…….

Hey Lou, I’m so glad you discussed about your cutting that you have planted in ground and took out in the fall for storage. I planted a black Madeira in ground and I didn’t know when to take it out of the ground. Do I take it out when the leafs fall and pot it with good soil or should I do it now in September?

After complete dormancy, Vito. Then, place it in a pot or grow bag using any good potting soil mix, including any personal additives you are accustomed to using, as well. Good luck! Lou Monti

Hi, there! I purchased that particular Black Madeira tree that way, as a tiny baby. My other Black Madeira was started as a cutting and is growing on it's own roots. I am having absolutely no trouble growing Black Madeira on it's own root stock! Regards! Lou Monti

Lou Monti's Figs Tulsa Oklahoma. They have put on a ton of growth since getting them in small boxes off of fig bid. I should have topped them at 7 foot.
