I like it too. It's definitely a fun thing for them to do. I was not a fan of the JD II, but I appreciate how 'outside the box' this is for what it is. Short scale drop tuned flatwound knobless little fun thing. I'd feel differently if this were a production model, but for a limited run of something silly - it's pretty darn sweet

I’m mildly surprised there aren’t any p basses without knobs like that since it’s the quintessential plug and play bass, I also feel like this would be better utilized through a sterling line as a cheap starter bass, I imagine they could easily pop them out for 200$ since the minty ray is about 300$ and it has a preamp I got my nieces walnut version for like 250$ one year on sale

I thought about this myself. Just a straight signal to the AMP, that hasn't been messed with. That would be interesting. Glad to see some one tried it out. What is the point of having a pre-amp on your bass, when it is just a toy compared to the pre-amp already built into your power amp ? Throw in some effect pedals in your signal chain, and you'll have 3 volume knobs, and 4 different tone knobs. Which you don't need.
@crocholiday Жыл бұрын
The fake knobs totally got me lol. I was like wtf... Those strings sound killer on that bass. Any idea which set those are? Maybe B, ADG from their regular 5 string flat sets? Been looking for a set of flats for my Ray that doesn't ruin it's tone.
@MadMagicPaul Жыл бұрын
I use the EB Group strings on a lot of my basses - I would think that it was the BEAD strings from the 5 string set - but on the long scale JD he uses 45-65-85-105 which is not actually available to buy - it's either 45-65-80-100 or 50-70-85-105 (or lighter). I suspect he is using a custom set of 65-85-105-130 Group strings (not the Cobalts) They are great strings though, I have them on 3 basses.
@crocholiday Жыл бұрын
@@MadMagicPaul Thanks! I tried a few types of flats on my Ray. Most kind of neutered it's tone. The set on the JD seem to have warmth without loosing some of the Stingray burp / growl I love. Cobalt flats were great but the cobalt made my fingers raw. I'm guessing an allergic reaction maybe? I have a set of EB flats on order to try already. Funny thing, I dug the sound of the Cobalts enough that I've got a set of those coming as well to see if I can just power through the rawness lol. I'm half curious to hear what a set of LaBella's would sound like. They're fantastic on my P.

The only thing that I don't understand about this bass is why they choose a neodynium pickup. Why not an alnico 5 like in a classical Stingray? It's clearly going for that vintage minimal sound/style, and the neodynium pickups are more modern sounding and used in more modern models. Could it be because the neodynium pickup sounds better without a pre-amp compared to the alnico 5?

Notice the great sound they produce and NO annoying squeaky sounds from wire round strings as you move up and down the fretboard. Every guitar I own, and have owned, have flats. “Flats are where it’s at.” Now, do me a favor and bring back that TMB30 and put flats on it. You might very well be surprised how much better it sounds. Nothing else but flats baby. 😊

Thanks for review, Lobster. I am personally sick to death of EBMM continuing to put out meme basses like this when the main production line is so bare. No Stingray classic (despite them saying it was coming back), no new Special colors in 2 years, no Sabre, no Cutlass, I could go on. There is a huge demand for the vintage alnico Stingray sound as evidenced by the fact that the new 76 reproduction BFR sold out in minutes, and I wish there was some sort of production offering for that.
