When you were talking about that person and expressing their gratitude and change in perspective it reminded me of me of myself actually. I've been watching your videos just right about the same time as that person, 13 or 14 years old or so and now I'm in university. I remember I'd get so wrapped up in my own head and how I wouldn't allow myself to present myself the way I wanted to do so in middle and even high school. As I watched your videos even further I would slowly break out of my shell and become less apologetic and take things at an easier perspective. Still with worry of perception but less about concealing a part of my identity that I felt was wrong. & in turn I was able to weed out the people who weren't as honest and truly a friend. Even after all these years of watching & learning from you I've always been able to learn something new, in a way that opens my way of thinking. Thank you David!♡♡

28:40 What country does teach about crimes? The answer is Germany. In my 13 years of school i learned 3 years extensive about warcrimes, how hitler rose to power, mindset of the German population in the 1920 to 1940 and etc. I'm not saying that those warcrimes/crimes against Humanity are on the same level. I think to resolve the problem with japan's warcrimes, japan should aplogize to the asian country like the germans did to the jews.

Look into how Germany deals with their past war crimes. They actually put plaques of the names of Jewish people on the cobble streets where their homes use to be that they were taken from. The plaque has their name, where they were taken, and when they died. Possibly accepting past crimes and putting them at the forefront is a different alternative to moving on? Idk look into it if youre interested, just my humble opinion.

18:44 I truly believe that if you lived and witnessed first hand the atrocities the Japanese Imperial Army did the families then I can understand why it's so hard to forgive. Ppl in China witnessed babies being bayoneted so I can see how they can see Japanese as the enemies. Anyone who can forgive and move are really strong ppl. i was also in a relationship similar to david’s but speaking from a girl’s point of view, to me, he was so dependent on me for his happiness and self worth that the relationship was so one sided that I was scared to break it off and leave him completely. even after we broke up (i finally felt i had the courage to get out and stay out) i had to be his friend and help him through this breakup and it was really hard to do. i finally told him he wasn’t gonna get better if he kept on relying on me and i just can’t talk to him anymore. i just ended up feeling traumatized by this type of guy who used me as a crutch

Death is a very simple and understanding occurance. We live, we die. So I get it when SOME people can live life with that meaning and way of thinking. I dont however think it means they're "messed" in some sort of way. Isn't s bit messed up when something we care of about has to be gone forever, and we deny it, and get angry about it even tho we knew the whole time it was inevitable?

@50:52 I'm like Joe where my ex said "i think we should just be friends for now" bc he wanted to "focus on his studies" and the "for now" stuck to me and made me think we were just taking a break (he said it in Indonesian so context-wise it read more clearly, and he never explicitly said "i wanna break up"). So i casually said okay bc I didn't think much of it until his friend actually told me he wasn't really interested in getting back tgt again, and that he said it that way bc we never know what could happen in the future. But with his mindset then, I wish he had just been straight up instead of giving me false hope when he knew for a fact that he didn't want to continue :/ but this was like 2 years ago so I'm good now

Hi, love this podcast. I just wanted to share some of my opinions on the relationship between Korea and Japan. I'm Korean american, but I lived in Korea for a few years and learned a lot about Korean history. I agree that hate should not be directed towards Japanese people now who had nothing to do with the things that happened in the past that were done by their ancestors. However, I do want to explain where it might come from. Although current Japanese people are not the ones that did it, the pain that was caused back then still continues to exist till this day. Our grandparents are war survivors. The war is not ancient history, it still a fresh scar. What makes it worst is ,as you mentioned, how Japan would not apologize and admit their wrong doings. Many women who were kidnapped and violated as comfort women are protesting still to this day for Japan to admit their inhumane acts and apologize. Comfort women are just a fraction of the dark things that happened during that time. Japan continues to show the same response of indirect denial and refuses to apologize. Japan and Korean relations have been very rough recently as Japan officially removed Korea from the trade whitelist. This only made underlying hurt and negative feelings to surface even more. Although my friends and your Japanese friends say they don't have any negative emotions towards Korean people, the government and many big companies degraded Korea and Korean people. As much as we can't generalize that all Japanese people hate Koreans, we also can't say that Korean Japanese people who live in Japan are free from discrimination and hate. There were plenty of Japanese people who publicly projected their hate towards Koreans in Korean Japanese neighborhoods. Korean and Japanese relations will always be complicated. The Dokdo issue is another giant one of its own. I think the problem of all of this is that there are still Japanese people that think they are better than Koreans, belittling Korea, not admitting to their inhumane acts which we can also see in their consistent use of the rising sun flag. In response to this, there are also extreme Koreans who are projecting hate towards a whole country, basically doing the same thing that Japan is in a way. Many scholars compare Germany and Japan and how they handled the aftermath of WW2 differently. For example, Germany has a Holocaust memorial in the center of their capital. It took a long time for Germany to recover and heal from the dark and inhumane acts during the Holocaust , but they are in a much better place through active efforts and education. I believe that although it is more complicated and difficult, Korean and Japanese relations can improve and slowly reach a point of healing and reconciliation, but the start will have to be an apology from Japan for actual Korean people to heal. It can only happen when the people truly want it and are ready for it.
