As a survivor of child abuse, this song hit like a ton with me when it was released back in 1987. I still can't listen to it without tearing up a little bit, and I am a long way from that little boy who was the target of his father's anger so long ago. It helped me cope, and drove me to seek help for my own anger problems. And thankfully, I was able to stop the cycle when I had kids of my own.

I think this song speaks to the parent in all of us. I can't hear it without getting emotional. Very moving vocal, with a very clear mood shift for first time listeners when the other shoe drops, and they piece together what the song is actually about. All in all a beautiful job by Suzanne Vega.

You say it's not much of a reaction. I think it was an excellent reaction.

Don't feel bad that you didn't know her. A lot of people I know do not even have any interest in anything besides what they normally listen to. She is one of my favorites and I'm speaking as a musician. So I give you credit for trying out her music.

You really need to do Janis Joplin's "Ball and Chain live at Monterrey Pop ". I'm telling you, it will blow you away. It has more views than almost any vid on KZbin. Yes, she's that good.
