This ELO reaction just maybe made me realize that in today's day and age, musicians seem to be incapable of making a ballad or playing their instruments that reflect and/or match the lyrics that they are singing. I think that's why bands like ELO and Fleetwood Mac resonate so much with the soul. They do this with so much presition and perfection. : )

Interesting observation. This is exactly why I always like Lindsey Buckingham's guitar work over EVH, as sacrilege as that is... Yeah EVH had more talent and was way more technical, but you FELT Lindsey's guitar. Whatever the song was about, was echoed with is guitar work. EVH was just speed and a lot of notes flying at you, with no real emotion other than pure energy. Sometimes that worked, sometimes it left me feeling cold.

Thomas Shaw - are you Tommy Shaw from Styx? Hahaha joking. I just commented on their Beatles influence and connection. One of my best friends, a famous drummer, used to say they were the poor man's version of the Beatles. That was 30 years ago and it is so true. I've always been a fan of both bands so .... But ELO was on Apple records and there is so much undeniable similarities in writing, vocals, production, everything.

Per Songfacts Written by ELO frontman Jeff Lynne, "Strange Magic" is the sixth track on Electric Light Orchestra's fifth studio album Face the Music. By this time, the band had shifted their orchestral sound to make it brighter and more radio-friendly. The strategy paid off, as this song and "Evil Woman" were both big hits. The song is about a captivating woman, but "Strange Magic" is also a good description for this song's sonics. Compressed to a tight 3:27 for the single release (it runs 4:29 on the album), the song packs in an intriguing array of harmonies and hooks while integrating the famous ELO string section. The lyric is suitably trippy, and very repetitious, with the title appearing five times per chorus.

You are really delving into the music of my young days. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company and now ELO. ELO were very first international band that I saw as a young bloke, going from the bush to Sydney to see them with my mates (and no parents). A wild weekend with a brilliant concert in the middle of it and back to high school on the Monday. A suggestion would be to listen to ELO tracks like Ma Ma Belle (Rock), Cant Get It Out Of My Head (haunting, like this one) or Boy Blue (Orchestral / Rock) when they were a big band. After those tracks they dropped the albums New World Record, Out of the Blue and Discovery and went INTERSTELLAR!

Jeff Lynne was a close friend of George Harrison of the Beatles (who would later join him to form The Traveling Wilburys in the 80s).... Lynne was very influenced by the Beatles use of strings in their songs, especially Eleanor Rigby and I Am The Walrus. After the breakup of the Beatles, Lynne set out to form a band that would continue what the Beatles started, mixing orchestral arrangements with rock. The band started out as The Move, later changing to Electric Light Orchestra ("light" meaning undersized, not light as in light bulb). Once they caught on in the early 70s, they were informally referred to as the "Beatles of the '70s", with many suggesting ELO was what the Beatles would have sounded like in the 70s had they not broken up after the Let It Be album in 1970.
