It’s not Jedi/empire. It’s a suit that shows his curiosity if you notice in a new hope he had white on throughout all of it same with the second movie but in empire strikes back he was wearing black indicating he was experimenting with the dark side and attempting some of the abilities. If you pay attention to Luke in ep.7-9 you will hear him say the Jedi order was wrong and they should use emotion and should use things that the original order said not to. And if you would notice in ep.7-9 he was wearing Grey robes indicating him taking on the role as neutral or a grey Jedi even though it was never said so.

She never mentioned the fact that the Inquisitors all started as Jedi. A few were recruited and trained after the fall of the Jedi, but Vader, the Grand Inquisitor, the entire first batch.... Jedi hunters are former Jedi. They're the only people who routinely handle one negative emotion so poorly that they slaughter countless innocents. Avoid them, Luke.

In legends, Luke found out after the Dark Empire comics. He found out about Shmi, Padme, and order 66. I liked how that Luke was adamant about understanding his family's past and knowing that the dark side was always going to be a struggle for him especially with Han and Leia's children. In this canon story, I think Luke finding out about the purge, the inquisitors, and the rest of Order 66 is a nice addition to his journey. I believe that he will understand how Emperor Palpatine rose to power and how much of a hold he has on Vader. I think the next issues will explore Luke's turn from Obi-wan and Yoda's advice: why he chose to believe that Vader still had the light in him because he was manipulated and used as a weapon for Sidious.

Sir Alec Guinness told Mark Hamill this before we saw a lightsaber ignite on screen, or right after. Luke always knew. You don't have to ask whether the children were spared. The whole Galaxy knew what Darth Vader did. That was the point of how Palpatine introduced him. Luke knew.

I like the constancy this story keeps with of fearing Vader's offspring, such as is the case after the fall of the Empire. Many of the New Republic holds a lot of fear from, specifically, Leia because of her connection to Vader. Darth Vader is such a feared and hated figure that any chance of something like him happening again is unfathomable to so many, likely from many personal experiences, such as is the case with Verla.

I remember how this was explained in the books in legends. It devastated luke. R2 encrypted the footage and tried to hide it from him. But eventually luke was able to access it and it left him feeling so conflicted. It was an emotional experience. Well written.
