in smash 4 luigi was not able to hit opponents behind him with a sweet spot b-reversed up b. In ultimate they changed it so now even if he reverses it he can get the sweetspot. I believe the same things goes for the aerial version, pretty big buff for a game where characters go for cross up options a lot.

the problem with luigi is that hes super inconsistent. one time you can get an interaction and deal 50 and possibly even take a stock but the other is you can get put in a juggle situation and take 50 for trying to land because your landing options and getting out of the ledge are super predictable. or you can get tossed off stage get gimped or misfire the opponet killing them super early

Right and in Ultimate that makes a character bad. Virtually all of the bad characters in ultimate are bad because they are polarizing or inconsistent (DK,Lucario,Luigi,Metaknight,Little Mac etc.)

Before I saw this, I looked at Luigi down tilt and found it had 13 total frames. That’s even less lag than ROB’s, which if I remember correctly has 14 total frames. Not much of a difference at all but you have a frame 5 dtilt vs a frame 3 dtilt and the one with more startup has more active frames and less lag. And yes, I paused the video before he said this.

most characters are mid tier, doesn't mean bad. Pretty balanced. I say he is what people say he is. fear is also a part. I play min min so anything with terrible horizontal movement is just easy to deal with. he cant catch characters so you can always bait a jump and run under him.

I've always thought he was at least low high tier. Overlooked recovery, broken grab and zair, stupid projectile, stupid down B, instant death if you space poorly on his shield, Sheik frame data he can just abuse with Mario-like safety, and of course, he touches you once and you're either dead or at kill percent. You can try camping him out I guess but he gets in once, you're suddenly at a higher percent than him and you have to approach him while he camps you out with zair and fireball

Luigi has a good recovery as long as he either gets a misfire and/or Luigi still has his double jump. Cyclone is not useful if you are below level beyond mixing up timing which I don't think is good enough because the opponent has enough time to adept. I just think Luigi loses hard to swords.

Hey Larry, one thing you got wrong that idk if anyone’s pointed out: The 0-death isn’t actually true on a lot of characters. If you sdi down and into Luigi, he will not be able to complete it. If you’re a big body like Bowser you’re screwed tho lol If you look at the clip early on in the video with spargo and elegant I’m pretty sure he does this sdi and forces elegant to go for a regular high damage combo instead

When Luigi uses down tilt against the opponent's shield, the opponent can act 2 frames sooner than Luigi can due to the block stun being smaller than Luigi's recovery time from his move. However, moves have start up frames (a vast majority of them being slower than 2 frames) so Luigi is very safe when using this move against a player's shield

I think Luigis kit is so unbalanced it creates some stale gameplay...like the way the Luigi is built up his grab and aerials are too prioritizing. So most Luigis go for ZTD grab the entire game because its optimal and most people dont know how to SDI (And a good Luigi can read SDI so either way youre screwed once they grab) I think Luigi needs a deep rework. It's nice you highlight his other moves though because when youre not on stage and grab isnt the same Luigi has a lot of nice options. But yeah his kit needs an overhaul.

Problem is Smash always seems to prioritise adding new characters over refining old ones. Which I get - the new characters are the money makers, it's just good business sense. But it does mean some veterans are stuck in this sort of sad limbo where their movesets are neither particularly well designed for gameplay nor do a great homage to the character's canon.

I appreciate you pointing out Luigi's strengths, but I feel like you failed to recognize his weaknesses, like his poor ground and airspeed, mediocre landing options and difficulty dealing with disjoints. You also didn't mention that green missile (and misfire) are way overrated. The endlag is ridiculous, the hitbox is tiny, and it doesn't even cover his head, so all you need to do is throw out a disjointed hitbox or even body-block Luigi and he dies, not only that, but every green missile towards the stage has a chance for you to get your head stuck, which is a free stage spike and I believe misfire has a 100% chance to get stuck, the most egregious part that I haven't heard anyone cover is his stage tech-jump. Sure you may be able to haphazardly throw out moves by the ledge, but if you tech-jump a stage spike, your air-speed is so low that you actually can't drift back, this problem is unique to Luigi because other characters in the bottom 5, heck even bottom 10 lowest air-speeds has a move that allows them to quickly shift their horizontal momentum to get back to stage. This was a good video as usual, but definitely one sided.

@@prestigeblue I don't think he sounds bias though? If anything he's bias towards the actual evidence that is coming forward that Luigi is better than people think. If you're ranking characters based on how hard their learning curve gets then its safe to say that Luigi isn't easy to pick up and rank highly but, he does have the necessary tools to do so. He simply requires a little more on stage awareness than most other character to help cover up his off stage weaknesses. One more thing I'll say is at riptide, Elegant messed up a lot of combos that look like they could have been Z2Ds. Whether that was because of SDI, rage or just pressure doesn't take away from the fact that he still came 5th (I think) and didn't rely a whole lot on luigis insane combo game. I think considering the relatively low number of top level luigis, he is a pretty well developed character.

Honestly, outside of some neat little technical details, this video didn't really show me anything new. Before I watched, I was of the opinion that Ultimate Luigi isn't competitively bad, but he *is* very badly designed, with his entire gameplan gravitating around his grab and encouraging his opponents to avoid interaction at all costs. Big agenda vibes here. Saying Luigi is underrated when just about every bracket has at least two Luigi mains is weird. Luigi is not good, and relies on a bad tether grab to advance his neutral game. People get addicted to his burst damage from grabs, but it's just the problem of getting it with such a bad tether. Also, Falco straight dunks on Luigi so it'd make sense for Larry to provide influence for a character that his main crushes. To say that zoners lose the war of attrition is accurate, but he doesn't mention Jack's of all trades like *Falco* who approaches by zoning. Jack's seem to be the best archetype in this game with the exception of wario. Previous iterations they sucked because sakurai wouldn't give them projectiles with good frame data except for fox and Falco in melee. Now you've got palutena, peach, pacman, wolf, pyra, and gnw all at the top of the tier list with the best player picking up Diddy Kong. All of which fall into a jack archetype. Luigi could be considered a jack, but not really with how polarizing his grab game is. It's more appropriate to set him in the grappler category. Larry lying to yall
