I travelled to Dhaka and took part in the 21st Feb International Mothers Language Day commemoration. Being part of this day opened my eyes to the significance of this date and made me realise just how important it is for the people of Bangladesh.. and the core of their culture.

Thank you Carrie so much from the bottom of our hearts for taking the time out to join us in happy but yet emotional day in the remembrance of our martyrs who gave their lives to have the right to speak and defend our language. This vlog was very heart touching and we won’t forget it, it will always remain in our hearts ❤️ I have heard from many non Bengali speaking people talk about Bengali poetry, songs sounding very sweet and being one of the most sweetest languages in the world according to a UNESCO report and 21st February International Mother’s language Day was created by UNESCO as a mark of respect and honour to Bangladesh’s victory for their language and culture during East Pakistan (now modern day Bangladesh) Just in case you were not aware Bangla is the same language spoken by Bollywood stars Shaan, Arijit Singh, Kishore Kumar, Rani Mukerji, Jaya Bachchan, Koena Mitra, Kajol, Mouni Roy, Sharmila Tagore, Shreya Ghoshal, Kumar Sanu, Alka Yagnik, Sushmita Sen and many more. My motherland is a developing country that has come a very long way since our inception in 1971. We have had many challenges and obstacles thrown our way but now the tables have turned and we are developing to become a modern and developed country soon in sha Allah. We have taken over many countries by GDP, economy, currency, PPP, foreign reserves, social indicators, education, women empowerment, poverty reduction, exports and many more. Our infrastructures are developing at a fast rate but more needs to be done, and more is to come from our government and we won’t stop. Many countries are doing business with us and that means a lot to us. We have amazing islands, coastlines, hilltops, rivers, jungles, waterfalls and more. There are lots of activities to do in Bangladesh and that is why many Bangladeshis that live abroad especially the younger generation absolutely love coming back to Bangladesh because it’s fun and the vibes are amazing, they enjoy the culture, traditions, cuisine and plenty more. Thank you again Carrie for this wonderful vlog, we really appreciate it ❤️❤️

Oh wow! You are getting to experience Bangladesh quite in-depth ! My (late) father too was in that rally, at the time he was a freshman in university. He was always very quiet about it and only told me when I was probably already in 8th grade. He just made an off the cuff remark, if translated in English, goes like "When police started shooting, we jumped the (boundary) wall of the High Court (campus) to run away (from the shooting)." "যখন পুলিশ গুলি করা শুরু করে, আমরা হাই কোর্টের দেওয়াল টপকাইয়া পলাইয়া গেছি।" That was quite a surprising revelation for me. It was also a surprising revelation for me to know, around the same time in my early teens, that it also happens to be his birthday! 21st February! He was very quiet about it all his life. He was a very honest man and tried his best, all his life, to honestly serve his country, and never accepted any bribes, something that is common in Bangladesh and something Bangladesh is infamous for. Well, we/I wish Bangladesh well, and wish her people peace and prosperity and opportunities to have a healthy, prosperous life! May God Bless Bangladesh and her people and flourish her Bangla language! "আল্লাহ বাংলাদেশের মঙ্গল করুন আর বাংলা ভাষাকে আরো সমৃদ্ধ করুন!" Much love from the USA. 🇺🇸🇧🇩

Bangladesh was the first country to launch Meena when a film about her struggle to go to school, called 'Count Your Chickens', was broadcast on national television in 1993. Meena is a UNICEF project consists of: Comic books; Animated films; Posters etc. which focuses on child education, especially girls education. It also deals with people even well meaning ones who might have preconceived notion about girls ability to succeed in different areas. At that time, there's only one tv channel which like BBC, only used Bangla in Standard form. In this cartoon, they talk in local language which was quite charming.

Bengali is the 7th largest speaking language in the whole world. It is spoken by whole of Bangladeshi people including the people of neighboring Indian provinces of West Bengal, Tripura, Assam, Bihar, Udissa, Jharkhand and some parts of Nepal and Myanmar. Moreover, over 30 millions of Bengali speaking people live in different countries where they speak their mother tongue with their fellow countrymen. The sacrifice for the protection of this mother tongue was essential when the then West Pakistani Governor Mohammad Ali Zinnah declared at University of Dhaka that “Urdu, and only Urdu, shall be the state language of Pakistan”. Then Bengali was the spoken language of majority people. The East Pakistan (Now Bangladesh) had more population than West Pakistan. I profoundly express my thanks and gratitude to you for selecting the occasion of this year’s 21st February program as one of your You Tube Vlog video. Have a nice stay in Bangladesh.

Hi Carrie, This is Syed from New York. I’m a Bangladeshi artist living in NYC with my wife and our daughter Bibhaboree since a decade. I sincerely bow my head for, yo have been making vlogs I’m my motherland. This my different ID that I’m subscribing your channel with. Truly speaking, western world tends to portray countries like Bangladesh in a demeaning fashion whereas we have so much authentic and unique to offer to the rest of the world. My countrymen have been contributing to the world and lives on earthe in science, mathematics, architecture, literature, theatre and most importantly fetching wright to speak own mother language for each and every nations and ethnicities. It’s pity that we were colonized and and looted - which made us ‘poor’ but you can see the development in 50 years after independence from Pakistan. Look at Pakistani economy and where Bangladesh stand as today in global GDP ranki. I express my gratitude once again for your efforts.

It’s my pleasure.. I think it’s time to write a new narrative. I have had a tiny backlash here from people saying I should show the poverty instead of the modern but my belief is that story has been written a million times. We need to show the other side.. to encourage others to come.. and I will stand by that and focus on that. I can see things shifting (this is my 3rd visit).. so it’s great to celebrate the positives, of which there are many 😍

It's good to see you here. Thank you for paying homage to the language martyrs. By the way, in the last segment of this video, people showed you a book "Meena". Do you know the back story? "Meena" is a spirited, nine-year-old girl, who braves all the odds. Its an animated cartoon series that was created by UNICEF to educate children and their families about various social issues(gender equality, education, health, and child labor) and human rights in a fun and engaging way. The name “Meena” is common across South Asia. 97 percent of urban and 81 percent of rural children and adolescents in Bangladesh recognize Meena. The bookseller was not able to communicate with you due to the language barrier. Just do your own research and you will find many more reasons to create a shorts/video on "Meena".
