I was manifestd in Memphis TNN,: grew up in Robinson ville Miss. Curtis Mayfield and the impression were my country preacher. They gave me courage and strength to get out of Mississippi. I chopped and picked cotton, plowed mules cut wood and all the other things we had to do when raised on a plantation. That's was my father's way of life but not mine. But in the spirit world i chose the family that I wanted to be a part off. I left and never looked back. I've been many places. Around the so called world three times, Vietnam and many other places. Now I am at peace with myself. Now I know my place in this physical world. It is an illusion. The unseen world is the real world.

THIS was once what we heard on the radio! "We're a Winner"! Talk about positive affirmations. No wonder we seemed to be more focused on gettin' what's ours!! So they HAD to bring in drugs and destroy the positive message of the original "rap" to that of gangsta rap. Consequently, we've never been the same. I'm sooo thankful that I grew up hearing the likes of Curtis Mayfield. Say his name. Thank you for sharing this remarkable hit from our age of sanity!

Positive affirmations like you say, and inspiring role models with a message in this era. I don't see the championing of positivity, hope and pride so much today (I'm sure there are many, but it seems drowned out by the noise). Curtis' approach like Marvin's pushed boundaries even though they had to be more poetic and cryptic in their message for radio play and public consumption which in itself is a true mark of artistry, ducking and weaving between politics and the message.. oh and Donny Hathaway also comes to mind. Keep the good music alive, I wasn't around during that time but I can appreciate it and it resonates. As a DJ, that's what I'm trying to do - be that pusherman for good music and the message!

I was today years old when I learned that Curtis Mayfield was the lead of The Impressions. My Dad took me to an Impressions concert in San Francisco. I was the only child there. The music was so good, I had to start dancing. When I looked up from deep in the groove of the Impressions sound, there was a big crowd of people clapping and dancing with me. My Dad was laughing and encouraging me from the sidelines as usual.

At one of my performances, young Dude asked me, "Why don't You sample - you know, like Today's Artists"? Without missing a beat I replied, " 'cause I can play." We laughed and acknowledged that many younger Artists can play even assorted musical instruments. The point We Each noticed is that many Producers seek other forms of music - that's cool too. He said He's into Ol' School simply because that's where his Hip Hop and Rap juices came from. I think We'll be collaborating soon. Hell yeah, Brother.

Wonderful music by plane ole good people. If these guys were not singing about love, they were singing and bringing some positive and motivational message. We traveled three months on a show with these guys, they not only sing like angels, they were good people. we hear so much bad news about CHi-town today it is hard to imagine these guys were actual Chicago pioneers. I played guitar with Archie Bell and the Drells...we had the 5-stairsteps, Mittie Collier, Delfonics, Unifics, many others...that was a wonderful time in my life....loved them all! Clennis High
