While it might seem like lost media from Japanese animation doesn't get talked about as much as American cartoons, there are still a lot of really interesting and unsolved mysteries from many popular franchises.

Hannah Montana makes perfect sense for an anime. Idol Girl who transforms, plus American stuff is exotic. Last shot in the closing credits must have been a wig and mic under a spotlight.

On one hand, we can only ever appreciate leakers for telling us things we would have never know about without them. On the other hand I really don't feel good about people risking their jobs and livelihoods to give us information that we would have gotten in a month anyway. For cancelled stuff like this? Sure, but actively used DBZ sheets don't seem AS important to get out like two months ahead of time, especially if it risks your job. Probably something I'm missing about this system, but that's my 2 cents.

Most probably the guy who leaked the Hannah Montana anime got banned and blacklisted from ever working in any animation studios in the Philippines. The industry there is small and niche, people know other people from other studios. He's most likely working as a customer support representative for an outsourced company from other countries. He/she probably didn't care about his/her life that he's willing to share the info about the anime even with an NDA risking his whole career over it just for the validation and thrills basically committing career suicid3. Gotta admit tho the thing he did was ballsy but a really stupid move in my opinion. It'll be nice if they came back and share what they've been doing nowadays.

I wonder if there was also a Tie-In Manga also planned for the Hannah Montanah anime? It'd only make sense. Id've been down to read it! Also, fun fact: "Castle in the Sky" is infamous among the Spanish speaking community because the name of the eponymous castle (Laputa) is a well known Spanish slang word that means "whore" and as such it became hard to take the Spanish dubs seriously. Hell, you can even hear the VAs struggling not to laugh at various points! Why the translators never bothered to rename the castle during localization is beyond me.

A piece of Yu-gi-oh lost media that I like because it's just so bizzare is the uncut japanese footage of the capsule monsters-arc. The capsule monsters-arc is a noncanon bonus-arc of the english dub of the Duel Monsters-anime(Just called Yu-gi-oh in the west) that was commissioned and written by 4Kids. Here's the funny part: We know jack all about this, except that it exists because it is listed on Studio Gallop's site and the chance of 4kids using all of the footage that was made is basically 0, they are very cuthappy in their editing. We have no idea if a dub or even a script to go along with the footage even exists, as the only public info on it is that the release was cancelled.(And it indeed was, lol) I know LSuperSonicQ says that non-english localizations aren't that interessting, but I feel like this is the biggest an exception can possible get. Not only are the english and japanese versions of the franchise very diffrent, but we actually have precedent for this type of stuff being potentially relevant, with how the Movie had the same type of case. It's possible that if enough material on this exists, that there is legitimate content that the world simply never saw. And if there is actually nothing, I'd want this mystery to at least be solved already.

The issue with Phantom blood was actually copyright. Back in the day viz media wasn’t around yet and also the company had no idea how to market it outside Japan. No company wanted to take it at all. So the animation company got stuck and held on to the film. Japan tends to lose a lot of older films for some reason but it’s out there somewhere.

I find the Castle in the Sky thing so weird because besides for the third pic... I recognize all of those scenes. They're all scenes from the movie: 1. is the ending, when the credits begin to play, and Pazu and Sheeta are waving goodbye to the pirates, taking off in their own air balloon. 2. is when Sheeta is tellling Pazu how she was taken away by Mooska and his men, and it's a flashback to that happening on her farm. 3. I have no idea what the third pic is, tbh. Definitely looks like one of the ships though, so it could be that or from the opening sequence. 4. is the climatic scene (sorry for the spoilers, but hey it's over 40 years old) , where Pazu hugs Sheeta and tells her to tell him the destruction spell that they then say together which defeats Mooska and in turn destroys a bit of Laputa (although it's presented it's for the floating castle's own good.) It's actually one of my favorite scenes in the whole film.

I'm like 90% sure the third frame is from one of the special segments on one of the Blu Rays, which had a steelbook in 2019 or 2020 (around the time of that tweet). I don't know if this is useful or not, but I remember while in an old IRC anime group, a certain one that ripped Hulu Japan encodes of early Pokemon episodes without paka-paka scene edits, there was some speculation that the Christmas episode "Rujura no Christmas" may have potentially had a version like that; for proper context, this episode was originally set to air after "Dennou Senshi Porygon" and the hiatus the Porygon episode caused effectively canceled it. As such the episode's first proper release was on the Pikachu no Natsuyasumi VHS, where there are some scenes that seem to suggest post-Porygon paka-paka editing (Of course, one of them is a Pikachu thunder attack, but a scene of Charmander using fire is also unusually choppy in framerate). I doubt you'd have any potential leads on if such a thing actually existed, and it's probably not notable to find, but I figured maybe it'd be something to discuss and think about. While technically more "game" than "anime", I think the early prerelease builds of Battle Heat for PC-FX might also be good for this video, as it has many animations not seen in the final game, suggesting a way more ambitious project at first. Also, there's still many Terebikko video tapes that are not documented or ripped, if anyone'd want to potentially dive into silly anime VHS games. I could go for a better rip of Atsumare! Goku World...

The anime adaptation of Moomins 1969-1970 has lost episodes due to the creative differences between the studio(s) and the creator so there's a lot of lost eps as Tove Jansson forced them to change producers cuz the first ones made her moomins no longer "her moomins" as the first iteration had added guns, alcohol and fights as well as ruder dialogue.

Here's another piece of Evangelion-related lost media that was also mentioned in the audio commentary. In the ADV Platinum commentary for Episode 2, Matt Greenfield (English dub director and voice of Makoto Hyuga) mentioned that Spike Spencer (voice of Shinji Ikari) and Amanda Winn-Lee (voice of Rei Ayanami) were in an independent film together. Spencer then mentions that nobody ever saw it, he was not even sure released publicly, and that the film was called Imposters. I posted around for it and it barely got any attention. I even posted on Twitter while @'ing both Winn-Lee and Spencer but Spencer only liked my tweet, and no other info came out. Here's all the info about the film we know: - The film was called Impsoters. - The film had appearances from Evangelion voice actors Spike Spencer and Amanda Winn-Lee. - The film may have never been released. That's it. No info about the plot, the crew, the director, when it was filmed, where it was shot.

Hey man. I recently found a rare and obscure English dub of the Hokuto No Ken anime called "Ken The Great Bear Fist". It was a test dub produced by Toei in the 1980's for promotional purposes in order to sell the rights of the series to potential foreign licensees. There's no footage of the dub, and the only media that exists is the title card and the English script for Episode 12.

It's not anime related, but I very vividly remember once hearing an extended version of the Ben 10 theme song. There was only 1-2 extra lines from what I remember, but it's still extended, and I cannot for the life of me find it. I've looked everywhere online I could imagine, but nothing yet. I only had 1-2 DVDs as a kid, but I doubt it was on there, so it was either on TV (probably for an event), or on an earlier version of KZbin and has since been removed. I'd LOVE to hear that extended version again if it truly exists, but so far no luck in tracking it down.
@l-eaglestone

The closest to what you're mentioning is the version of the theme from the live-action movie, Ben 10: Race Against Time. Thing is, it's a more of a rock cover version of the original, but it does have a line or two more, even if it's just counting from 1 to 10. I have doubts regarding the original TV series' intro version having an extended version even by a line, because the highest available quality of the audio ends cleanly. Still, it might be what you're looking for (assuming you haven't checked that one)?

I'm shocked I hadn't heard of Advent Heroes. Though, its worth noting YGO has a lot more lost media, as long as you're willing to consider scrapped movies and plotlines and episode summaries as lost media (which I do.) Stuff like Ygo Vs GX, a crossover between the original series and GX, or a series of Zexal episodes where the episode summaries originally given do NOT line up with the final episodes at all (with a general summarization being "a different version of the finale would've happened 20+ episodes earlier, but when its over the main character wakes up in a world where their best friend never existed, and fights a mysterious newcomer named Proto.)

I mean, Lost media is media that was lost. Media that was never produced isn't lost, except maybe in a cultural sort of sense. Because the Yugioh anime like other anime only had a few episodes finished ahead of scedule at a time, it's unlikely that anything of these Zexal-episodes was even started, besides the general plotoutline.

I can faintly recognise kanji for names but I just need a higher quality version to be able to be sure on the Kanjis. They are not subtitles and I'm 100% on that. You do not get subtitles for Japanese shows in Japan especially back in the early days. The stills were production cells that were unused and it is notorious for animations to have unused stills. Hell even some early hentai ones exist. This is not a pilot or a alternate ending.

Speaking of lost anime media, there’s a block or promo that I have been looking for but haven’t been able to find yet. Is there anyone here that could help? I remember watching Cartoon Network one night in 2001 when they transitioned into what looked like a new block. I didn’t recognize it. The bumpers consisted of colorful circles moving across a white screen. It almost looked like a Twister mat. The reason why I remember this is because the show that I watched with those bumpers that night was Yu-Gi-Oh! It went on to become my favorite show as a kid but after that first episode I watched, I never saw those particular bumpers again. It was “not” Cartoon Network’s Prime Time block. Prime Time did have “similar” bumpers but I was a big fan of Prime Time as a kid too. I’m sure it wasn’t that. What I have to go on so far: I’m sure that the year was 2001 because my family had just moved. We were still unpacking boxes. There used to be a website that collected classic TV schedules. Looking through it, I saw that there was something on Cartoon Network’s schedule in 2001 called The WB Showcase or WB Presents or something along those lines. I went back to confirm the name but I guess that the website was taken down. Regardless, the name made it sound like it was a block of shows from The WB that they aired on Cartoon Network. For those that don’t know, The WB would be rebranded to The CW a few years later. It’s a long story. That would make sense to me. The WB did premier new episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh! for years. However, I have not been able to find any clips from “The WB presents” block either… Could anyone help me find… A.) What the bumpers I saw that night were for and… B.) Where I could watch them today? Thanks!

Discotek Media is finally releasing HD remasters of Project A-Ko (one of the most important anime films of all time, which had its original negatives lost until recently, and most releases had to be taken from LaserDisc captures) and Violence Jack (which would also be completely uncensored for the first time, since the uncut Japanese version still blurred out/pixelated the nudity, and the Hong Kong version had some cuts even if it has fully uncensored nudity). The Hong Kong version of Violence Jack was also in very poor quality compared to the LaserDisc and DVD releases as it was a VCD release. I just hope Discotek (or maybe GKIDS) would release the uncut Japanese version of Sonic X complete with 5.1 audio and maybe even an all-new dub from the current Sonic cast.

You can find some Animax ads for the original FMA here on KZbin. But again, it was from the 2003 series and not Brotherhood. It makes me wonder if there’s also an Animax dub for the 2003 series as well or not.

Just started the video but wanted to say; I have no idea why the concept of a Hannah Montana anime seems so strange. That's literally most of what Magical Idol shows are about. Creamy Mami, Fancy Lala, Full Moon wo Sagashite to only name a few all have the literal plot of "I am secretly a world famous idol but nobody knows". So I don't know why a Hannah montana version seems so weird unless you like... have no knowledge of shoujo anime 😂

Too bad you didn't talk about "Saban Sailor Moon" pilot (the all-lenght version by Toonmakers)... It's legendary in its kind (as the second attempt of US live-Sailor Moon, the even more obscure "Team Angel"). Some original cells exists and can be purchased on the internet, the trailer was saved from a projection in a convention, we have some scripts extracts, but the real HD quality version trailer and the pilot are still missing (maybe for the better for our intelligence ?).

Somewhere around 2013-2015 here in Finland Sub TV showed the whole American dub of Dragonball Z in the course of the summer. I watched every single episode and waited for the final episode like nothing else. When the episode started my jaw dropped. It was the German dub for some reason. I was so disappointed I just turned off the TV. It would be fascinating to know the reason behind that decision. Was it because they didn't have the US. dub? Did someone just screw up and if they did why in the world did they have German dub laying around the studio? Here in Finland I have never ever heard another German dubbed TV program and seriously doubt that anyone else has since the official languages are finnish and swedish and 95% understand english.

There’s an episode of yugioh GX about a possessed doll who ends up duelling jaden and it’s my favourite episode I’m the Japanese version every episode would tease the following ep and in the teaser for the doll episode (from the episode before) a card is shown and we see the artwork and I think the name but from what I remember we don’t see what the card actually does (it’s an effect monster) I don’t know if it’s considered lost media but it’s weird it appears in the preview but has no relevance in the following episode and never appeared again

It's unknown if there is lost media associated to this, considering the anime was one of the weekly shows, as in the minimum rate of production was one episode per week. But this type of thing happened a lot. And I mean A LOOOOT. Zexal and 5Ds have entire arcs scrapped due to later rewrites and a decent amount of stuff is still referenced in the released material, just like that one teaser.

Some of the 4kids-dubs are actually pretty decent to good. It's just as possible for FZero to have been one of the good ones as it is for it to have been one of the bad ones. Though I guess people could make rough estimations on the material that did release?

well i did own something you could called lost media, my ex gf stole it, over 10years ago and iam pretty sure she threw out, but i did own a VHS with complication of Fist of The North star for both seasons, i have been trying to track it down since and when i look after it, could not really find any clues about it, not on mal, anidb or any other sites, yes it was subbed and i havent seen rips of it either on different sites, so iam pretty sad about losing it, i bought the vhs when i was 14 for 20$ used, circa 00-01 on a local shop and heck they were even sure what they had, same shop i bought angel cop and 3x3 eyes also on vhs and i have a problem with my dvd boxset of fist of the norst star, first of all, i cant find it online, 2nd it dont seem like a bootleg, the sheir size of it and weight also, says something, 2nd the disc are not burned either and made out thick stock also, its not cheaply made, then again i bought it used
