The Marijuana reference "toke" was not lost on us in the 70's. It went right over the heads of most people not of our generation. But the happy, upbeat feel of the song made it irresistible to everyone. My mother always liked the song "Angel of the Morning" and then one day she really understood the lyrics and was shocked. This song just put a smile on everyone's face.

In 1970 I saw Brewer and Shipley in a concert in the student union of Central Missouri Sate College. I was a student there. It was just the two of them. They set up their own equipment. The audience was small. After I went up and talked to them about the music business while they broke down their gear. That summer I was living in Kansas City, Missouri and I found they lived in the same neighborhood. It became a hangout for musicians and hippy types. They were great guys. I am glad I got to meet them.

I never understood what this song was about, but it always makes me smile. And Amber, you're so right! Music is a universal language that lets us connect with one another. Sharing music (like mix tapes in the old days) is a gift of love and friendship, because in choosing the songs, you are choosing to share yourself. It's always a pleasure to see the two of you appreciating the music we love, and helping us remember when we first heard it, or those special people and events that are marked by the playing of that song. It's also nice for me to have a new "family" to share my love of music with, now that I'm an empty nester without family near. I particularly get a kick out of seeing folks my same age in the comment section telling stories about events in our shared consciousness. I have you, Jay and Amber, to thank for this enrichment of my life. Bright blessings to you and your lovely family.

Here is my take on it from listening to it since I was knee high to a grasshopper. I don't know what anyone else has said or if this is what the band intended or anything. :::: There is some word play here. One toke over the line could be referencing smoking too much grass. But that is just surface fluff, to me. One toke over the line is a saying that means, you just made it in. You just squeaked by. You made a 70 on the test and 69 is failing. So to extrapolate; he wants to be one toke over the line Sweet Jesus, sitting downtown in a railway station with one toke over the line. He's waiting for the train that goes home, sweet Mary (the mother of Jesus). He means he wants to have made it to heaven, he wants to be ready to go, bags packed, with one toke over the line.

Hello from New Jersey When this song originally came out, a lot of people misinterpreted it as a love song; including Lawrence Welk. The Lawrence Welk show actually had two of their well-known singers sing it as a love song to one another. It's not a love song. It's about someone getting high on Marijuana in a train station. Once people figured it out, then Vice President Spiro T. Agnew blamed this song by name as the reason the American youth were so corrupted. There's another video of Brewer and Shipley here on KZbin explaining that story. If you can find it, it is worth a watch. As always, stay happy healthy and safe. Enjoy your day 🌞 and Keep Smiling 🤣🤣🙏🙏😀😜

Brewer & Shipley have explained that the meaning of this song is they were smoking grass in a train station between gigs and they felt like they had one tote too many , they crossed the "line" from a good buzz to a small case of paranoia. In this condition they felt the need to explain it to Jesus. Amber unfortunately I feel many of your hippie friends have been there, done that, and got the t-shirt as we toked on a "fat" one. PS because of this I was told I had a good time in the 70's. Take care RSR PSS Please do more Dan Fogelberg, I'll let others suggest the tunes because in my opinion there all great.

Mother Maybelle Carter was asked in about 1971 what she thought of current music, and she allowed as how she didn't know much about it, as she didn't exactly hang out with younger musicians, and her act was playing old songs. There was one song she'd heard that she liked a lot, though: "That nice gospel song, 'One Toe Over the Line'." When it was explained to her, she paused a moment -- she was very anti-drug -- then shrugged and said it was a great tune and she liked it anyway.

I couldn't stop smiling watching you react to this song! For another feel good song I suggest "I'd Like to Teach The World to Sing" by The New Seekers. Most people my age (63) will also remember it being used by Coca Cola and they changed one of the lines to "I'd like to by the world a Coke". I'd also like to suggest "Lake Shore Drive" by Aliotta, Haynes & Jeremiah. Lake Shore Drive is the street that runs along Lake Michigan in Chicago where I grew up. Oh, and we refer to Lake Shore Drive as LSD so don't think that means something else when you hear the song. 😁

I always thought of this as this moment of waiting for a person. You're anxious to see them in both a positive and negative way. Whether it be a toke or a drink anxiety drives you to cope. When they arrive though, everything feels right. That's what I get from this song. That's the most beautiful thing about good music. In opposite contexts two people can get exactly what they need from the same song.

I've never really understood these lyrics. When I hear "toke" in a song, my definition of the word doesn't quite fit. But, it's still a song that can turn a crappy day, good! My mom thought this was a religious song back in the day! My friend and I would be in the back seat, our moms were in the front seat and when this song came on the radio our moms would be singing along! 😂

Mike Brewer recounted this song's origins by noting, "One day we were pretty much stoned and all and Tom says, 'Man, I’m one toke over the line tonight.' I liked the way that sounded and so I wrote a song around it." Brewer & Shipley were a great one hit wonder.

Good pick! loved this song. Reminds me when I first started collecting records. Another "feel good" song around that time was "Put Your Hand In a Hand" by Ocean. Another song around that time that mentions sweet Mary was "Sweet Mary" by Wadsworth Mansion. Check it out sometime. Thanks.

“Put Your Hand In The Hand” was written by the late Canadian songwriter Gene MacLellan who also wrote “Snowbird” which was made famous by Anne Murray.

Love me some Brewer & Shipley! Witchi-Tai-To (pronounced toe), Yankee Lady, Song From Platte River, Indian Summer. They were studio artists for A & M records, made 1 album (Down in LA), decided they hated LA & came to Kansas City, Missouri, created a record label & did their own thing. My dad saw them live in a little coffee shop in KC in like 1970 & they blew him away so I grew up listening to them. Their catalog is pretty great. Also, president Nixon & vp Spiro Agnew named them subversive to youth b/c of this song (which they wrote as a joke), so the song Oh Mommy came out of that. And yes, Jerry Garcia did play steel guitar on Oh Mommy. Happy listening!

I was 15 when this came out. I used to go ti a diner , after school with friends. I would play this continuously on the table jukebox. ( You guys are too young to remember them, I am sure!) The waitress couldn't take it day after day, and finally offered me money to stay away! ☺

This song is about being just a little bit too high, but the "toke" reference went over a lot of people's heads. 😎 The Lawrence Welk Show (known for airing wholesome, family friendly musical performances) even did an unintentionally funny cover of it in what they described as a "modern spiritual". 🤣🤣🤣 Here's a clip from the 1971 episode: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmnXlaCXes2Afqcsi=4573BkCbb1BpdyYx
