I love the death cover, always have. But honestly I think this cover is as much a tribute as it is a cover, and it's a better version than Death's cover. This song felt like a current version of the song, not a cover. The musicality here is perfection, and it's really not fair to compare a female to male vocalist. Just like Asami went lower with Break the Wall to get a darker feel to a heavy song, she did her personal interpretation of Rob, and to me didn't feel forced. Rob is a unique vocalist, but guess what, so is Asami. Personally I don't particularly like when people try to directly compare a cover to an original which so many do when listening to a cover. I think a comparison should be done of the "essence" of the song, not a direct comparison. Obviously I do not agree with your take on Asami here, as we each have our own opinions. Did you feel the same way about Death's cover where the vocals a further away from Rob? Instrumentally I think this really is far and above better than Death's cover, again, which I love. I enjoyed your reaction BTW.

I have always loved Judas Priest since 1977 and through the years I felt no one would be able to outdo them at all, although there were many cheap imitation bands who emulate Rob Halford's vocals and the music was just horrible, bands like King Diamond, Helloween, and Iced Earth to name a few and the closest one was Geoff Tate of Queensryche who I feel was just as good. The women of Lovebites with Asami at the helm are far more superior and at a higher level, that I actually prefer LOvebites version of Pain Killer over Judas.

Lovebites fans aren't generally as toxic or delusional as some fans of other bands (except for one guy), so nobody's likely to say, "Asami's a better vocalist than Rob Halford". Everybody knows Halford's one of the greatest ever, and the "Wolfpack" knows it better than most, since a huge part of Lovebites fanbase is made up of old school Priest fans. They just did this as a bonus track, they aren't really a cover band. In fact they've only recorded three covers in their entire recording career so far, and all of them have just been bonus tracks on limited editions. When they do a cover, at least so far, it's a straight cover. That said, I think it's a great cover and Asami's vocals are amazing as usual. I know she's not Rob Halford, but I kind of prefer female vocals, so it works for me.

Yeah, I mean, if you prefer Lovebites to Judas Priest then that's of course cool and no one should have a problem with that, but I don't think any Lovebites fan would deny that they aren't even close in terms of impact and acclaim. But comparing a band that has been around for over 50 years to a band formed in 2016 is kinda futile in the first place. I like them both. Also the future certainly belongs to Lovebites if they manage to get a great bassist.

Funny...I just love Asami on this! A gritty, angry sound....and why should she even try to sound like somebody but herself? Actually I wish it differed more musically too, from the original. A cover is useless, if you dont make it your own... Personally I am not even a fan of Halfords "hysterical" voice. Unique yes, but too extreme and high for me. But its taste...

Not an easy song to cover whatsoever from a vocals and music perspective, hence not many legit covers out there. Props for them doing it as a tribute to JP; think it's a great cover! Mentioning Midori / Miyako among Tipton / Downing and Smith / Murry from Maiden is a testament to just how talented these ladies truly are! People may not like their vocals, their style, sound, etc which is fine (every band is not for everyone), but to think they're not talented is just DUMB.

Great reaction. Now I love the original, it's one of my favourite songs, really, but I think this is a great cover and I prefer it over the Death cover, to make a comparison. Especially instrumentally. Also they slightly changed the ending (at least compared to the album version) if I'm not mistaken and I actually really like the additions made by Lovebites. Those squealing guitars sound awesome. Painkiller is a legendary song and Rob Halford has an iconic voice as you've said, but they did a great job, all things considered. Hoping to see Epilogue next. Miyako's piano playing was already hinted at in the clips.

Yes it is great cover of this masterpiece. Asami is the woman Rob is the man I don't understand this comparison. By the way Ladies they are the Metal version 5.0. The rythm section Haruna and Miho I never heard such sync before. Miyako and Midori are beyond competition. Stay safe. Stay Lovebites

Asami was a no win in this song. Her voice isn’t his voice. But she did a tribute , which is a good thing. Another thing that really needs to be remembered is that this is a limited edition, made to order release. Only a few thousand copies are in existence. It’s not for general consumption, it’s Lovebites tribute to one of their influences almost as a gift for their fans. But you know what, you are the ONLY person that has said that a Japanese version would be awesome, I’d never even thought of it. What a brilliant idea. Asami would then be able to truly put her own stamp on it.
@cepho8349

Now I agree that a cover in Japanese would have been interesting, but I also feel like some people would have thought of that as some sacrilegious act, almost. Also I assume that it's not possible to simply translate the song into Japanese, because of differences in syllable lengths. Making it work would require quite a bit of trial and error.

Each human being has a unique tone of voice that cannot be reproduced identically by anyone else. When you are used to listening to the original, it is sure that a cover version does not sound the same. Also the JP album version of "Painkiller" was arranged and mixed in its own way, and in my opinion the vocal track was arranged in such a way to bring out Rob's vocal power. So any cover can't adequately capture the same feeling as the original which is in itself unmatched. On the other hand the vocal work done by Asami is very good. Moreover the difference between a female and a male voice accentuates the difference in listening. I am sure that whoever never listened to the original and who listens to this version would say that it is absolutely great.

TBH, I don't feel Asami's vocal range is quite the match for Halford, always have said it was much closer to Bruce Dickinson. Instrumentally, it's fine (though I prefer Death's version), but Asami is the "weak" link. She's not bad, but you can hear the strain at points, and parts where she just couldn't nail the note. (Having seen JP live, to be fair, Rob rarely could live, either, whereas Ripper WRECKED it live) Still would rate it my second favorite cover of the song, after Death's. As a side note, Rob stayed pretty flat in most of the record version of Painkiller, IMO.

Even a vocal monster like Andre Matos (R.i.p) can't emulate Rob Halford. Demanding that Asami do it is somewhat unfair. Also this is a tribute, not a note-for-note copy....

Halford can't be matched. Many consider him the greatest vocalist in Heavy Metal, so I can't knock you for saying she didn't equal him. Asami did a good job on it and her screams were great. I do agree that there were parts where she could have sounded better. The guitars and drums were spot on though.

► Hmmm... Оnly after this cover I re-listened to the entire discography of Judas Preist. In general, I began to more or less understand and love their music. Prior to this cover, I several times tried to like Judas Priest, but apart from dozens of songs from their impressive musical history, I didn't really like much. ► In this cover, Lovebites for me added more volume, bass, while the original composition always seemed a bit dry.

Yeah I've heard this before. Thing is I think they stayed too close to the original and while she can match Rob note for note I didn't get the same emotional impact. Personally I'd rather hear Nemophila or Unlucky Morpheus cover this just because they would have had to go somewhere different out of necessity. It's not bad it just doesn't hit like the original. Great reaction!

Great reaction as usual. Funny that the background video is ONE (not the only one though) exact reason I can't dig into Lovebites. And since to me it's mostly a love at first sight / listening or not, I never ever dug more on them than what sometimes my Spotify random gets me out of them. They are way too static, way too concentrated on what they do (to do it perfectly I recon) to be enjoyable to me to watch them live. My very first reaction was "Oh beautiful talented and skilled ladies just standing on stage, like some appartement plants as a decorative matter..." (I know I will aggravate many but it litterally was my first thought) It just doesn't captivate me as far as the stage presence goes, and in my books it's a no go. I mean Joe Satriani is captivating with all his mimics even if he doesn't run all over the place, that's a reason I love Iron Maiden for the movements on stage, even an old band that I don't particularly knew many songs from were totally killing it live (Status Quo) as they were really all playful with the crowd... That's a talent needed in the music industry as well and many many bands have it (even in small local bands), and those ladies don't have it in my opinion. And their own music is just too crowded for me, to me it's like modern Jazz but in metal... too much to digest to make it enjoyable, just to showcase high skills and technical talent. (which ofc doesn't translate with that particular song as it's not their's and a reason I can actually enjoy listening to that very song) That's exactly the type of band that should be playing for a "solo" act that is actually able to draw & captivate crowds (like the Kami Band from Baby Metal) Stay safe and keep the good job up 👍🏻
@cepho8349
@cepho8349 2 жыл бұрын
I mean, you like what you like, but I find your comment pretty strange and inconsistent with what you've said before on this channel. If you dislike their stage presence then simply listen to studio recordings. No need to seek out live performances lol. Also it's not true. They might not manically run across the stage, but it really depends on the song in question. There is a lot of footage of them being pretty animated on stage. And Asami in particular knows how to command the audience. Lovebites are a relatively theatrical band though, which works really well with their image. Also I much prefer a band like Lovebites over all those acts that are trying to cover up their lack of musicianship with crazy stage antics. But maybe that's just me. And you complain about Lovebites's music being too technical and crowded, but you like Unlucky Morpheus, a band that is similarly technical (if not even more so) and where even more is happening musically, thanks to the addition of the violin? That I don't quite get either. For me the extremely good musicianship is one of the main draws of Lovebites, besides the great songs, obviously. They are ahead of basically all other female bands in that regard. "Their own music" being a good point. I generally prefer bands that write their own music. Lovebites have written the majority of their own songs right from the start. Nemophila seem very different in that regard, to make a comparison, as they are basically run by external songwriters from what I know. Doesn't necessarily make the music bad, it's just a bit disappointing to me. Though I don't like their music all that much either. It's just a bit bland to me. There is nothing that stands out about it.

@@cepho8349 Let me start with this, THANKS for taking the time to write and express your opinion in more tha 5 words, that matters a lot in this era, so Kudos man 👍🏻💖 There are few things that important for me to connect with the music I listen, and Stage Presence may be one of them, specially when discovering music through YT. And there is very thin line between how complex is the music, but not complex for the sake of beeing complex and show off your skills, but to be musically complex to be interesting because it's what's needed to be interesting. I used Jazz as a comparison (specially Modern Jazz, not like in the 50's) but same could be said about any of the classical music. Some composer resonate with me, some don't. No one is better or worse, it's just a personal opinion and what the music does for you. Music is a very personal feeling somehow. Music is there to be enjoyed by anyone, and ANY music has it's niche. Lovebites does not fit my niche, but still I recognise how talented they are, and how technical they are. If it fits your need, then all is good. Unlucky Morpheous is indeed very technical, but their musicality is more on the classical side of it, and when I listen to them and sing or whistle to their songs, I'm just under this impression of listening a good classical music piece wich was converted into metal. It really fuel my boat. When I listen to LoveBites, I'm more like listening to Modern Jazz, and that's just not what I like. But hey... I come from an era of Hard Rock / Early Metal and Punk... so you know... Punk is not truely recognised as a highly skilled music... and yet punk totally resonates with me. I just can't stop to smile when I see Toy Dolls at the Hellfest 2022. Good ? Nope... worth it ? Nope... Fun 110%... yeah I'm like that. Somewhat on extremes... either way loving too simplistic things or disliking too complex. I just need the right amount I guess. Music is truely for each their own, but still we are free to express our opinions, and if you dislike something, then simply give me a true argument. You may not like my arguments, and yet they are valid arguments. You can tell me you totally think that NEMOPHILA sucks, and if you give me your reasons, I will listen to them and process them, and yet, I'm not here to make you change your mind. I'm fine with it, and what you stated about them I can totally understand. As long as you have other great bands that brings you happiness, it's all what matters I guess. On the Stage presence thinggy... I was a big fan of Gun's & Roses back in the late 80's early 90's... Saw them live ONCE... that live simply killed my love for them... for decades (and still to this day) seeing them that bad and drunk live. That was probably the single day I had to decide if a band was worth my money for their live... When you are a teen and your hard earned pennies are ruined by some egocentrics that are unable to perform live as a band and drunk... that leave a scar for life. Hence some bands not connecting with me for their lives. But rest assured, LoveBites is by far not the only Japanese metal band that don't connect with me, more Japanese metal bands in there are quite famous and followed for what they are and provide, but I totally feel the same way as you about a good amount of them, overreaction, just because of looks and how cute/beautiful they are. Special 100% naked reveal... My Guilty Pleasure hard rock / metal japanese band is Aldious... I know... So Yeah I have some as well, and I can't rationally explain why.

@@cepho8349 I think so too ... . I like many other bands as well, but each one has its own personality and is different. Lovebites has a view of the world that can be expressed only because they are women, but at the same time has a technique that transcends gender. If you want to see an intense performance that will have you running around on stage and sweating, you should see another band. This song is a kind of fan service for the Lovebites, included as a limited-quantity bonus track and not played at their live shows. Since this is a song by a band they admire and are influenced by, the girls play it as faithfully as possible, in a less arranged style. Asami made an effort to keep as close to Rob's vibe as possible, instead of her usual vocal style. It is unfair to say that female vocalists are weak because they cannot produce the same voice as a unique vocalist like Rob. There are cover songs because there are great originals. This cover song shows that the Lovebites are playing with respect to JP. One more thing, I am Japanese like Asami, so I do not have the same English ability as a native speaker. So, I think my expressions and sentences are wrong. I’m sorry.
