this is were we see the real Lucifer: underneath the smiling, witty, and charming mask, there is a lot of pain, a lot of anger, and Tom Ellis's performance shows this brilliantly.

Definitely my favorite scene of the series, and not just because it's adapted straight from the comic. Tom really shows just how OUTRAGED Lucifer is at how HE has been treated by his Father, how his punishment was far in excess of his crimes (in his opinion). But what REALLY makes this scene shine for me personally, is that he's right. Free will, baby: he doesn't force anyone to do anything, we choose to do it... and then he's the scapegoat for all of it. Not cool... Plus I love how utterly ICY he gets when his oldest and most cherished name is spoken aloud. I think this series does a great job of showing just how HURT Lucifer is by his Father's treatment of him, no different to how a rebellious and anti-social son would lash out at the world after being psychologically abused by an inscrutable, domineering, over-bearing father.
@TheCrusaders138 жыл бұрын
Very true. That's why I loooove this show. Being Christian most would think I hate it but I love it purely because of this scene. I've never seen it until now (I was late to the show) but he's right. He's blamed for soooooo much and to be honest it isn't always his fault it never at all. Maybe that's why some don't like it. Hits a nerve. His only issue is pride. That's what got him kicked out. If that's what they're using. I don't know if they are.

_The line is commonly misunderstood. She wasn't implying Samael meant Light Bringer, she was listing two separate names he once had. Fantastic clip, definitely my favorite scene in all of season one so far. Also, a lot of people are hung up about the "Samuel the Lightbringer" name, but I don't think that she was saying Samuel meant Lightbringer, she just added that connotation to the end to signify Lucifer's identity when he was an angel (and thus the lightbringer.) Obviously Lucifer would never call himself a Lightbringer in current times since he was cast into purgatory, which is why the therapist added it to his former name. Anyway, it's such an excellent show in that it depicts the actual lore of the Bible, I'm an atheist personally but I always thought it was neat how Lucifer was an angel who granted all of humanity free will. Think about it, Lucifer was an angel and thus 100% morally good - he was trying to help humanity by tempting Eve with the apple, because he knew that humanity would hate being robots with zero ability to make decisions for themselves. And he was exactly right, deep down in Eve's subconscious she knew she hated how boring and meaningless her existence in the garden was, so she ate the apple and thus all humans were given free will. Lucifer genuinely did nothing wrong.
@neopagan19768 жыл бұрын
+Elliot R I totally agree. I think this show is doing a wonderful job of improving lucifer's reputation which I think has been completely misrepresented over the centuries.
@anonymous5358 жыл бұрын
***** Absolutely, that's a huge reason why I like the show so much despite it being a cheesy police drama. When priests say that Lucifer "created evil", it's really not accurate because he actually created free-will, and human used that free will for evil which absolutely isn't Lucifer's fault. Lucifer was an angel, angel's can't really sin as far as I know, so Lucifer was proving a point to God, showing that God was wrong in thinking that the Garden of Eden was this perfect place when in actuality Eve ate the apple because she didn't want to be a robot anymore. Also it's ironic that I like certain Bible stories despite being an atheist haha, I also like the story of Mary Magdeline "let he who is without sin cast the first stone" because I think certain Christians could really benefit from it, as in the ones who scream out "all gays go to hell!" with their picket signs on the side of the road.
@Charolette218 жыл бұрын
+Elliot R So in away, Lucifer is the Christian Prometheus. Prometheus gave fire to early humans against the wishes of Zeus and the pantheon(along with other things that happened at the same time), humans became intelligent enough to do what we could do. As a punishment, Zeus chained Prometheus to a rock on the Caucasus Mountains (constantly having his liver eaten out by a giant eagle, dying, and coming back to life everyday). In Lucifer's case, the punishment was not quite as violent but they both risked their lives and reputations to give man the chance to be more than mindless slaves to an unfeeling high father.
@anonymous5358 жыл бұрын
Jacob Albers Exactly, that's an excellent observation. It's amazing how similar religious fables can be. Ancient Greek religion and ancient Christian religion are not as different as people think. Also, fun fact, in the Bible God kills hundreds of thousands of people, likely even millions based on some estimates, where as Lucifer only killed at most ten people (Job's children) after being ordered to do so by God himself.
@Charolette218 жыл бұрын
Elliot R Thank you Elliot, took me a while to make that comment. Its' honestly quite hypocritical for the Greek Pantheon and God & the archangels (minis Lucifer) to be seen as the good guys since they willingly decimated cities (hell the whole planet once) just because they thought the world was unclean and need to be cleansed. Christianity was quite willing to blame Lucifer for all their sins and terrible deeds because we want to see ourselves as good and pure (were simply dicks to him just so we could keep on fueling our ego).

Considering that Samael literally translates to "Posion of God" and Lucifer means "Light-bearer" or "Shining-one" I think I understand why gets so upset being called Samael. Lucifer is a representation of his accomplishments and the fact he isn't evil. Samael represents his servitude towards God. Samael is also said to be the angel of death and destruction in some mythologies so it is likely that he also hated the job and everything conotated with it. In his eyes, God had said from the beginning that he was always meant to be cast out and be vilified. It's no wonder he hates that name and everything it stands for, and I don't blame him.

The more and more I think about it and analyze it, Lucifer has to be the best show I have ever seen! From the story to the plot to the music to acting, everything is spot on! Sure, it has one or two mistakes but they are easily outshone by the rest of the masterpiece that the show is. It has that dark aura in the lighting that reminds you you're not dealing with just an angel, but the devil. While keeping the color and bright lights of Los Angeles. The chemistry between Lucifer and Chloe are also amazing and the actors do a awesome job of portraying that! Out of all the greatness and the one or two mistakes, there is only one problem I have with it. Why couldn't have they kept the original Dan actor on board? Nothing against the new man himself, but he just *looks* like a douche with that tan and hair and stupid goofy smile. And personally, he certainly knows how to portray a douche real well. I honestly can't understand why Chloe ever fell for him in the first place (so not her type is seems) and I can't take their chemistry (even if they are playing a divorced couple) seriously. I'm certain the other guy would have been much better. The new Dan just seems like someone they grabbed off the list at the last minute. Oh well, everything else is perfect that I guess I can live with that one flaw. Exceptional show! I would highly recommend it to anyone who ask.

This is 100% tied for my favorite portrayal of the devil. Just tied with Supernatural's. They both show what pain can do to a person. The different ideas of them are amazing.

SAMAEL IN HEBREW MEANS "VENOM OF GOD" NOT LIGHTBRINGER, LUCIFER IN LATIN IS LIGHTBRINGER
@TonicHikariGaming8 жыл бұрын
If you were paying attention to the video and weren't trying to just seem like you knew what you were talking about, she was saying The Lightbringer was another name he went by, not that Samael meant Lightbringer.
@bicarbonat18 жыл бұрын
No, the line of speech (erroneously) implies that Samael means Lightbringer. That is why Lucifer continues to react negatively to her calling him "Samael" - Lightbringer (Lucifer) _was_ his original name given by God. She correlates that positive name to the love that Lucifer also reacts harshly to. It's an understandable oversight - considering that his true name was given straight out of the gate, they couldn't "reveal" an original name with that Lightbringer aspect. In this scene, the emotional value is: true name = wing loss = purity/love loss = trauma. The trigger that is explicitly, repeatedly used is not the word "Lightbringer"; it's "Samael". Which tells us that "Samael" = "Lightbringer" in this scene (regardless of correctness).

_This is based off lines of dialogue and such from the comic books, which I've memorized. She is not saying it means Lightbringer._

Lucifer Morningstar Based _on_, not verbatim. Adapted for television, filtered through other writers and producers with their own ideas. I think the very fact that Lucifer is decidedly not blond is a cracking indication that some liberties have been taken. Congrats on your memorization, though.
@TonicHikariGaming8 жыл бұрын
_Well, there's actually countless parts of the show where lines are directly ripped from the comics, word for word, which is scary. Also, someone asked Lucifer ifnhes supposed to be blonde as a reference to the comics, but he can change the way he looks as he can manipulate matter; hence why he shows people the red, skinless "devil" face to scare them, even though it's not how he actually looks. He's done it once or twice in a few issues._

DC lore-wise, Lucifer had always stood for free will, something even to this day and age no fictional character has ever had, he is perhaps the only one that truly has it,

One of, if not the best scenes in the entire series, although they got the names completely wrong. Samael is supposed to be his evil name. Lucifer is the name that means lightbringer.

eh, she kind of deserved it in my eyes. she has no idea what shes talking about, and is just spouting generic bible things like "god is love" and whatnot, without actually listening to what hes saying. instead of leading the conversation to where he has to think and reevaluate, shes just arguing with him. and hes visibly upset by the conversation, yet she keeps pushing him and keeps using the name samael even after he clearly states that doesnt want to be called that and is increasingly uncomfortable and upset at the conversation. i love that at the end of the clip when lucifer blows up and storms out, she seems to be thinking to herself "well that was a stupid fuckin idea, whoops" a lot shows tend to go for showing any emotional upheaval as a breakthrough in therapy, when in reality, this would have been a huge setback for him, and could have entirely broken his trust in her. just because he showed actual real emotion for once doesnt mean its positive or beneficial. all she did was piss him off and upset him to the point of violence, Great Job, Linda. it wouldnt have shocked me if he had left and never came back after she pulled this. its one thing to push someone to healing, its another to just reopen old wounds for no reason. fuckin stupid idea on her part tbh. not even because its lucifer and i love his character, shes just genuinely terrible at her job in this scene

Technically, Lucifer means “light-bringer” and Samael means “Gods poison.” And it’s heavily implied that Samael and Lucifer are two separate beings.

Just incase people dont know how important this scene is , when he says from 1:44 to 2:02 that is comics from the comic between lucifer and The Sandman in this show he says it Dr. Linda Martin but in the original comic he says it to the sandman

This show coulda been good. Those first 3 seasons needed to be shorter and more streamlined. It had reallt good moments like this only to backpeddle everytime because they had to fill 24 episodes a season and the plot couldn't move to fast
