The guy in the video kinda glossed over how cruel the British were, and also glossed over how a tiny army beat the whole British army into a ceasefire using geurilla warfare, and actually revolutionising how that tactic was worth.
@XXXTENTAClON2272 жыл бұрын
You can’t fight an entire army with guerrilla warfare. That’s not how it works. Guerrilla warfare is simply blending in with civilians while actually being a soldier, aka using them as human shields. Then, when the inevitable unjustified murder happens, they blame the people who shot them dead, thus you gain more recruits even though you just used their family as human shields. And in todays age, it is borderline unbeatable because international opinion will plummet due to modern media/journalism and so will the army and its morale. For example, in the Boer Wars they just stuck them in camps instead. That doesn’t work however when cameras and journalists are watching. Additionally, you said the entire British Army. Considering that it’s not even acknowledged as a war by historians & that they had reached their maximum size for the biggest empire in history, I doubt you even managed to fight 5% of their army let alone 100%. They were also quite literally at war with Afghanistan after WW1, and in conflict in the Middle East every year afterwards.

The Conquest of Ireland arguably wasn’t fully completed until the Act of Union in 1800 when the Kingdom of Ireland (after centuries of constitutional and regime changes) was forcibly merged into the British state (though our civil service and courts remained separate, and we retained our legislative representatives). Those representatives forced to sit in London instead of Dublin, but went back to Ireland in 1919 and declared independence in a reconstituted Irish Parliament (copying the Hungarian walkout of the Austrian parliament in the 1860s). European history is very complicated as you can imagine ..
@fyrdman2185 Жыл бұрын

As someone who has lived in Northern Ireland all my life, you've done a pretty good job Lud. However, little bit of clarification, the 20th century fighting - the Troubles - was mainly Catholics Vs Protestants in NORTHERN Ireland, not between the Republic and NI. Now because of a funeral, Brexit, the Irish language act and a few other factors, it's looking awfully like the troubles might start up again in NI, rather than just NI joining the Republic

11:01 just want to add that the reason Sinn Féin won the majority of seats was because most people were shocked at the British reaction after the Rising in executing all the leaders and arresting thousands of men suspected of being involved. Most civilians didn’t agree with what the rebels were doing during the rising (they were even spat at on the streets) but they became sympathetic towards them after the British reaction.

I took a class on the Irish Literary Revival movement in the 20th century last semester (I’m an American who happens to really like Ireland). It was fascinating. As far as I know, one thing that this video glosses over is how the British basically annihilated Irish’s gaelic culture, to the point that its language is progressively dying. When Minx says she wants her country back, it’s probably because it’s hard to miss the fact that hardly anyone natively speaks the Irish language and so on. You look at something like James Joyce’s short story “The Dead,” and you realize just how depressing that fact is, that there’s just this massive history of the Gaelic Irish people that’s slowly fading away as time passes. I highly recommend anyone interested in Irish culture to look at Old Irish mythology and it’s various cycles of legends (we focused mostly on Fionn mac Cumhaill’s Fenian Cycle and the Ulster Cycle). It can be super confusing, but it’s fascinating to see just how rich this seemingly forgotten mythology is.

For the 1916 rising most irish people ignored it until they executed the leaders, and that caused the war of independence. Fun fact: Micheal Collins was due to be executed but escaped and then led the war on Britan and the civil war
