I just lost my female G-shepherd of 12 yrs, she weighed about 85 Lbs. She was easy to train and she loved her frisbee and Kong ball. It was beautiful watching her fly through the air to catch either item in her younger years. We had to put her down last wk due to hip dysphasia that came on very fast. Due to covid, I was repeatedly asked from one vet after next to drop my dog off at their office and just drive away and they would take care of the euthanasia process. The idea of this killed me, this dog was so faithful to me, always by my side and I couldn’t imagine not holding her at the end. She was in so much pain though, I had to what was necessary in the end. I’ve never had a panic attack ever in my lifetime until it was time to say goodbye to my faithful friend. When they came to take her away I nearly passed out and I could hardly breathe bc I was crying uncontrollably. Thankfully someone in the office took pity on me and allowed me to hold my beloved pet until she took her last breath. If this happens to you, don’t except it. I can’t believe they would ask anyone who has had a long term pet to just dump them off and drive away. It’s wrong in so many ways especially when that animal gave you nothing but unconditional love.

There are many places to go these days that are less like animal ERs and more like Hospice. If there’s a next time find a place like that. I did in 2019 and I’m SO glad. They were so kind and compassionate. They give you your own room with a couch a comfortable blanket for the dog. Even a box of tissue in the room. It’s decorated to feel comforting and they get the IV ready and then give you time alone until you’re ready and have a button on the wall to buzz them in. I’m glad you insisted and got to spend your last moments together. It’s incredibly hard but your pup deserved to be with you when it was time to go. Very sorry for your loss, it’s hard to imagine how difficult it would be but shows what incredible companions they are and why they’re known as man’s best friend. Best wishes.

I'm very sorry for your loss. For future reference and for other GSD owners, exercises or activities that include jumping should be limited to avoid things like Hip dysplasia or Elbow dysplasia, especially while the dog is growing. Supplements, or foods, that contain glucosamine and chondroitin can also help.

My female GSD served in army for years and was the most disciplined dog I’ve ever met. Yes, a bit slow in reaction, but didn’t affect the performance whatsoever. More so, she was more maternal towards my other dogs and trained them out naturally. As opposed to male, she didn’t need a ‘dominant’ figure to tame her and was less interested in lurking around seeking adventures.

There are also countries in which spaying and neutering is less common (I believe a person in Finland mentioned it?), but I'd have to check that for myself. They say the dogs there are also fine. Also, the lack of hormones actually makes them taller, not smaller (but usually leaner). If we had a large colt at the horse farm I used to work at, we’d sometimes leave them intact longer to help slow down the upward growth to help avoid joint disease in the ones that grow tall too quickly.

I had to say goodbye to my female GSD a few months ago. She was a very large (not fat) girl at about 90 lbs. She almost made it to 13 years when her back hips just didn’t work anymore. Saying goodbye was the hardest day and time of my life. She never bit another dog or human, and was the most amazing mammal I have ever known. So loyal and easy to train. Your dog reminds me of her, thank you for the video!

We are about to get our female. She’s also a West German Showline descendant. Her entire lineage is traced back to the late 1800’s with pictures. We just got 2 kittens and want them to grow together. We lost our male German Shepard, Chuck Norris, in February this year. He was just shy of 15. He was also the runt and was a smaller male. Very smart dog. Scary smart at times, lol. Miss him desperately. We also lost our cat Boo Boo 3 weeks later. She was 16 1/2. Home was too empty and quiet. Miss them both so much. Lucy is beautiful and such a good girl. Thanks for making this. We have been waffling between a female (available now) or waiting for a male. The cancer issue. We never neutered Chuck. As a result he developed anal cancer. He was neutered at age 13. That stopped the progression, but he had a sore bottom at all times. Glad you brought this up, important to consider when to spay. Chuck well outlived his counterparts. He was nearly 15. Ours had no hip dysplasia. He remained active as his puppy stage. He started showing his age the last 6 months he was alive. He was our sweet boy.

Dog age can vary so much! Our neighbours had a Labrador who was born a month after I was. She died when I was 20! And she was very healthy for a very long time, she only deteriorated quickly towards the end (mostly blind and deaf, and finally, she wouldn't eat anymore). She was an amazing dog and we were all really grateful that she had such a long happy life!

This was the first "Lucy" video that I have seen. I also have a Female GSD. She weighs 76lbs but is fit and trim. Penelope is also larger than most females that I have been around. I prefer female dogs in general, I am 59 years old and have only owned 2 Male dogs. Intelligence is one of the remarkable traits of my Penelope, I am amazed at how fast she picks up on what I am training her to do. She is one of the most loving dogs I have ever had. People always say that certain breeds should be the only dogs in your home. I have had 2 female Akitas I always heard you can't have smaller dogs or animals while owning Akitas that has never been the case, I honestly think most troubles or problems stem from "weak" or "inexperienced" owners. I currently have 4 dogs a Pitbull, Chiuhauha, Poodle and GSD. They all get along they will sleep and eat together. My Poodle is 18 years old, blind in one eye limited vision in the other and she is very hard of hearing but she still plays and act goofy. My German Shepherd will herd her away from the pool, will stop to let the Poodle walk in front of her, enter the house first and will "take" the Poodle outside to go potty.

I had a female GS named Molly. She died about 2 months ago and it has been hard without her. She was trained to attack but only on command, besides that she was the sweetest and very very gentle with babies and kids. The reason why we trained her it was because we got our house broken into twice. This veterinary in specific recommended us a female GS. We got her when she was a puppy, we pay around $1,300 for her and they trained her and we spent a couple of thousands for her training which was very worth it at the end anyways. These are amazing dogs I would definitely get another but for now I’m not ready emotionally. 🥺

You are so right about female German Shepherds. We've had 4 of them, smart, obedient, loyal, protective,and beautiful. Our 4 girls we got at different times. Jackeline "Jake" our first, was pretty much spoiled, although they all were, but since we were lucky enough to have our own business at the time, she got to go to work with us every day. Pretty cool for a puppy at 8 weeks old. She went shopping with us, even went to dinner with us. Sadly she passed at 8 years old from CANCER. We had another dog, a Lab mix. She was devastated as were we. We decided to get another, "what we would call Jake dog". We found one, a German Shepherd not a for real Jake dog. No this one was Comet. A beautiful little girl, she made us and Yeller, Jakes sister very HAPPY. These 2 were Mommy and Baby. Sadly Comet passed at 7 years old from CANCER. A few years passed and we got another Shepherd Sylver, she was about 9 weeks old, how many times do I have to say Beautiful, but she was. She fit right in, got along with Yeller, she had all the same benefits as the other dogs, maybe more. She was happy as could be. She could sleep with us anytime she wanted, same thing all the others did. We live on 10 acres of land, so all the doggies had plenty of room to explore, but we always had an eye open to where they were. I think you know where this is going, yep she died of CANCER. The last dog we had was a dog named Morgan, she was really different from the rest. We got her from a nephew that was having problems with her, and he knew how much we liked shepherds and knowing how much land we had, he thought it would be the perfect fit, so did we. Turned out it wasn't. we took Morgan to different Vets, and they all said there was nothing they could do for her. We had no choice but to put Her down at 2 years old. We talked to the breeder, who admitted it was all a mistake, that it should never have happened. She even said she would come to VERMONT, from CONNECTUT to get the dog and take care of her, and we had a bad feeling about what she was going to do. Morgan wasn't living in our home for that long, but she didn't have to be, any dog that comes through our door is FAMILY Bye the way Yeller lived to 16 years old MISS THEM ALL, But why do Shepherds have Cancer Issues???
@specialtwice49752 жыл бұрын
Could be the breeding of that specific line. Did you get your dogs from the same breeder/dog parent? Maybe it was just genetic. Next, dog food. Were you feeding your dog the same kibble as the last? Some dog foods aren't great, and yes, can cause cancer. Another is a lack of excercise. Did you take your dogs out more than just walking? Were some over weight? (Based on what you said, I doubt this is the case) Finally, it could just also be bad luck. German shepherds are known for a lot of health problems, usually hip. But yeah, it prolly was a multitude of things.
@sharonreum31342 жыл бұрын
It's usually the food. Try feeding a raw food diet and your dog will live much longer.
@jackiekjono2 жыл бұрын
Any dog breed that has gone through a period of extreme popularity may be prone to these issues. If you breed young animals to other young animals and continue to do that for many generations their telomeres lengthen and make them more prone to cancer. Always breeding young animals to young animals is the cheapest way to turn dog food into puppies but is probably not the best practice-especially if you do it for multiple generations
@donaldnevgonhapniv30842 жыл бұрын
Breeding and feeding are the two primary issues. Show line dogs such as Lucy have a tendency towards more health issues working bloodlines tend to be healthier.

I own 2 female German Shepherds and they are indeed easy to train. This can be both a good and a bad thing. For example: the other day I trained our youngest (2y) a new trick in about 15 minutes and she understood it from the get go. Our oldest "learned" that if she barks at people passing by that they "disappear". Once they learn something it's really hard (nearly impossible) to correct it. I was amazed to see how Lucy stayed this calm through the whole video. Very impressive!

regarding early desexing and growth - what actually happens when you spay or neuter your dog early (under 18 months of age) is that the growth plates do not close like they are supposed to as that hormone has been removed via the desexing. Therefore the desexed dog keeps growing and ends up taller or larger than the intact dog. I have a young intact male GSD who will remain intact unless there is a medical issue and he has to be desexed - but not under 18 months old. I practice responsible dog ownership so he will not be allowed to roam or anything like that. I really enjoy your videos, thank you. You have done an excellent job with Lucy, she's such a lovely GSD. Love from all of us here in sunny South Africa

When my kids were young, one of their friends down the street owned a female German shepherd. Her name was Shelby which I'll never forget because my youngest daughter's name is Shelby also. This dog loved her human and all the kids in the neighborhood. If any one of them ventured to close to the main road, she would run over and actually herd them back until she was satisfied they were safe. She was an amazing dog and we all loved her. Now, 20 years later, I have a 122lb male 1/2 German shepherd, 1/2 great pyrenees. He is super smart, really large and thinks he's a lap puppy. Lol

I grew up in the 70's with a female German Shepherd. She was not much of a guard dog and was probably one of the sweetest German Shepherd's you would ever meet. The only problem is our backyard was about 1/2 acres and we had two dogs, two cats and two kids (so she had company) she would always scale our 6' fence to get out. The sad thing is my mom re-married and my step-father didn't like dogs so when my brother and I were visiting my grandfather for the summer, my mom took her to an animal shelter and left her there....she was 12 years old so she probably was never adopted. That is probably why I have always felt that when I get a pet, it's for life....animals should not be disposable when they don't fit your situation anymore.

@FPrimeHD16182 жыл бұрын
@@blueyedmedic911 I definitely had to deal with puppy biting :). There are a few different tricks you can do to help with the biting, just be aware that it takes time. The first thing I do is always redirect their attention to something else, preferably a toy. If it continues then I will get up and walk away. The puppy will eventually figure out that the fun stops when the biting starts. Another fun method I like is to let water run down my hands and whenever the puppy licks it, I follow up with positive reinforcement. I would also recommend games that require your pup to think, especially a working line. The reality is that it's going to happen a lot as a puppy. The other side of it though is that I use it as a bonding experience with my GSD. I don't mind her lightly biting me, but I do have her trained to start / stop, as well as only doing it with me. Hopefully this helps!

I have not hurt her in the least. Passive didn’t work. Medium didn’t work. Extreme didn’t work. She just comes back more violent and harder than before. I’m a chewed up mess. I have to apply peroxide 5 times a day. They r bordering on infected because she has bite me 10 times in the same place. I watch videos on KZbin if these GSD and 1 method stops in in 5 minutes. @@blueyedmedic911 You sound absolutely exhausted. Raising a GSD is no easy task. I would recommend getting a mouth guard for the time being to give yourself a break. They are amazing dogs and I love them, but they can also be straight up dick heads too lol. I don't know your level of expertise with dog training, but in this situation I cannot begin to recommend a professional enough, one that has experience training working line dogs. You might be checking off all the boxes of what should be done, but other things are off. For example, you could be redirecting, but your timing is off, or your body language is telling a different story than what you're trying to convey. Heck, it could be something as simple as assuming your pup understands the word "no", but really doesn't. YT video's will only go so far, they lack the necessary feedback you need from a trainer when learning how to train a dog, especially a working line. I speak from experience here, I thought I could handle it on my own, I was massively wrong. The minute I hired a professional trainer they helped fine tune where I was going wrong, and over time training became so much easier. My GSD pup is almost 2 years old and I can't begin to tell you how fun training is at that age. She's hitting her stride, she's confident and proud, we understand each other and are in sync. It is so damn rewarding and worth all the heartache I went through (very similar to you). Please though, for your mental health and dogs well being, hire a professional. As crappy as it is to say, you always have to remember what your dog is capable of with improper, or no, training. You may have the best intentions in mind, but it can spell disaster. I wish you the best of luck!

In those three years I fully rehabilitated her, she was terrified of other humans be sides me. I got her to coming running excitedly to new people and barking at the mail man before she passed. Best dession I ever made, was taking her home with me

What a beautiful German Shepherd. I lost mine (Lily) last year after 13 years of companionship. Miss and talk to her everyday 😞 You are 100% right too on the fact they take more notice of who’s doing what with them at specific times. I wish you lots of happiness with Lucy.

I don't know who said it first but the quote "May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am" has real meaning after a GSD. No one will ever love you more or show more loyalty (if brought up well). My current girl, Sallie Sunshine, will be 13 years old in a few weeks and is still obsessed with me. She thinks that I am incredible. It's been an amazing adventure sharing my life with her.

@Marina NGUYEN Oh my...You are incredible and amazing also. Don't you know that? You are a child of the most High God. You are prized. I meant to compliment the breed. A GSD will give you love and loyalty that makes you feel you are the most important human in the world. I know exactly what my GSD thinks of me by her actions and I am just trying to live up to her expectations. Don't worry about my pride too much, I have two cats to remind me of how I'm not that great or special at all. LOL. Sending good vibes your way....

I grew up with a female and had one later in life and they were great. Last summer I got a male GSD puppy from a breeder and he's so good too, amazing temperament. Love him 💕 He is lean and healthy and 80 lbs at 10 months and very easy to train

Lucy must be knew you were talking about her. It's the reason she had stellar performance. BTW, I had a German Shephard when I was 4 years old in the USA.

I'm going tomorrow to rescue a female gsd! She is 8 months old and very shy and scared of everything. They kept her in a cage 24/7 and didn't socialize her. I think they was mean to her as well. But once she gets with me it's going to be nothing but love and fun. Can't wait to make her life better!!

Work, but well worth it, she will be so loyal to you after she learns that she is loved.

I just miss my old dog. My mother was a dog trainer and did search and rescue. My dog died a few months ago and a great dog. She always was the best dog in search and rescue.

I've had 3 female and 2 male purebred German Shepherds and I have to agree with everything in this video. My males were a lot more aloof, which made them harder to train, but not bad. They just took more repetition and treats. Lol They seemed to get distracted more easily too. My females were easier to train and were the more protective of them all. They weren't as territorial as the males, they just seemed to pickup on things that were out of the ordinary and were way more observant of their surroundings. My last one was a "big boned" line, she weighed in at right around 100 lbs and was bigger than the rest. She could tell when someone was drinking alcohol or was buzzed, and she would shy away from them, but would keep her eyes on them. She had such an inate shepherding streak, she used to corral my young nieces and nephews when we would have family gatherings. Lol. My nephew was really scared of dogs the first time that he met my girl Libby. She was really calm with him and careful not to play too rough, and my nephew grew to adore her. When I get a bigger home, I am getting another shepherd. I've had dogs my whole life, but after my first shepherd, I was hooked. I've never had a more loyal, loving, protective dog and best friend, than my shepherds, especially the females.

Rescued a female GSD from neglectful owners who just wanted to love. Came into a home with elderly poodle and bossy schipperke. She became the caretaker of the family, guiding the poodle, and played underdog to the schip who was 1/6 her size. My elderly father would send her out to "bring in the baby" and she would get the other dogs safe inside. They taught her to be the ultimate lap dog and the joy's of the whole pack sleeping together in my bed with me. She loved kids and adored nephews and neices and could romp at whatever pace they wanted but would always step forward to stand in front of them if a stranger arrived. Brilliant, lovable dog. Of course the hair shedding is continuous and enough to build another dog weekly. She shed in 3 colors, black, tan and white so there was no safe color to wear.

We do know which vacuum cleaners do the best, but I gave up and take her to a groomer every month to 6 weeks. Even cut down quite a bit, she still looses hair - it is just easier to keep the house down to where people don't want to leave upon entering. :-(. She is so loving and smart and beautiful.

My female is also a west German. She is larger than US Germans and most males LOL! Her pray drive is very strong. I can say my female was much easier to train than my male. She travels everywhere with me and is never left behind, unless I am traveling overseas for work. But, that is only for about a week. Always a female Shepherd for me.
