I grew up making this as my maternal mother and grandmother were from northern Maine. We made this every year at Christmas for gifts. We made lil balls and dipped the balls into chocolate. Mom would add in shredded coconut and put an almond or walnut on top of the chocolate! It's very rich! Oh dear we didn't make our balls egg sized that would be way too big! We would kind of flatten the top and bottom of the ball so they wouldn't roll around. I grew up in a double-wide trailer and there were times we were very poor but we always made these at Christmas time, no matter what. Awwww we always picked flowers for May Day and made home made May baskets and would take them to the neighbor's door. We would ring the bell and then run away and wait to see the neighbor be surprised about May flowers in a lil basket!

My Aunt Martha used to make us potato candy. She rolled the dough out, and spread peanut butter on it it. Then she rolled it into a log, refrigerated awhile, and then sliced it. I think she called them pinwheels. The dough was made from the potatoes, butter, and powdered sugar.

My grandmother and I would always make potato candy during Christmas! We would roll it in cinnamon. She used to call them “sweet potato candy”. We didn’t use sweet potato for it, that’s just what she called it! Love you, Paula! I watch you every single day!

Growing up our family went to NC and stayed the summer at my great grandmother ( she was a mountain doctor ) and grandmothers farm house. Every summer my cousin would make potato candy which she rolled out and smeared peanut butter all over it. Then she rolled it up and made pinwheels out of it. I had never heard of anything like it but it sure was good! You sure have brought out so many good memories Paula. Thank you for sharing this special recipe with everyone and especially the ones who have never heard or tasted of this candy. 🥰

I've eaten potato 🥔 candy for about 55 years. I've NEVER eaten it that way! Midwest (southern Indiana & all of Kentucky) roll the potato part out, thin enough to spread good, creamy peanut butter from edge to edge. Then, gently roll entire piece out to form a tight "log." Cut fairly thin, wrap up in wax paper. Oh my. Brings back such warm memories.❤ 😁 ❤

On feast days back when I was in the convent the Sisters made potato candy and did it all different ways but my favorite was when it was rolled out and spread with either peanut butter or preserves and then rolled up jelly roll style and sliced. I've done it that way but instead used Coco Lopez cream of coconut and added coconut and almond extracts to the potato mixture. So sinfully delicious you'll need to go to Confession 😊

My sisters both made potato candy, they put peanut butter in theirs, it is delicious. My middle sister passed away unexpectedly 5 months ago. Her husband lives about 20 mins. from my daughter. He met my husband and I at her house about 4 months ago. I took him Christmas candy, like my sister always made for him. We were talking about the potato candy, we plan to get together and try making it. When my younger sister can come show us how. I just thought it would be something you had to improve on. I only make what I think is easy!!! I am so thankful that I found Miss Paula Deen, you've helped me so much. I enjoy watching you every minute. You're Videos and too soon!!!

When you think about it, adding sugar to wheat flour isn't any less strange. And East Asians have been making sweets by mixing sugar/honey/syrup with beans for centuries. My husband thought that was weird, too, but it's not. We take a starch -- wheat, barley, beans, potato -- and make sweet delights. The starch is just the mild medium to deliver the sweet goodness. I bet you'd enjoy this candy (as I probably would) and the red bean jelly, too.

I made a version of this in cooking class in H.S. but we dipped ours in melted chocolate. I added coconut to mine in one version, bp in another & added caramel instead of dipping in chocolate . That was in 1982 or 1983 lol. I was always the creative one in class & the ONLY one who knew how to cook/bake outside class. Happy Mother's Day Paula & Everyone!💐~Anita
