Cilla was from Liverpool, became friends of the Beatles and other bands. Her mother used to get her hair done by Ringo's mother [or was it vice versa?]. She became a coat/hat check girl in the famous Cavern Club, the bands found out she could sing and would let her do a couple songs with them backing her up. Soon she had the Beatles' manager be her manager. she got a recording contract, George Martin, the Beatles' producer, produced some of her records. She became a big star in England, had come to America and did a few Ed Sullivan shows but it didn't seem to work. She returned home, and over the years became a major star singing, a variety show, a game show, just an all around great personality. I believe that's George Martin directing the orchestra in the background

Dionne recorded it first and was not happy that it was so quickly covered by Cilla. Many songs by US R&B artists were picked up in the English Invasion. The Rolling Stones grabbed Irma Thomas's "Time is On My Side". Bessie Banks first heard "Go Now" on the radio only to realize that it was covered by the The Moody Blues. It was hoped that these would be crossovers from the R&B Charts to Billboard Top 100.

She was discovered while working as a coat check girl at the Cavern Club by Brian Epstein who managed the Beatles. I think her version from the series of, "Anyone Who Had A Heart" from it is available in full on YT, but her version of, "You're My World" in the series was sadly almost chopped in half, I think . . . Hi, you two! It's Andrew Erroch fae Paisley in Scotland here. Can I start by saying this is not "Celia" Black. She is Cilla Black. It's pronounced "Silla" and she is amongst the handful of artists that were known by her first name and she is recognisable from her unique voice. The Beatles did love her, and they were great friends, probably because they were all from Liverpool and were on the same music scene. Cilla was so much more than a singer though, in the UK. She is probably best known for hosting Blind Date for many years and famously resigning live on air, because she had been told the show was being axed, due to being outdated. There is also a viral moment of an incident with her in a restaurant. If you search, I'm sure you'll find it. You might also find that there was a miniseries of her life called Cilla in 2014 with the fabulous Sheridan Smih playing the part. So much more than a singer. Æx 🙏

Some used to belittle performers who don't write their own songs. While I have great admiration for singer/songwriters, I love that those who have outstanding abilities either way can have their talents showcased if they don't have the ability/inclination to do it themselves. We wouldn't have voices like Cilla's, Shirley Bassey's, Dionne Warwick's, Dusty Springfield's etc. otherwise. Nor would we have songs like this one. That's why I'm loving the reactors' first time experiences. Takes me back to mine!

I know what you mean. I do like the songwriters to be credited, though. After all, it was them that came up with the music and the lyrics. Max Martin, Dianne Warren and Guy Chambers are examples of songwriters who have never performed songs really in public but have written so many hits for other artists over the decades.

Wondered when you'd get around to Cilla - 'You're My World' and 'Alfie' are my two faves in addition to this.

Really enjoyed watching your channel over the past few years, and your appreciation and appraisal has become so much more descriptive and informative. So glad you have embraced, but most importantly, enjoyed the diversity of differing musical genres. Bless you. Peace UK.

A magnificent performance. Actually one of my favorite songs ever, I'm listening to music since the late 50s. Either if it's Dionne Warwick, Cilia, Dusty Springfield or Linda Ronstadt I love this song. Great songwriting from David & Bacharach!!!!

She used to sing at the Cavern in Liverpool with the Beatles, she knew them. Thank you for showing this.. 🇬🇧

She could sing, that's for sure, but she was also a complete natural on television and had a huge down to earth personality that British people rightly loved. There was only one Cilla.

YOU have to watch the British Special shown on PBS back in 2015 on Cilla Black. It is amazing program and taught me how much I didn't know about the early period of the Beatles and The Cavern club...and I love the BEATLES. I was 5 yrs old when they appeared on the ED Sullivan Show & I fell in love. I was lucky to have an Aunt who was a teen at the same time. She was 15 yrs old when the Beatles came out & I listened to their music while my aunt would babysit myself & my sister. She knew about cilla Black too...but I do NOT recall hearing this song until I saw the PBS special on Cilla Black. You got to watch it! It will make a great re-action video for you both!!!!

Dionne Warwick sang this first in the 60’s, I like hers better. This is good, Cilla was popular in the U.K. Dionne sang it in the U.S. Could you guys play Dionne Warwicks version on Friday? ♥️♥️

They sleeping on Dionne Warwick an her original version and especially on hits like, Anyone Who Had A Heart and Valley of the Doll. Dionne Warwick is a vocalist not just a singer raised in the church.

She literally started out as the cloak girl for the Beatles. They used to call her up on stage to sing with them in the Cavern. Then they convinced their manager to manage her. And then they wrote songs for her. Paul says in his book that when Cilla died in 2015 he was just as much cut as when he lost John and George.

Thanks so much for showing this video! There is another video on KZbin of the recording at a studio of Cilla Black singing the theme song to the 1966 Oscar winner "Alfie". Burt Bacharach is also in this video playing the piano and conducting the musicians and Cilla. For some reason when this film came to North America Cilla's version of the song was replaced with Cher. Why!!!
