Very true, it's incredibly forced and out of character for Luke, it feels like they intended it to be a comedic punchline, but the sequel trilogy already has more than enough forced comedy, so why insert it here where it doesnt belong? Oh yea, because the people who made this only cared about appealing to literal children and not the fans who actually grew up with the series, which is why it's filled with obnoxious moments like this that are supposed to be "funny", cuz literally tossing this franchises' legacy away like it's trash is totally hilarious and not incredibly disrespectful and meanspririted

I understand what they were trying to go for here, and I like the idea of Luke being so angry at himself for his perceived failures as a teacher that he cut himself off from the force and went into isolation, but Rian Johnson shitting all over everything established in TFA for the sake of "subverting expectations" really hurt the sequel trilogy in the long run.

There's often a problem in sci-fi/fantasy franchises, which is that people keep wanting bigger and more impressive powers as time goes on, which leads to the characters eventually being able to destroy entire planets and travel between universes and all this ridiculous stuff that totally removes any sense of immersion. I remember being there opening day at 7pm early screening, Hearing that yo momma joke earlier at hux made me feel different, but I let it slide since sure, some comedy is always welcome. When this happened and when snoke died that’s when I knew this was terrible, even though I found it hard to convince myself backs massive disappointment especially after loving episode 7 and waiting 2 years for this

I think people would have less problems with this if they felt that Luke's transition into this kind of character made sense. But it didn't. Why did he try to murder Ben, when he was the one who redeemed Darth Vader? One was a Jedi Padawan (I believe?) who was dealing with feelings of neglect by his parents (according to Adam Driver, the movies never tell us why he turned), the other was a full on Sith Lord. If Luke could have hope that a Sith Lord could turn to the light, he should have had hope that Ben would choose the light as well. And then maybe Ben turns anyway because Luke (like the Jedi before him) didn't know how to help him deal with his negative feelings. Luke realizes what happened, blames himself and his blind optimism, and exiles himself in shame. Thus, we have a reasonable, understandable background behind the change to his character. But Rian Johnson really just wanted to play up the surprise factor at every single turn. Sometimes people just don't know how to find the balance, they're just like "This thing is good I NEED MOAR". Of course, people would be very happy if we got to see him as a wise old Jedi Master, knowledgeable and more capable than the old Jedi Order and Council. But this could have been acceptable too, if they put just a bit more thought into it. Of course it's easier to take something that someone's already finished and suggest improvements than it is to make it in the first place

Yes, people come up with the argument that you make mistakes in real life and then you give up on everything. That is not how it works, there are reasons and it is a long process which culminates into that..Especially if you were motivated before. That 20-30 year gap was not handled properly, and then that 1 day transition between TFA and TLJ was also messed up.

I remember I watched this for the first time in theaters and once Luke tossed his lightsaber in a comedic fashion in what should’ve been an epic powerful moment, I already knew what kind of film this was gonna be tonally and I wasn’t prepared for the garbage I was about to witness.

@@BigT.Larrity bruh, have you not watched Return Of The Jedi, like, ever? He knew there was good in his heart and even Vader said Luke was right about him. Luke even shed a tear for him as he passed away. Yeah Vader was a warlord with countless murder under his name but he redeemed himself with defeating the Emperor. You obviously ain’t watched Star Wars in a minute. In the end he still saw the good in his father and that’s what he wished to remember of him, we see Anakin’s ghost in the end so we know he redeemed himself.

Me and my dad loved this scene. Really balsy of them to do this considering lukes purpose here. He came here for the jedi to die along with him so it would make sense that not only would he want nothing to do with it he wouldn't care why she was handing it to him either

I’m a Last Jedi apologist (yes I really did like it, I don’t care what anyone thinks) that behind said I genuinely feel this could be the worst moment in the history of the Star Wars Saga. And by that I mean Episodes I-IX.

Luke throws the lightsaber for a few reason: 1 he has his own, 2 Luke disagrees with this particular blade at first because it reminds him too much of Ben Solo, 3 he realizes how important it is when Rey shows him that being a Jedi is more than letting go of the past: Jedi embrace love and truth because that’s what life is about Luke also knows about the history of this blade and refuses to use it anymore. Rey ends up with Leia’s lightsaber and this is destroyed in this film. She only uses Anakin’s lightsaber in Rise of Skywalker to help her defeat Sidious

Rian Johnson did what he could as a writer, and I respect him for trying the best he could do to fix JJ Abrams’ mess. In The Force Awakens, Luke completely abandoned his best friends and his nephew when things got hard. It’s weird. Its completely out of character. So in order to make it seem like he’s not a complete coward, Rian makes it so that Luke genuinely believes the best thing for the galaxy is to just let the Jedi die, otherwise it’ll be a constant fight between the light and dark forever.

this is clearly a different interetation of the scene. in the force awakens luke and rey lock eyes and there is an unspoken understanding. rey gives him a look of heywe need and luke has the look of I knew this would come.but in the last jedi luke looks confused and rey is also confused. rey looks like she has no idea what she's doing and luke looks at her like" why are you giving me this, what is this and just like i don't want this. the force awakens version is a lot better. rey going to the planet should have been in the begining of the film and have the footage from the force awakens and then cut to rey explaining things. in the force awakens luke looks like he understands what he needs to do but doesn't know if he can while in the last jedi he's just grumpy and like"i don't wanna". i'm editing the sequel trilogy right now and that one of the aspects i'm going to fix
