Lowering and Raising Rohn 25 Tower w/ CHEAP DIY Homemade Hinge!

In this video, I show Lowering and Raising my Rohn 25 60' antenna tower with a hinge that I made from scratch using just a few simple parts from local hardware store. It was CHEAP and easy to build for my 60' Rohn 25 Antenna Tower.

Very nice! The only problem I see is that you are lowering it in the blind; do you have a spotter on the other side with a radio to tell you about clearances, anything hung up, etc.? Also, you should amend it and show us what the cable did to your sacrificial wood block up at the peak of the roof! 73!

The cable just made some grooves in the block on the roof. Nothing bad. I would have put another camera up there, but I ran out of them. Yes, I have a spotter, and I also put tape on the wench cable so I know when to stop too.

I'm working on my first "tower" install. 30' fence top rail with Televes DatBoss on top. 10 or 12 pounds it is. It will be attached to the eve / roof peak area of my single story home. Figureing out the guy wires has been an issue. I DO NOT want to put any holes in the roof and thought about doing 3 guy wires skipping the 4th. But that kept me up at night. So two guy wires will attach to the corner soffit area at the antenna end of the house. 3rd will be fastened to a tree in back yard (nearest) antenna side of house. And the 4th will be strung over the house and attached to the oppisite roof eve/peak. Also... that tree will help hold the base of the antennea as it is witched up into place (diffrent 30' cable holding the base). That's the plan anyways. Will do some testing (lifting/winching) and also get all my guy wires measured and made before doing it with the weight of the antenna. Slight worry now on the weight of the antenna and flex of the 30' top rail. Wish me luck. Tips/advice accepted.

HI, it should work with just 30'. You could do 3 guys if they are pulled at 3 equal angles from the pole.. with the 2 at the corners at the antenna end, you have no choice but to do 4. I would put your pull point at about 20 - 25' and you shouldn't have any trouble.

@@JLPicard440 Cool. Good news. Glad I didn't go for only the 3 thinking (just pull it taught). Would have been 100% wind "exposed" on that one side. Was going to mount the 3 roof area pressure treated guy wire brackets today. But my ladder was icy. Ain't risking it. Thanks for the reply.

Update. All 4 guy wire "mounts" installed. 30' pole (3x10) weight tested. And preliminary raised. Sans antenna. Beautiful day for it too. Now I'll figure out the winching situation. Create 2 more guy wire ends (loops for at the mast). Wait for a good day. And raise a darn antenna or 3.

Excellent! Always love to hear about another antenna being put into service... 😀. Depending on your setup I use an electric ATV wench I got from harbor freight and connect it to my truck as a stationary point... Works great if your able to use a vehicle for a pulling point.

HI... Thanks for the feedback... Looking at the original footage looks like I used 4 cameras. Canon 80D.. Panasonic G85, an Older JVC (I forgot the model) and a Note 10. I'm going by the file names and memory so might not be 100%! .. 😂

I think it's a 5,000 lb one from Harbor Freight.. it actually works really well..

60 ft of tower or 60ft to the base of the antennas?

The tower is (5) 10' sections and the top section is about 8', so about 58 feet, the mast is 24' but it's down in the tower 8', total height is 74' to the top of the mast, I have a 2 meter omni up there approx 17' long, so probably close to 90 to the tip of that..

That's a lot of mast sticking out of the tower. No issues with wind I hope. I assume you have 3 guys at the top of the tower. Glad it works! I worry a lot when I bring mine down. LOL

HI, yes that's a strong mast that is pretty flexible.. Aircraft aluminum.. never had any problems. There are 2 sets of guys on that tower. I've since moved from that location, but I never did have any problems and it stood up to some pretty nasty T-Storms...!

Thanks, same problem with my roof being in the way. I like the way my antenna mast is installed, but how the previous owner got it up is ??? I suspect they put in the mast before they built the porch that is in the way. Sigh.

Outstanding video. I am putting up a small rohn 25g tower and my climbing tower days are gone, this is what I was after. Mine will be 30 feet. Really curious about the hinge of it, I see the rod that hinges over, the third leg is just bolted? also the length of what did you put up each leg to strengthen? I guess black iron pipe or sked 80 pipe. Really like you video. I will watch more. Sam, wm4t

Yes black iron pipe. I don't remember what I put in those legs, It's been about 5 years ago. If you're only dealing with 30', I'm not advising you to do this, but my guess is it'll be fine with just the tower legs. The 3rd leg is just bolted because it still has weight on it, by the time I tighten all the guy wires. Thanks for the great comment.. :-)
