This is especially interesting considering what you’ve said about how Sanji and Luffy were the only Straw Hats to bond over their big dreams. Sanji’s dream, the discovery of the All Blue, is a sea with all the ingredients of world. This idea, a sea with all the ingredients in the world, can easily be seen as a necessary component to Luffy’s larger dream of a world without hunger. As you’ve said Luffy’s dream of a world without hunger can easily be read as a creation of paradise. And if you consider it as that, many of the other Straw Hats’ dreams are also an element of creating such a paradise, most notably Chopper’s dream of curing every disease.

After thinking about it, I can see how other Straw Hats’ dreams tie into this idea of a true paradise. Nami and Franky’s dream to map the whole world and to build a ship that can sail every sea will allow people to travel wherever they want; Robin’s dream to learn the true history is about the broader idea of allowing people to know their history; Jinbei’s dream of bringing the Fishman to the surface is obviously a dream of true equality between the different races.

If this is the dream, I think it’s interesting that all three Monkey D’s have essentially the same dream, but each took their own path towards achieving it. Another way to look at it is they are the three forces needed to keep a good system in balance, truly good marines to patrol, a force to monitor and oppose the government when necessary, and a string of independents who go around solving the issues that go unnoticed or can’t be resolved by a structured approach.

the reason why I disagree that luffy's final dream is to solve world hunger is that sabo, ace, wb and oden thought that luffy and roger's dream was childish. A world where noone goes hungry/no inequality is a noble dream and not a childish one. Ace warned yamato not to laugh at luffy's dreams. If someone told me their dream was to create equality for everyone I wouldn't ever think that was childish or something to laugh at, I would think that's an amazing goal.

TBH i personally don't think that luffy has revealed his dream so suddenly and easily because Roger had the same dream but oda didn't give any reference to Roger. But if this is the case i think we can get a flashback of Roger revealing the same dream in the next chapter if oda wishes to touch upon the dream topic and really wants to reveal. There is another possibility like how kaido was shoke on hearing luffy's words (dream),it might be possible that kaido had the same dream at the some point of his life.

I think this is an interesting idea and I can absolutely believe that it’s luffy’s true dream. But I don’t think it is, mainly due to the way it was revealed. It felt unrelated to luffy’s core desires at the time that he said it in chapter 1049. I think it was mainly related to this wano arc, like when he talked to doflamingo about feeling suffocated in dressrosa right before finishing him. I believe that luffy’s dream would be revealed more explicitly, because at this point, it’s become a fairly big mystery. This is too ambiguous to be a reveal to such an important mystery imo.

I agree with you... The problem with this dream Morj has brought up is that it doesn't connect with Shanks. Shanks supposedly says there's a boy who talks exactly like Roger in the East Blue, which means his dream and ideas started from there and not afterwards. If you think about it, Luffy as a kid hung out with Shanks and experienced a partying life with his friends, which leads me to believe his true dream is to hold the biggest party in the world where everyone can join in. This is why he sought after a musician before a cook, why he keeps wanting to party. Even in the Roger flashbacks, we see a lot of fun and partying. This hunger dream is completely Wano related, but can be a facet of the Partying dream. It just doesn't connect in place everywhere, while the partying dream seems to slot itself everywhere.

As a venezuelan immigrant, Wano has resonated with me on a deep level. It reflects the situation in my country so similarly it's uncanny. The worst part of the food scarcity wasn't just going hungry, but seeing everyone around you lose weight slowly, being unable to come home with food for your family, and seeing children grow smaller and smaller and die. We even had a neighbor that killed her baby because she couldn't afford to feed him. Not having access to water for weeks on end. Electricity shut downs for days. Illness ravaging the population and no medical care available. Meanwhile the government fattens up and hoardes the money they stole. Oda probably isn't necessarily refencing the stuff I experienced but I hold its significance close to heart.

I don't think this is exactly Luffy's dream but is a window to figuring out what Luffy's dream actually is. The caveat is in Kaido's wording. Kaido didn't ask what Luffy wishes for but rather what type of world Luffy wishes for. I can wish for a world that is full of peace and never has conflict but that doesn't necessarily mean that is my dream. I've always held the belief that Luffy's dream is to have a feast with the whole world. This seems childish enough for kid Luffy to think of but yet has enough ramifications that could change the One Piece world.

that's why his dream is to have the biggest feast/party with lots of food. That is something he looks for in every island! In Skypea, for instance, he had a party for 4 days after defeating Eneru, after mentioning time and time again he wanted a feast. We all know by now Skypea kind of explains One Piece as a whole. Solving world hunger is too "serious" for Luffy, in his mind he is thinking of having the biggest feast, which is childish, which will then translate in solving the inequality problem. Adventure is important for luffy sure, but he is always focusing on what comes after that, which is food. To celebrate. He is not trying to create a new world or something. He is just trying to have a blast and eats lots with everyone. It's just that his actions will lead to this new world. We can't ignore that Luffy is a simple, straightforward guy, his dream won't be a deep secrete, it makes more sense to be something he is always sharing with everyone. And I think this fits.

We already know that he believes the PK is the most free, also implying that its the strongest title. Because in order to be the most free, one would truly have to not fear and not let anyone/anything defeat said person. We know luffy wants to be so strong that literally NO one can hurt/take/kill any and all friends. So becoming PK he knows that there will be no one to oppose him etc etc thus allowing him to create such a world. Knowing that the emperors have some variation on the dream of world equality, Blackbeards dream is now the most intriguing as that is the one that is being setup to rival luffys the most and the one we know the least about. I dont yet think we have seen the full extent of luffys dream but this reveal is a big hint. With luffys df embodying him and his dream that would also be the same for blackbeard. I think blackbeard wants to trigger a ragnarok level event and plunge the world into eternal darkness. A world where dreams would literally never die. No one will die. everyone becomes essentially their own version of hakuba a warped reality on who they are. Dreams would literally be who you are and people would no longer dream towards anything. This reflects on what rodger says will never stop as long as people hunger for freedom. I belive the climax of the series will result in these things stopping and the conflict will be if it stops in regards to luffys dream or blackbeards dream No one will have the hunger for freedom either because everyone is free or because everyone can no longer understand the concept of freedom. The ages would stop as only one would remain the ages will never change again. And inherited will ends because there is no need anymore to seek meaningful change. This may have also happened before during the void century Another question is shanks true dream is it just inherited will via the strawhat from rodger ? All shanks needs to do is enable luffy.

Since Artur gave the idea of "throwing the biggest party of the world", it's been the theory that convinces me the most. This would certainly fit with this statement from Luffy to Kaido. @FunkiMonki69
@FunkiMonki69 2 жыл бұрын
Not to say that this definitely isn't Luffy's dream, you've certainly made a good case for it here, but there are 2 reasons I have that make me question that: 1. Essentially ending world hunger is a noble cause yet when Ace, Soba, Whitebeard and co. heard it they were sort of stunned like it was something weird. Even when Ace told Luffy's dream to Yamato he expected her to laugh but why would she laugh at the desire to feed his friends and family? 2. The reveal was too lackluster for how important it would be. It certainly had an impact on Kaido but something as important as Luffy's true dream shouldn't have such an ambiguous reveal to where us readers wouldn't necessarily catch on or have doubts about that really being it.
@CloudCollapse
@CloudCollapse 2 жыл бұрын
I really don't see what's ambiguous about it. He stated it very directly and it was at the absolute climax where he lands the finishing blow on Kaido. This is as explicit as it could possibly be. And yeah I can see why Sabo and Ace would think it's funny based on the wording. It's very different to say "I want to end world hunger" and "I want my friends to be able to eat as much as they want." The latter sounds much more child-like and silly.

@@CloudCollapse The reason I say it's ambiguous is because he didn't say it in the usual context. Where before it was important to highlight that Roger has the same dream, we didn't get that confirmation now. If this is really it we'd expect Oda to show Roger in some way saying the same thing, maybe in a quick flashback or as a vision next to Luffy and have them say it in tandem. Luffy's dream has been built up as another important mystery so the reveal should make it unmistakable this is his "dream", afterall Kaido asked what kind of world he wants to create not what his dream is. This might be a bad analogy but I see it as imagine the Straw Hats found the One Piece but it's not mentioned they're on the last island and everybody only calls it a huge treasure instead of the "One Piece". We'd be left pretty confused there because we expect these important things to be announced clearly to the reader. And to the second point, I personally don't see why Whitebeard or Ace and Sabo would laugh at "I want my friends to eat as much as they want" but I guess that's just a matter of opinion. I've seen a lot of speculation in the comments about the wording maybe being the funny part, but I think that's just another thing that would confuse the reader. The reveal should have the exact same wording. If we get Roger's quote from the book and it's something like "I want enough meat in the world so I'll never have to share mine again" then we need to make the connection ourselves and be like "Oh so he kinda said that against Kaido" and that's not all that impactful imo. edit: I should add we could potentially get all that clarification in the next chapter maybe Luffy goes "afterall my dream in this world is...." and then we get the full flashback to where they say it but I'd need that to believe it.

If Oda really want to go there, he could explore the positive vs. negative freedom arguments. Basically, is it true freedom when you are enabled to do what you want or when nobody can stop you from doing what you want. The sea would be negative freedom and land would be positive freedom. It would be a nice way to keep the focus on the main theme of the story. Only problem is that the more explicit the political messaging in the story becomes, the more it has the potential to alienate those who disagree. One of the nice things about one piece is that most people can enjoy it. On the other hand, it is pretty common that the true message of a story becomes clear towards the end. As long as it is handled well, most people will be ok with it. Even if they disagree.

It has already been explored in basically every arc. Everytime Luffy goes to an island and saves it, making it so everyone is free, the arc doesn't just end like that. Every time the rightful rulers that care for the people are restored in each island. The world Luffy will create won't be an anarchy, it will be un utopistic society where everyone is happy and free but still ruled by good hearted people that will make sure there is no inequality.

My 3 problems with this are 1st - Luffy didn't really have much friends if any other than Shanks & his crew the first time he declared it (to none other than Shanks & his crew) , unlike now , where he has friends all over the world. 2nd - Prior to receiving Shanks' hat ... he hadn't really experienced the harsh inequality of Goa & the world just yet. 3rd - And this is just me but , I don't see Oda wasting this "Reveal" by leaving it this ambiguous , denying the readers the payoff of "OH , It's just what Roger said", when he could have just cut to a parallel panel of a Roger closeup beside luffy's closeup declaring the exact same world, almost as if speaking in unison , only elevating the poignancy of the "climax" that much more. Finally feeling what Shanks had felt all the way back in Chapter 1 ... over a 1000 chapters later , the moment he realized that all this time he was just a conduit to his Captain's hat , that all this time, it belonged to this kid. Instead of realizing later .. "Oh that thing , yeah it's what roger said" , "oh wow ... cool"

I still think it's Artur's idea that's right on mark, that is, throwing the biggest party ever. Luffy's statement in this chapter ties in really nicely with that. Ace and Sabo/Oden and WB wouldn't laugh at Luffy/Roger if he said "I am going to create a world where everybody gets to eat", but saying "I am going to make the biggest party ever" is somewhat laughable and covers the "everybody gets to eat" sentiment.

While I can see why some might it funny, but I am not sure why Sabo, Ace, Whitebeard, and Oden find it funny, all big dreamers who would not laugh at others dreams for being too difficult. I agree with your thoughts in general, but I'd also add this: since ideals like world peace or no starvation are kind of generic, regular and simple views, to provoke such reactions from Newgate, Oden, Sabo and Ace, Roger and Luffy's true dream needs to be put out in a really silly way that makes it sound not only eccentric and weird, but also original and funny

@@-tom-8720 Yea, but those are also noble dreams which anybody with great aspirations, in this bigger-than-life context, could hold. My point - and as I've seen I'm not alone here in this comment section - is that, even if the subjacent idea is to create a world where hunger doesn't exist, to make the listeners put those "wtf dude really?" faces, Roger and Luffy needed to go beyond childish with their wording. Specially Luffy, since Sabo and Ace are children themselves and an idea that's just childish shouldn't faze them I also believe that Oda needs to come up with something special here in order to make a big impact. Revealing the protagonist deepest motivation, dream, goal or whatever, particularly at this point, isn't just a random little detail in the story.

It's an admirable dream, who laughs at people with a desire to feed everyone? Are they psychopaths? ESPECIALLY when you grew up in poverty or in close proximity to it. But then in classic Morj fashion, you laid out the evidence and I'm much more accepting of the idea. The reactions of Ace, Sabo, Oden and Whitebeard still need explanation though. Luffy and Roger probably phrased it in such a way that has significant impact on the dream itself.

I think Luffy’s dream is to buy the world back from the Celestial Dragon and free it. His dream is basically a bigger version of Nami’s goal in Cocoyashi. And when Nami failed at finalizing her bargain, Luffy had to come in and destroy the tower, freeing her and everyone else in the village. The parallels are all there: Arlong = Celestial Dragons - both demanded heavenly tributes Nami’s room = Fishmen island Arlong’s tower = Mariejois Mikan trees ideally grow with plenty of sunlight = sunlight tree Eve Only after Luffy purchases the world’s freedom or destroy Mariejois by force like he did Arlong’s tower, can he throw all the feats and parties that he wants. “I want to buy the world!” sounds like the kind of ridiculous wish that would make White Beard, Oden, Ace and Sabo look at Luffy in such a perplexing way. P.S., Of course kid Luffy didn't know who the Celestial Dragons were back when he made that declaration in front of Sabo. But he knew that lots of treasure can be used to buy freedom.

I don't think this is Luffy and Roger's hidden dream. However, I do think this chapter is aligning with Luffy's role in this world to bring about equality and provide everyone with the basic needs he didn't experience as a kid. Recently, with Kaido's backstory and the reveal of Luffy's actual fruit, I think it's more relating to Joyboy and what he wished to accomplish while he was still alive. Chapter 585, the boys all shared their dreams. When Luffy told them his, Ace was stunned and Sabo burst out laughing. A world with equality and where people had all they need are the last thing Ace and Sabo would find absurd or crazy. Ace reacting in the same way Oden and Whitebeard responded to Roger. I still think Roger and Luffy has a silly childish dream. Oda wanted to make a childish and goofy character from the very start, I wouldn't be surprised if Luffy's dream is just as ridiculous as his fruit has become. So I believe this chapter was more towards the dream of Joyboy and Nika and will definitely play a big part of whenever we get to Raftel. I really don't know what the hidden dream and that makes me so excited to see what else Oda has to reveal about our favourite smiling rubber boy 🥰

Great video as always Morj! Initially, I wasn't really convinced that this could be Luffy's real dream; simply because it would feel weird to me why Ace and Sabo would laugh at that (because in itself, it is not really a ridiculous dream but more a unrealistic one). But yeah after you drew the parallels with the Goa kingdom it totally makes sense. In this state of his life, Luffy only knew the property and class inequality he experienced. So it does make sense for him to change this so everybody can truly experience freedom; the most important concept for Luffy. And it's also fitting for the Warrior of Liberation who is the embodiment of freedom.
@Mr-ON

@@Mr-ON Yeah, I still kinda agree about the laughing part; I could understand why Ace and Sabo laughed at that (especially Ace was more a skeptic as a child so for him it was more like a "Yeah right, if that would even be possible"-laugh). But Whitebeard and Oden are still weird to me with their comments (that Roger's dream would be "childish). Why would it be childish to create a world where everyone is equal? Unrealistic sure, but childish? But I mean, it also depends how Luffy and Roger said it to them. As Morj mentioned: Food was a more simplistic way to frame this dream in the moment. So I could see a young Luffy using some funny wording to express his dream (same goes for Roger). And I saw in the comments the idea that some of the strawhat's dreams contribute to this world, Luffy is seeking for (ex. Jimbei wants the Fishmen and Humans to live together under the same sun or Sanji's dream of the All Blue what could technically provide a pseudo-unlimited supply of food) This sounds like something Oda would do and it would be an easy way for him to put the dreams of the crew in the focus (I'm still not sure how Oda wants to fulfill EVERY strawhat dream in the story when some of them seem more like beyond end-of-story material.) The part with creating this world only for his friends could be solved with Luffy's ability to make friends everywhere or something like that. Have to admit that I don't have a idea for this one. But I kinda think that Oda put this restrictions in so that Luffy would not "really" become a hero (according to his very own definition) because creating such a world for only his friends could still be considered as somewhat "selfish" (because he could do it for everyone).

I just realized what if wano isn't a 5 act structure but luffy vs kaido is, Act 1 we get introduced to kaido and his overwhelming strength, Act 2 scabbards vs kaido, Act 3 roof piece, ends in failure luffy falls into the sea, Act 4 Yamato vs kaido, Act 5 gear 5th, Ending "Act" 5 with gear 5th this feels like a oda thing to do.

I don’t think the focus is on “equality” as an ideal. Rather on the destruction of corruption. The very structure of a pirate crew is intrinsically hierarchical. This puts the focus less on “equality” and more on basic proper human behavior. The rulers are not portrayed as being evil because they are “rulers” rather that they are pursuing selfish and corrupt ends. King Cobra is seen as a benevolent king. Though equality as an Ideal is broad enough as to stretch into the realms of anarchy, being as the king is more privileged than the rest.
