As someone who’s love language is receiving gifts: I will spend hours picking out just the right gift for someone, then I’ll pick the perfect way to wrap it and make it look pretty, then I’ll find the perfect card and I’ll draw something on it for them and put a date on it, so if they choose to keep it, they’ll remember.. Because of this, when I receive a gift, I know that someone put that much effort in to me. Plus, it doesn’t have to be a super special gift, it could be a candy from the vending machine on a hard day. It can be so simple, but I’ll cherish it because it means they thought of me

This is the whole point of this quiz and theory tho: you aren't supposed to act according to *your* love language; you are supposed to act according to the other person's LL. You seem to even assign your LL to acts by others as if your motivation is theirs. Thats not how any of this is supposed to work. Read the book.

Hi there, just wanna offer some perspective on the "receiving gifts" love language as I think it was misinterpreted in a negative way. I took the quiz, and receiving gifts was my secondary love language. I don't consider myself a materialistic person, I think a better way to think about "receiving gifts" is to call it "Tangible Affection", which can be something as simple as my partner picking up a tea for me on his way home. Just small tokens of affection really make me feel loved by my partner. To me, when my partner brings me a "gift" it shows me that he's thinking about me even when I'm not around, and that makes me feel loved. So it's not that people who have "receiving gifts" as a love language are materialistic or would rather have a present than spend time with their partner, to me it's just knowing that when I'm not around them they are still reminded of me and are thinking of me and ways they can make me feel loved. I can understand how people wouldn't want to associate with the options because they sound super negative and materialistic, so I think if the questions were worded better more people would find they associate with the love language receiving gifts.

I completely agree! I also think they didn't quite understand acts of service when talking about the vacuuming example. As a working mom of 2, my hubby running a vacuum around the living room is 100% definitely an act of service! I'm busy and it's taking something off my list of things to do! I think they would benefit from actually reading the book instead of just taking the quiz. The book is short, probably took me about an hour to read. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think gifts has to be one of my top love languages because I love giving gifts. Knowing how much thought I put into my gifts, makes me think about all the thought that someone put into a gift for me. the common misconception with the love language of gift receiving is the person being superficial cause they want gifts. the actuality of it is gift giving to them is a physical representation of someone thinking about them. and by gifts it doesnt have to be huge, expensive things; it can be a cute little keychain you see at a shop that reminded you of the person. my moms love language is gift receiving and i realized that it meant a lot for her to get something that made you think of her rather than me doing a task or chore for her.

I am a huge gift giver. I like to remember small details from conversations and surprise them with a gift that relates. Example: My co-worker joked that we needed a "Happy Pill Jar" full of all sorts of anxiety meds since the office was so stressful. I know she has a sweet tooth so I bought a bunch of candies that looked like pills and put them into a container with a label that said, "RX Happy Pills." It's silly and cheap but it made her smile. I also love giving gifts at Christmas. Trying to find a gift that perfectly fits someone's personality is just the bees knees lol

Gifts can also be practical things like household requirements to make life easier, a smoothie because you know your lover likes em and you pass aplace that sells them. It's really not a negative thing unless its superfercial and expected.
@AmarantineTravels
@AmarantineTravels 3 жыл бұрын
For the "gifts", it's not about the "things". It's the fact that a loved one thought of you and knows you well enough to think of something meaningful to get you. That could be something as simple as getting your favorite snack from a gas station when they go in to pay... without you saying anything and not expecting a snack, to something extravagant like planning a vacation on your birthday. It's not about the gift, it's about the intention and thought behind the "gift" . The gift is their attentiveness to you in reality.

Is it though? I think as a member of the house, it's kind of their responsibility to help with chores as well. Now it's a different story if it's like, he know you hate vacuuming so he got that covered for you, that would be an act of service. But if it's just "my husband doing chores and that's amazing", I would disagree it's an act of service, because it should be "my husband doing chores because he's supposed to".

Totally, and I think maybe there's a misunderstanding of what a "gift" can be. Like it's not always a shiny new purchase, I've definitely expressed affection for people by giving them drawings or a book I had that I think they'd like. It's more about the "I was thinking of you and here's why."
@AsziahBaston
@AsziahBaston 3 жыл бұрын
@@aina3387 actually it is just about getting. Your love language is about how you want to receive love, what makes you feel loved, it's not to interpret how you want to show love to other. Obviously we don't know each other but for example, if your sister (someone you say loves to give) were to pick up and gift something she saw that reminded her me, it would make me uncomfortable(as I do not like getting gifts). Now if she were to just come over like "hey, I saw something today that reminded me of you" that's how I would feel love. I hope that's not confusing because I also kinda suck at explanations

As someone whose love language is Gift Giving the question that is “have partner help me with a project vs give me a meaningful gift” I personally don’t like help because I know I will get frustrated if it’s not done the particular way I want it done. So I typically would prefer a gift saying “wow good job” than taking the help. I hope that cane help you understand that love language more. Also gifts don’t have to expensive or even purchased. Flowers picked in a field are gifts. A gift to a person with this love language means something because it says “when I wasn’t with you I thought about you and got this for you” or “I spent my own time thinking of this gift to give you to make you happy”. And this goes vice versa, so when your friend who has the love language of gifts comes over with a candy bar or small trinket to give you, that’s how they show they love you.

Gift giving isn’t a shallow or vain love language. It’s not like “buy me a Prada bag” constantly. My husbands love language is gift giving and that’s how he shows to me that he’s thinking of me or remembers something I like and randomly brings me a chocolate bar because he knows it’s my favorite. There isn’t a monetary value when it comes to it. It’s something as simple as when Ben brings Cristine tea!

Everyone always thinks the gift giving love language is materialistic and just wanting things but it’s more than that. its my love language and it’s not about WHAT the gift is, but the thought and effort behind the gift. Like my husband told me afterwards that he chose my engagement ring because he thought I’d be able to wear it while I worked in nursing (it was a flatter cut gem so it wouldn’t poke through the medical gloves). Likewise, I gifted him a valentines card with puns drawn in it because he likes clever puns, and I also bought him foot and hand cream because they’re very cracked and sore a lot of time and he really appreciated it.

My mum was like that - always so thoughtful with any gift she gave and really appreciated any small token. I'm acts of service but it's always nice to know someone has been thinking of you in some small way. That being said, I also know some people who have had tantrums if their partner doesn't get them an expensive enough gift for their birthday 😬😬. I feel as though people think more of that extreme when they hear gift giving instead of people like you and my mum which I think is far more common 🙂

Gift giving doesn’t mean lambos and diamond rings. Many people prefer actions over words as words can be quite empty. In example, someone grumbling that they love you while they’re completely distracted and ignoring you to play a video game or talk to other people and this is a regular occurrence. Versus, your significant other bringing you a $.50 plastic car that they found at the gas station before they came home that they thought was cute and you might like. It’s about the gesture, not the monetary value for some. I love giving gifts and they’re usually handmade often miniatures that took me many hours to a couple of days to sculpt. Haven’t finished the podcast but I felt I had to point this out as a lot of the comments in the beginning like “who would pick that“ seemed pretty judging.

Over the years I’ve realized there are two aspects of the love language: 1) the one you like to receive and 2) the one you like to give. I realized that I like to receive acts of service and quality time. But when I want to express my love and give it to someone else, I do it in the form of giving gifts and physical touch. So yeah there might be some sort of “compatibility” when it comes to love languages. But yes super true about putting in the effort in the relationship regardless of love language.

As a German I can relate to this. Most automatic cars over here are like SUVs or the more expensive cars like a BMW 5/7 or an Audi A6. The average cars however are like 99% manual. I learned (manual) driving with a VW Golf and immediately after I passed my test my dad (who has an automatic) made sure I learned how to drive his car as well. In my friend group I‘m pretty much the only who knows how to drive both, most people around me are anxious to drive an automatic. Which is also partially because the stick has letters for English words. Like „D“ for drive, „R“ for reverse etc. so most people don‘t know what the letter is supposed to mean and don‘t know what to do 😄

I quickly took the quiz for teens, and it was a lot more centered on familial and platonic love with friends. I imagine the children's one is very similar. My top love language was quality time. And I agree, the gift giving one did seem... a lot. Like, yes I appreciate a gift, but at the same time the amount that it came up was a lot and constantly answering it would seem almost greedy, imo.

I took the (adult single) love language quiz a while ago, and got quality time as well (40%, just like Ben). I too thought the gift thing was a lot. Also, I really love GIVING gifts, way more than recieving them, but that was just not an option as far as I recall.

@@93maija The reason giving gifts wasn't an option is because this quiz is about how you like to receive love, rather than how you express it.

The fact that you use the word 'bum' makes me think you're British 🤔 (also, totally agree. Menchie is so cute)

No one love language is better than another. Each just needs to be understood and given attention. 🤷‍♀️

My love language is also acts of service and I love when my partner vacuums for me 😂 I work pretty late hours and really value having a clean space, so when my partner cleans for me it makes me so so happy!

I don't agree that acts of service is really superficial like, I also value that very much. So I totally get where Christine is coming from.

In the Netherlands driving manual is the norm. So when I got driving lessons I had to learn how to drive manual because most of the cars in the Netherlands are manual cars. The cars are getting more automatic though so probably in a few years everyone will be driving an automatic car.
