Low oil pressure shut off engine - Bad Oil Pressure Sensor - Chevy Impala

A friend's 2006 Chevrolet Impala with a 3900 3.9L V6 had a warning light come on the dash that said "Low oil Pressure - Shut off Engine." Stop driving immediately and turn the engine off, because the engine can be severely damaged if oil pressure is lost! Turns out, the problem was only a bad Oil Pressure Sensor. The Chevrolet dealership was asking more than $200 to replace the sensor. It's pretty easy to replace, so you don't need to spend that kind of money! I show you how to replace it in this video.

I have a 2006 impala 3.5 , the oil pressure sensors on these have a tendancy to get oil in them. The first thing to do is take it out and clean it, then see if the code or warning is gone.

I hope this is the issue for my wife’s 2010 Impala. It came on just as she parked and then it turned off. It’s just sad because there’s been so many things wrong with this car in the last month or so. Transmission went out and the coolant sensor is also acting up. So far got the coolant sensor fixed but now there’s this. I guess it’s all about fixing it until there’s nothing left to fix and then start all over again

my oil pressure light came on this week on a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo.. It was the oil sending unit... Dealer? $350.... My local independent mechanic, 75 bucks including parts... Dealers should be called Stealers.....

Dealerships are definitely much more expensive. I've had to buy some small, hard-to-find parts some years ago at a dealership, because the internet wasn't what it is today (buy anything you need with just a click of a button). Lots of $$$ for plastic parts.

The Oil sensor should last 3/4 life of car. I didn't know this but check 1st if you have over 3,000 mile since last oil change. If so, all you would need to do is change ur oil and your oil pressure sensor will be fine. That happened to me. I had a synthetic oil with 5,000 miles and the oil pressure sensor came on with a obd2 BlueDriver with app. My remote engine start would not work. I change the oil and everything was fine. I did have the oil pressure sensor changed without knowing this. Then 2nd time around..... What , again?! Another sensor?! I did some research on the mater and found ...change your oil it could be just very dirty blocking its performance.

I have a feeling you are correct sir, makes a lot of sense. I will be changing my oil tomorrow as I checked my oil today with the dipstick and is pretty dark. Last time I did an oil change was a little past 3,000 miles ago but it was conventional oil, I am aware that conventional oil has a shorter life span.

I just did the same thing on a 2009 Impala. What a pain in the ass that was to get a socket on it. Once I was able to and got it broke free, it went fairly smooth after that. It would be easier to change it from below if the starter was not in the way.

It was pain butt installation new one lineing it up at hole I used crescent wrench it took little long then use socket butt got it done this off my 08 grand prix

I think some mechanics, especially dealerships, charge according to the VALUE of the repair to the customer, not the actual cost. How bad does the customer need their car repaired. In my experience, they charge about 3x the retail price that I pay retail. Sure, they have overhead, but it's ridiculously expensive. On your job, 1hr labor @ $80/hr + 3x $30 for the part + tax + shop disposal fees = $207. They haven't thought about charging customers for the air they breathe or parking/storage while the car is there. One of the most valuable classes I took in high school over 55 years ago was auto mechanics. That has saved me $1,000s in labor and parts costs on my own cars.

Interesting thoughts. Doing it yourself can definitely save you money in the long run. That's not to say that there may be some trial and error that cost you. In some cases, it's best to have a professional do the work. It's all according to what the individual wants to do.

When replacing the oil pressure sensor, if you do not ensure that you reconnect the wires, can that cause your MAP Sensor to malfunction?

Bryan Gary I don’t believe so. I could definitely be wrong. You’d have a message on your dash if you had low oil pressure. Seems like stalling would be a fuel, spark or compression problem.

I can't say for 100% sure, but it is probably the same principle for the Cruz. Check your oil level. Low oil level could cause the oil pressure warning light to come on. If low, you may have a leak, or your engine is burning oil (you'd know, your exhaust would be very smoky). If oil level is good, you may have an oil pressure sensor issue or a bad oil pump.

I've noticed my light only comes on when engine is unloaded at highway speeds which leads me to believe it's not the sensor but the oil pump, also in the morning when the weather is cold it does not come on, what do you think?

If the oil pump is failing, which is very unlikely, it would not matter what speed the car was going.

quick question.. my check engine light is on and the code sent me to this problem but my car doesn't have to symptoms symptoms( engine hot shutting off) besides the code.. should I just go ahead and replace it or clear the code?

Dre Godsey I've read that the sensors go bad and will send false signals. I suppose you can clear the code, but then the sensor becomes the boy that cries wolf. The sensor is inexpensive and easy to replace. This vehicle hasn't flashed the warning since.

Dre Godsey just happened to me. Visiting my daughter at college and at a gas station off the interstate the oil pressure light came on. Didn't quite know what to do because no symptoms with car. Checked oil and kept going. Next day at mechanic he diagnosed faulty oil sensor. 75 bucks. They do go bad.

I'm not sure exactly, but I'd say it's in the same location probably. Typically find these sensors by the oil filter.

Check oil pickup tube and use genuine oil filter. Also consider the oil you use. You might be using wrong oil which causes low pressure on cold startup.

You may be able to rent an Engine Oil Pressure Test Gauge from your local auto parts store, like AutoZone. The tool may come with instructions on how to use it, or you can search online how to hook it to your engine to check oil pressure.

It may be a faulty sensor, or perhaps you actually have low oil pressure. Could be a worn out or bad oil pump. I've also read somewhere that bearing clearances could widen inside the engine allowing oil pressure to drop.
