His 2003 season might have been his most underrated one that he ever had in his career. Over 1600 rushing yards 100 catches for over 700 receiving yards and he put up those kinda numbers for a team that went 4-12 that year and ended up with the number 1 pick.

2003 as a whole was the year of the running back in the nfl for sure
@agonzalez8924

I posted a similar comment on how the chargers were trash in tomlinson's first couple of seasons and how they over used him. That 2003 season is a testament to what I was talking about. Those stats might be the single greatest performance for a running back as whole for a single season, and this was years before he broke the single season td record.

This video was also a sneaky highlight video for Lorenzo Neal (#47). Probably the last great full-time FB in the NFL. He was trucking people for LT, and kept right on moving. Teams just don't use a real FB very much anymore, and that's helped slowly kill the RB position. That big first hit is on the RB, not the FB leading the way. I got to watch most of LT's home games in college as well (TCU). He came in right after I graduated. No one could catch him if he got past the line. I saw his 400 yard/6TD game against UTEP. They had nothing to stop him. The crazy thing is, his Freshman season the team went 1-10, and they had him playing Fullback. Coach gets fired, new coach puts him at RB, and the rest is history.

You made a great point about the death of the FB position affecting RBS. It makes so much sense. I’ve been wondering for years why it felt like workhorse backs have even shorter shelf life than they used to. RBs used to pound the rock out of I with a FB paving the way. Now, they often run from spread and have to make a man miss or absorb a blow.

The culture stinks, i think it's why good players sign there then just fall off the map. I've been following them close since 03-04 and the last seasons that really felt like contention were 09-10 because a lot of those guys were on the team since 05-06. Since then, it's just cool for them to be in the league and live in Cali I guess

The 2001 Chargers probably had the best back-to-back draft picks of all time. Ladanian Tomlinson, then Drew Brees. LT really provided some tremendous hype around the team, growing up in San Diego around this time, it was understood, he was THE man in this city. Safe to say his character matched up with his play as well. (Heck, he won Walter Payton Man of the Year the same year he broke all the touchdown records and led the Chargers to 14-2.) Of course, being a Charger, he has no Superbowls to show for it, but he really doesn't need it. He's just amazing.

A lot of people forget that his first few years with San Diego, the chargers were absolute trash. Tomlinson was single handedly carrying their offense and the chargers were really abusing him with a heavy work load. The chargers didn't really put together a playoff contending team until about tomlinson's 5th-6th season, when he arguably had his best seasons behind a good o-line and competent offense., but unfortunately it never translated to playoff success. If I recall correctly, part of what helped them turn things around was the hiring of coach Marty schottenheimer, and then they had the audacity to fire him after a 14-2 season because they lost in the first round of the playoffs. Those 06'-09' chargers teams were probably the best their franchise ever had a winning a championship, but their garbage ownership found a way to screw it up. Tomlinson had a great career, too bad it was wasted with the chargers.
