I really enjoy this series. There are so many minor Roman figures with their own stories which deserve to be shared.

I think it's a great narrative technique in general. Focusing on the minor figures to get different angles at major figures. You could do a movie/series on someone like Scipio Aemilianus but the main character is Polybius. Same with Flavius Belisarius and Precopius. Instead of Marius and Sulla why not Livius Drusus and Metellus Pius?

@@Theodosius_fan I agree that he was not a minor figure in terms of his importance at the time, but I think we can both agree that he is less well known than his brother and many other Romans of that era.

Thanks man. Sometimes it's nice to have a lecture on history without all the film, music, and whatnot. Hope you keep it up.

Hey Thersites, I love your content. As a viewer of a years I've noticed more of a pivot to longform live streaming. Not hating on the people that enjoy it, but I want to let you that I still really enjoy the lecture/presentation type of videos, be they 15 minutes or an hour and 15. Thank you for making your knowledge freely available.

I still enjoy making these, it can just be a little harder to set aside time (and make sure that roommates, neighbors, etc. aren't being loud) to record them. I am actually working on two videos right now but my roommate is taking a shower, so I can't record until his bathroom fan goes off.

Always enjoy these sections about the more important background players of history. They offer more detail about the context and possibilities of major events and players. Anyways, while you are on the topic: I am still hoping to hear about a tier-list of the best generals of the Roman Republic Civil wars. All the way from Marius, Sulla over Caesar and Pompeius up tp Octavian and Antony themselves! Would be most exciting to see how a Sulla would Compare to Caesar or Antony to Pompey for example. If possible: get Sean onboard, he might be interested. Just a thirsty recommendation from a long-time fan.

How is Julius Caesar their cousin? If their mother was cousins with Julius Caesar, then that makes him their uncle
@baswar Жыл бұрын
No thats not how that works at all. The only uncles you have are the siblings of your parents or grandparents and/or the husbands of your grandparents and parents. Anything beyond that is a cousin. Hence ceasar was Octavian's (great) uncle and antony's cousin. Though not sure if it makes them second cousins as those labels get confusing
@baswar Жыл бұрын
Unless your referring to L. Julius ceaser? Who indeed was antony's uncle but he was the cousin of G. julius Caesar.
@billychops1280 Жыл бұрын
@@baswar yeah that’s what I’m saying, if my dads brother is my uncle and his kid is my cousin then how is my cousin’s kid also my cousin that makes no sense I’m my cousin’s kid’s uncle because I’m a generation older and I am cousins with his father and I’m the nephew of my cousins uncle (this probably would have been easier to understand had given everyone names)
@baswar Жыл бұрын
@@billychops1280 because thats not how uncle's work. Your cousin's kid is your 1st cousin once removed I believe. Anything beyond the siblings of your direct ancestors is a cousin. G. Julius is too distant a relative to be considered an uncle of some kind (though the imbred nature of aristocrats does make that more confusing)
@baswar Жыл бұрын
Oh also after looking it up i think Antonius was a very distant relative of G. Julius ceasar - i think Antony's mother shared a 3x great grandfather with Julius ceasar. Though confusing amount of the inter marrying between aristocrats may also make it closer so i could be wrong. Either way the relationship is too distant to use the term uncle. Hope it helps the understanding and not made it more confusing
