Watching you drive her around reminds me of when I got to drive our 67 New Yorker. We lived at Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico when I was in the 7th grade, dad would let me drive it off base on the country roads and in the mountains on trips. I remember how smooth and quiet it was. Ours had the Mopar "Auto Pilot" cruise control knob left of the steering Column, you just turned the knob pointer to the speed you wanted and switched it on. Ahh good times.

I'll say it again. What a beautiful car. 50s, 60s cars were the best and were actually designed by artistic automotive designers not wind tunnels and super computers that make every car the same shape. It would be great to have a nitrogen bottle so you can check under pressure before putting in the R-12! Those original hoses with metal lines can be renewed. I use a Dremel to cut off the metal crimp to remove the hoses from the barbed end. Get new hoses and put back on metal pipe with high quality clamps. Faster and less expensive than taking them to be rebuilt or trying to find OE hose with metal pipe.

Sunday I replaced the alternator on our 2005 Chrysler Town and Country, and as I was fighting with how tight it was to get to , so I definitely appreciate how accessible everything is on old cars , compared to the newer junk that's on the roads today . Lol but that old Chrysler is so cool , and whenever I can finish getting everything to get my 1972 Nova back on the road as well as my 1970 Karmann Ghia, I'd drive them all the time

You know this, you can "wet" sand that clear coat. It will clean up those fish eyes dry lines all that. It's fidely but if you go slow it's amazing!!! Exhaust manifolds check squareness to the head. Plain as needed. That will the only way to completely eliminate the problem. Or just do what every old Chrysler v8 owner does... Live with it.

I went 134 on the 68 Bonneville. Only modification was the ports after we had the system leak check. The R134 works great. Just make sure you put about 85 percent of R12 capacity due to molecular size. Oh by the way, that old Bonneville with stock A/C system, sans R134, lives in Texas were we have 20-40 over 100 degree days.

That hiccup at full throttle could be a bad or dried up accelerator pump seal. Little trick I learned on my old Camaro to get me by until I could rebuild is to drip a little oil on the pump shaft, it would help seal and fix the hiccup.
@lsxmatt3 ай бұрын
The accelerator pump is leaking a tiny bit so thats probably the culprit.

These old cars had no low freon shut off. As long as the magnetic clutch has power and is working correctly the compressor will engage no mater if it's full, low or EMPTY on freon. The detail came out GORGEOUS!!! You did Grandpa proud brother!!!!!! Those "birds" on the Trophy look like the Imperial Emblems. Kind of funny being a Mopar, was that intentional?
@jakereal36043 ай бұрын
Forgot to say prior to the days of “smart phones” we had smart people!!!!! If our AC felt warm we knew it was low on Freon and once we knew that many would either A) not use it until fixed or B) pop the hood and disconnect the compressor so that you could still use the climate system to get air blowing and circulating but you didn’t burn out the AC compressor. Now days things are made idiot proof. You no longer need to think! Lololol sad but true!

29º is really too cold, and can lead to evaporator icing on a humid day which restricts air flow out the vents. It may need a new thermal expansion valve, that is supposed to prevent the system from running too cold. 36º is a safe temp.

'66 Chryslers were athletic, perky looking cars, the '65s looked a little pudgy in comparison. A family friend bought a new '66 300 4dr, it was the first car with A/C we ever rode in. I like the ride that torsion bar Chryslers get when the t-bars are adjusted to the high side in the front, they can get bouncy when lowered.

Why not convert it to 134 a ? You dump the old mineral oil out and flush everything out and put the pag oil in and change all the o rings to the green ones.i would put a 134 compatible condenser in and charge it up. It's a little more work but the refrigerant is so much safer. I just did a 93 GMC Suburban with dual air and heat and I ended up replacing everything even the lines to the back that were ate up from road salt. I used this new 134 replacement refrigerant that is called Envrosafe . It's basically propane and can be a flammable situation but it cools so much better than 134 That is a good price for R 12 I hope you never have to get anymore cause it's hard to get and people want a lot of money for it

@richjordan93753 ай бұрын
Awesome and inspiring that you got your factory A/C working. Total agreement on R12. You can make R134 work 'ok' but you really need more condenser efficiency for the same capacity system. There may be parallel flow replacement condensers available if you ever have to downgrade to R134; some repros are made for other classic Mopars. They can help make up the efficiency difference but still won't get you to R12 levels. I've never had a Chrysler older than '69; can you blend warm air heated by the heater core with the refrigerated air to moderate temps on that car? The '69 could. I'm keeping R12 for my '71 Dodge; been saving it for decades. I need to fix dried up hoses and probably replace the compressor (sitting open to the air for 43 years or more) but I like frigid air. Beautiful car, nice job on the paint, and congratulations.
@lsxmatt3 ай бұрын
Oh yea there’s a warm slider above the hvac. controls. That would make sense sliding it to warm the a/c up a little.
@richjordan93753 ай бұрын
@@lsxmatt Cool. Also meant to mention when/if you pull your exhaust manifolds, use a straight edge across them to be sure they have not warped. They frequently do. If so then running sans gasket is unlikely to be leak free. I've never used them but people I trust use remflex brand gaskets (which are fairly thick) when they have a problem engine that regular exhaust gaskets keep failing on.
