Lucifer doesnt encourage people to do the bad or "evil" thing. He encourages people to act on their desires. Sometimes we have f'd up desires. He makes it a point in the show to say this often. He gets blamed for everything we think and do.

What I appreciate the most about this depiction of Lucifer is that he isn't Evil Personified like some people/media portray him as, he just urges people to act on their most secret desires. Yeah, sometimes that's a desire to do bad things, but sometimes it's just a desire to do something that would make them happiest. Maybe it's just because I was raised SUPER Catholic, where we have to control our urges and desires, and not give in to certain wants but instead listen to 'god' and be super strict about some things, but I just really like that this show portrays the opposite of god as being "be nice to yourself, do something good for yourself just because it feels good" rather than being Evil Personified. Anyway, rant over, I think what I genuinely love most about this show is that they really just take their time to build these characters, give them backstories, give them personalities that aren't just "actor turned cop", "Ex-Husband Detective", "She's A Therapist", "He's The Devil" etc. That and it's just so much damn FUN to watch.

Re: Chloe's coat. The first 2 seasons were shot in Vancouver BC. It was so cold that more realistic LA clothing wasn't possible a lot of the time, lest the actors freeze. You can find videos on-line of some season 2 scenes where they had to VFX out the frost on the actors breath. There are also BTS videos of the cast freezing their asses off.

Now I see HOW Lucifer gets his bad name. He did NOT make the girl JUMP. That was her choice. But by the end of the video, you said that he made her JUMP. Even if you didn't mean it that way, how many people saw/heard you say that Lucifer made the girl jump. He gets the bad image that he never wanted. And now, Chloe has seen actual evidence of his extreme strength, and it only makes her more determined to find out what the Hell is going on. Ah, bad choice of words there. He didn't force her to jump - but he did "persuade" her to act on that impulse; without that persuasion, she might not have. No force involved, but some very seductive nudging. He definitely influenced her decision, but the decision was hers to make. Lucifer is literally the devil on her left shoulder whispering temptation in her ear.

The opening scene of this episode is interesting to analyze because they would do this bait and switch in the early seasons of the show of starting a scene depicting Lucifer in a way that would look like the collective idea we have of the devil and debunking it immediately to drive home to the audience that it's not the devil from the bible (he's actually 3 layers of adaptation removed from it, although a lot of the image we have of him comes from the second layer)

For decades most everything is shot in Canada; from Stargate SGI to Smallville. Nothing has gotten cheaper to bring 'home,' unless it's new 'star-up' studios in places like the semi rural south, but then Hollyweird sees that area as redneck conservatives unworthy of their elitist presence and dollars. Their loss, and the DJT as POTUS is bound to prove. Strange how those celebs never make good on their vow to leave...

Thanks for another fun reaction. Yes, the Lucifer character is nuanced... well, more than that as he is extremely complex as you will find out as the series progresses and more of his back story is revealed. Bit by bit we come to find out more about the characters and their effect on Lucifer and his upon them. It is a great story line. I am looking forward to following it all again through your eyes and with your insightful comments and reactions that so far have me really smile!

My 2 favorite portrayals of "the Devil" are this one, Tom Ellis in Lucifer, and Al Pacino in The Devil's Advocate. Two very different takes, two very compelling performances. One of the things the characters have in common is summed up by one of Al's lines in the movie: "I'm a humanist." This show is based on the DC Comics version of Lucifer, who is one of the most powerful beings in existence there. The basic premise for the show came from Neil Gaiman's The Sandman graphic novel/comic series, published by DC.

I never really had that association with devil=evil in this show. I think they did a great job disassociating him with the typical evil stereotype. I think they did a really good job of making him just a guy with daddy issues. Massive, staggeringly large, gargantuan daddy issues, but never evil. Granted, I'm not religious, so I don't have that super ingrained dogma in my head. There are things later that I think better disassociate him from evil, so without getting spoilery, all I'll say is that his purview is "desire." They've already hit on this, but this will get more reinforced as you go on. Hence his association with evil. desire leads to temptation leads to bad things. But desire isn't always bad.

The concept of Lucifer not necessarily being "evil", but encouraging whatever it is that you desire.... That's called Hedonism. And it's generally refereed to as the epitome of what "evil" actually is. Hedonism: The pursuit of pleasure; Sensual self indulgence. The theory that satisfaction of one's own desires is the highest "good" of human life. IE. Selfishness. And in this case, the prioritization of our own wills above the will of others, and even above that of the will of God. They do a very good job in the show demonstrating Lucifer's hedonistic (and narcissistic) thought processes by showing him saying things like "What about me?!?!" at almost every turn. And as they develop his character, they demonstrate how he "changes" in this thought process.

Watch any of the cop shows that include interrogations. People confess all the time almost immediately. It seems silly when the criminal seems to just give it all up after only a little evidence is presented, but it's also pretty accurate.

Regarding the intricacy of the plot for the detective story, if you look at IMDB you'll see that the series/seasons as a whole has a creator (Tom Kapinos), an executive story editor (Jenn Kao), and a staff writer (Chris Rafferty), as well as the writer for a given episode. Each of the big three also write some episodes. This episode was co-written by Kao with Jason Ning, who is a producer on the show. The pilot was written by Kapinos, who is also a producer as well as the creator. Last episode, #2, was written by Joe Henderson. He wrote 17 episodes of the series and was also a regular writer on White Collar, another police show, so he's not bad, but it's not hard to guess that the last episode was just him finding his footing. The series writing does smooth out over time, but it is a show that has multiple writers so that will cause some style issues between episodes.

21:01 Lucifer in the series is kind of nerfed down compared the comics. In the comics, he’s like the second most powerful being in the DC universe after the Presence (God). Lucifer can travel through dimensions, can travel to the edge of the universe in seconds, can destroy planets, can create planets by manipulating energy, can raise the dead…etc.

This show really made me think about the devil in a new context. Sure he runs hell and he tortures the souls there, but the souls that are in hell are bad people, so Lucifer has always been a character, be it religious or fictional, who punishes evil doers. That kind of behavior is most associated with heroes in modern media. That's way I think this show is a great show, it forces you to think.

I'm having so much fun watching your reactions to Lucifer. It's such a fun show, even the episodes that maybe aren't maybe the most cohesively put together. Because the characters themselves are so interesting that it's impossible not to be pulled in. Interesting about your visceral "evil" reaction. As you say, we all bring our lives and experiences with us to any media we consume, so I really do think that's interesting. My background was devoid of any religious teachings about Lucifer/Satan/The Devil, so for me he's always been a decidedly fictional character from books, movies, etc, so I don't have that reaction at all. I never really imagined having such a reaction, so I appreciate you mentioning it. Good reminder about everyone's differing experiences.

In the original DC comics, Lucifer's impetus to leave hell came from encounters with Dream (aka Morpheus, Lord of the Dreaming) in the Sandman comics. The Sandman didn't cover much about what he did next, but another writer picked up the character and ran with it. The full range of Lucifer's powers would be impossible to cover with a shows regular budget, and the character thankfully plays into this minimizing his abilities because that kind of exertion is a bit boring for him. The Netflix series Sandman has covered a little of the interactions that kicked everything off as well as playing Lucifer closer to his blond, David Bowie roots by way of Gwendoline Christie's performance. A side note for the show was that they apparently tried different accents, but many of the things Lucifer says just came across as less than charming and just being a general douche. The accent used has gone a long way to keeping that rakish charm.

After the first episode the show was filmed in Vancouver so the temp is way cooler. Most shows do a location switch and do the first area shots on location. I remember way back when the Dukes of Hazzard moved back to California. Yeah North GA does not look like sunny CA. Oh well.

There were a lot of shows around this time about odd characters helping the police out. This was one. There was Nathan Fillian (from Firefly) in Castle as a murder mystery writer, Simon baker, "the Mentalist" as a carney/ conman, "Numbers" had David Krumholtz (also from Firefly) about a math genius. Off the top of my head. There were maybe others.

The other big one would be White Collar (2009) in which an FBI agent brings on a counterfeiter to help catch similar high-level non-violent criminals. I can't recall who played the leads, but the agent's wife was Tiffani Amber Thiessen.

The producers are threading a pretty fine needle here. They have a supernatural comic police procedural, so the fan base is going to be fractured. You'll get the people who'd normally watch a sitcom vs the people who'd normally watch a police procedural. (Which generally arent that funny) The crime of the week is just a McGuffin to provide Lucifer and Chloe a series of goals for them to build their relationship on.. The complexity of the case will vary to provide each segment of the fan base, something to look forward too. They only have 42 minutes to give the complete story arc of the murder of the week, plus a few jokes, Lucifer's relationships, Chloe's relationships - the story boards for these episodes must be quite crowded... Also this series was in a relatively new genre. The female led action comic adventure. Starting with Chuck (NBC 2007) and then Castle (ABC 2009) you have strong female characters in a violent profession Sarah, the CIA agent who protects Chuck, who in turn assists her in solving her cases... And Detective Kate Beckett who protects novelist Richard Castle while they solve crimes together...Oddly both of those series have a Firefly connection... Adam Baldwin (Jayne on Firefly) co-stars in Chuck... and Nathan Fillion (Malcolm Reynolds on Firefly) stars in Castle. Both would be excellent candidates for a reaction series... Chuck is 91 episodes but Castle is 173 episode - that maybe thats a bit much...

Lucifer, the character in this show, is all about free will…although, he is like a teenager who has hormones all over the map and still needs to mature so him showing people their desires and encouraging them to follow those desires can be chaotic. He still needs to learn and understand human emotions and the responsibilities/consequences humans learn as they mature. Thanks again for a great reaction ❤

i once read a book while i was in high school. In the book, a bunch of demons had escape from Hell. A priest and a mage team up to send the demons back to Hell. They are aided by a woman with the last and most powerful of the demons. It is revealed that the woman is in fact Lucifer. She tells the 2 men to think of Hell as a prison. The Fallen Angels are the guards and she is the warden. Something to think about.🤓

Second unit in LA, but still they couldn't hide some of the foliage and incessant precipitation from that miserable rain forest climate in some outdoor shots...

Lucifer is very much a continuation of the idea od the sympathetic devil as originally portrayed by Milton. The audience is invited to sympathise with the Devil and his rebellion against absolute divine authority. :"Far better to rule in Hell rather than serve in Heaven. Bugger that. I'm off to run a piano bar named Lux in LA." Paradise Lost was very influential in casting Lucifer as the Spirit of Rebellion, rather than the earlier traitor to heaven who was cast down into the pit for his perfidy in challenging The Throne. It is also seen by many as a commentary on the failure of The Restoration, where once again a tyrant was placed on the throne of England.

This is probably one of my least favorite episodes of the season, because of that bad guy monologuing at the end. Lucifer's funny throughout, but yeah, what savvy bad guy -- who, earlier in the episode, already said he should ask for a lawyer -- would keep talking about what he did? I know they had to explain things because they'd been pointing at 3 other possible killers, but... eh, it was a bit heavy-handed. They do it much better in other episodes. In fact, I love the next episode. Can't wait to see what you think of it!

The whole concept that "the devil is evil" is plain wrong. That part of mythology was introduced in early medieval Christianity, and I always found the logic convoluted. If there is a being who's entire existence is "to punish the wicked", it can't be evil. A truly evil being would "encourage and reward the wicked". And that's the same line of thinking this show (and its source comic book) present. By the way this is also the very reason why so many religious organizations had huge problem with this show and tried to get it banned and shut down. They hate when something exposes their nonsense. Which Lucifer likes to do.. expose ;)

Since morality refers to things that are right, immorality has to do with things that are wrong - like stealing, lying, and murdering. The general premise that's involved in arguing as to why these are wrong refers to the Golden rule and the conception of selflessness versus selfishness. To sacrifice a behavioral cost, so that you might treat others the way you desire to be treated. It is commonly believed that morality demands we choose between sacrificing other people to ourselves (which is deemed “selfish” and therefore immoral) and sacrificing our own values to satisfy others’ needs (which is deemed unselfish and therefore moral). Thus effectively, the basis of Good and Evil tends to philosophically be viewed as the difference between selflessness and selfishness respectively.
