Don't short sell the Ceres letter. They just discovered the asteroid belt!
@donsample10026 жыл бұрын
Herman Von Petri -- and Ceres spent almost as long on the books as a planet as Pluto did, and got removed from them for pretty much the same reason: they discovered a bunch of other things in similar orbits.
@HermanVonPetri6 жыл бұрын
Don Sample, indeed. Even now Ceres ranks as a dwarf planet on par with Pluto. If not for the fact there are so many other objects in its orbit Ceres would fit the technical definition of a planet today.

If you pause and read the Herschel letter, it's a "I don't have the right kind of instrument with me right now, may I suggest..." sort of letter. The one James picked is the real confirmation.

Ceres is very interesting from a mathematician's viewpoint since Gauss rose to fame by determining its orbit.

I love how Brady got visibly upset by the Everest comment - like Keith knew that that was exactly what he should say to get under Brady's skin.

Objectivity is without a doubt one of the most underappreciated channels on KZbin. When you compare the quality of video with the number of views, it feels like you've discovered a cool underground band and you can't understand why everyone hasn't heard of them.

This should be a flagship episode for your channel. The material alone is fantastic. The luck to get such iconic topics is rare, and back to back is righteous. This is a great example for the Royal Society. The how, why, what, and if questions are asked.(plus the good joke on the black border). Kieth, Brady, and James set up an expectation into Maths and show a desire to view Maths' history. And kapow! Here is Ceres and Newton , History and Collections, Interest and Sharing!

Pardon me for blowing my own horn a bit...but when I saw Ceres I IMMEDIATELY thought of the asteroid. I can remember Mick Marinchak doing a book report in 4th grade on the discovery by that Eyetalian guy. And the Newton stuff is cool too....I didn't realize Newton had a residence in Lincolnshire. Great pull, Grimey!👍👍😇😎

Anyone who wants to argue that Pluto is a planet, should take the time to look into the history of Ceres.

There's scope for doing the same thing with the R.S. Fellows & Members list. Randomly selecting a member from the long history and finding out about their life and work and how and why they became a member. Lot of things to discover there, and also see if their work is still valid today or has been supplanted by newer discovery. It could be called 'on the shoulders of giants'....quoting Newton to Hooke.

"Frederick Manning" and I immediately though of F. E. Manning, but it's probably not the same one. Manning must be pretty common. Would be interesting to see what the Royal Society has on F. E. Manning, though. I love his book on "Old New Zealand", but it's not exactly scientific in any sense, haha
