Hey everyone! Today we're taking a fresh look at my G&L L-1000 CLF and my Ernie Ball Music Man Cutlass, two awesome basses from two different offshoots of Leo Fender's legacy. Both of these basses can be described as "P Basses on steroids", but both have completely different approaches to the equation. Let's check 'em out!
L-1000 Schematic: www.bassesbyleo.com/paul/g&l_...
This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with MJC Ironworks Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(130) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at www.mjcironworks.com

That is a pretty nice rabbit hole but I think he's going to have to swizzle his inventory if he makes that commitment, judging by how much he loves Rays and how hard he went at that platform in this case. G&L has some *stupid* configurations that cough up unbelievable tones and at their price points I'm still trying to get over my avoidance of square heel joints in stuff I buy going forward just to acquire some of those more evolved or mature tone footprints/signatures.

@@LowEndLobster I blame you for really putting a fine point on the double P bass. It's pretty much the perfect placement and the G&L Leo's workshop video shows why. Then I found the El Toro project, which I didn't really understand until I reviewed the original El Toro and that led to the Matador and only a bit ago did I make the connection that these two were the evolution of J and P bass, to Leo. Ever since I learned that J pickups can be split, my back brain has been churning *hard* - I think that by running the P pickup turned down but with the wiring correct with a split J there may be a mode in there that kills the single coil hum, naturally. Honestly, I'd probably just wire it like that if I could make the tone be indistinguishable otherwise, so it would just run like you expect but noise cancelling modes all the time.

I own the L-1000, and man, what a bass. It kills in studio, on stage, and OMG eliminates my need for any bass boost. Nothing against Fender or MM, but G&L is Leo at his best, and IMO is the more practical of the two.

The only person on the planet not constrained by the need to build a better P or Jazz bass was Leo Fender. He was always looking forward. His MM and G&L efforts were evolutionary steps as big as going from P to J, and I think are both are very underrated, particularly G&L. The L-1000 & 2000 are full spectrum instruments, and you are always discovering new tones, if you can get your head around the controls.

@russellzauner
@russellzauner 3 жыл бұрын
I have been impressed by the amount of thump yet refinement that the Fallout can bring. If you want those mustangy tones you can get them or you can fake up a Ray no problem. Should put the L-2000 against any of the double bucker Rays (but it won't be apples/apples really because the pickup position is different even if you get similar control options). G&L makes direct P Bass variants/descendants - put those against the Cutlass, like the LB-100 and SB1. You could even expand by pitting the G&L jazz bass variants against the plethora of jazz bass demos already in existence. LEL's Bass Thunderdome!

@@LowEndLobster I'm putting together a mental list of travel rigs...(actually it's been something I've been working on for a few years now) :-) Seymour Duncan Powerstage, Darkglass has two separate lines of stomper amps that both rip as well. Couple that with maybe a comparison of a Phil Jones and Darkglass Element (and any other headphone/DI - don't know if the WAZA headset counts, but it should work for bass as it reproduces wirelessly instead of powering the voice coils itself) and I asked Thomas Blug in a livestream if the AMP1 can handle bass spectral frequency and density and he said TLDR "yup" so there's that in the stomper amp market as well.

I love both these basses. The Cutlass sounds as though Leo thought “I never quite got it right, let’s make the P bass I should have made!” - I love the G&L for its tonal variety. The bass and tone cut reminds me of the Rickenbacker 3000, and I don’t understand why it’s not been used more in passive applications.

@@LowEndLobster I am investigating tapewounds rn. Instead of options in my preamps like bully I want options in my strings...it all starts at the fingers, and if someone tries to convince you differently they're either an idiot or trying to snake oil you. Maybe the color won't wear off them, either. One bass came with black strings (COOL) but the color is wearing off the strings feel gritty or grindy no matter how much I clean this thing, so even if they are quality I don't like them because they look and feel bad. Like Laura from Khurangbin says: "The ring probably makes me play 10% less better but it makes me look 25% cooler so it stays." kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnK4mmtppcx9h80

The "OMG" mode is basically one of the coils passing through a capacitor, which is what rolls off the trebles for that coil. @@LowEndLobster i would recommend checking out the kiloton. Either the usa or the indonesian made. You seem to be a fan of mm basses so it would be fitting. I tried a jazz bass of this company once. It looked like a classic fender jazz bass with the warped g&l headstock. I think it cost around 500$. the build quality (me being a stickler and all....) and the tone were unreal for that money. Happy new year man.

Great. I just watch your video about your signal chain and what you’re about. I too am a hobbyist. I’m embarrassed to say I have no experience with active basses. That’s why the L1000 and SB1 appeal to me with the MFD PUs. Did you find the signal a little hot to manage? I have read commits in forums where owners complained about controlling it. What’s your thought?
@LowEndLobster
@LowEndLobster 3 жыл бұрын
@@jamessechman8560 No need to be embarrassed! We all explore the world of bass at our own pass... pace? The MFD is a spicy pickup and OMG mode can definitely be troublesome for some amps. The amp I use in my videos has some built in compression which helps me a lot when exploring the EQs of some basses. I'm able to demonstrate the change in tone with the increase in bass/treble without overloading the amp or interface. I keep the amp EQ and settings the same for all my videos so the only real difference is the bass. OMG mode definitely commands a lighter touch too IMO

The L-1000 is just a stingray with the pickup in the p bass location. It obviously has more switches, but are they necessary? If you want that sound could always add a stingray style humbucker to a p bass. Have an active two band for the bridge pickup with a single parallel series switch and a passive tone control for the p split coil. Get the modern sound and vintage tone in one instrument. Idk just a thought/a project I’ll take on one day.

Its really interesting to see how Leo's evolution of the one pickup bass went. Single in the neck position to the split p. Then a humbucker in the bridge position. And finally a humbucker in the neck position. It seems that the single pup g&l was the refinement of his original '51 design. I do love g&l's, but they have never seemed to garner the same attention fenders and musicmans do. Which is sad.

I'm usually all-in for versatility, and while the G&L sounded great, imho the MM just sounded better than any of the L-1000's settings. This, combined with the neck finish and the looks (I like pickguards), makes it the winner of this round for me.

Huh. Can’t believe I missed this one when it came out. I’ve actually owned both of these and ended up loving the MM and selling the L1000. For me no matter how many tone “options” I have on a single bass I end up finding the one I like and shaping EQ slightly as needed so it ends up being moot. OMG mode was fun, but too much in a live mix - maybe I didn’t give it enough of a chance. I found the G&L sounded great on its own but kind of lifeless on stage. My Cutlass is maybe the best playing bass I’ve ever owned, and on stage with a little drive it cuts perfectly through a mix without overpowering anything

Apart from tone, the Cutlass has a much wider body shape than the G&L. Was there a noticeable difference in the way they sat in your lap? @@LowEndLobster Fun Fact: if you can hear your ballast buzzing, you can harvest energy pretty easily from your lights. I was working on a regenerative light fixture at work before I changed groups and had to build a new lab with none of those parts in it. I changed a couple components on the board; they're literally the test circuits in the data sheet, but the breakout board has footprints already populated for the circuits and what you want to do, so I just changed the values for the operation mode I wanted from the chip. Then I took 4 blank copper clad panels and combined them to make two big panels and then just held them up to a light and it started generating ~100mA of current lol www.digikey.com/catalog/en/partgroup/ltc3588-energy-harvester-breakout-board/51896
