Literally every one of the tests and benchmarks in these reviews focuses on maxing out the computer's performance and, as a result, biases your brain to think that the Air is a total slouch because *of course* it's not as fast as a Pro. In reality, the Air is a well-built, portable, snappy little computer that does a GREAT job with writing, editing documents, doing research, keeping up with your email, etc. If you run demanding tasks like video and photo editing, get a Pro. Period. But if you don't, the Air is a very good computer and a big step up from 2019.
@surajchowbenemohanraj84424 жыл бұрын
Totally agree but why even give the option of a quad core processor if the need is to run simple tasks. I would say it's just unfair for the user.
@patricksmith13614 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried the dual-core 2020, but I had a dual-core 2019 Air and it felt... slow. I think the quad-core i5 just runs those relatively simple tasks better and more quickly. It feels crisp and capable. An i7, on the other hand, makes no sense to me. A processor or RAM upgrade is a nice addition for your Air, but once you start trying to "spec it out" you really should just get a Pro.

Same here. I was 90% sure i'd be going with the base MBA with i5 and 16MB of ram. Now i'm thinking that for an extra $100, I should go with the base MBP with the same specs. Aside from 8th gen chip and slower ram, and tbh, these won't be making a real world difference. How hot and loud one will run WILL make a real world difference. The screen on the MBP is also has slightly better color and 20% brighter. Or I could go with the base i3 and only bump up the ram for future proofing it a bit but then again, not much future proofing having a dual core as the brain of the machine. Man on man... I keep my Macbooks for a very long time (MBP '07 still works. I don't see myself investing in a dual core laptop in 2020...

I found this video very interesting. I purchased a base model Macbook Air 3 weeks ago. As it was my first ever Macbook I assumed that the dual core I3 would be adequate for some iMovie editing, excel, word etc as well as the usual things like KZbin etc. The latter is true but trying to edit basic 20 minute videos even in 1080p on a dual core Air has been horrible. It stutters and lags and takes an eternity to export the videos. The entry level Air truly is designed for the most basic tasks and very minimal multitasking. Luckily I have managed to arrange a return to Apple outside of the refund policy as I was so unhappy with the product. Ive now ordered the 2020 quad core i5 MacBook Pro so hopefully will have a lot more luck with my editing. Seriously, I hope this helps anyone who was considering anything a little more taxing against buying the Air.

I returned my 2020 i5, 16gb, 512gb ssd MacBook Air. Im coming from a 2015, 15inch pro with dual graphics, but decided to switch to the air because of the form factor and because my workflow doesn't require too much power. HOWEVER, I really cannot recommend this laptop, maybe the i3 version as it runs a lot cooler than the i5 version. but my i5 version was constantly above 70. degrees at just the most menial tasks, the fans would spin and be unbearably loud. I installed Macsfancontrol and that did not really help as the fan spinning faster didn't really drop the temperatures due to non existent heat pipe in the air. The air was at 70-80 degrees plus with just safari at 5 - 7 tabs, Mac photos app, Spotify, discord or Skype. sometimes while on a discord video call, the laptop would be at 90 degrees with just safari open. The real killer is when it comes to screensharing. Ive been using screensharing a lot more due to covid-19 and how we are working from home more now. the MacBook Air cannot handle screen sharing at all! Even with just safari with 3 - 5 tabs open, once I start screen sharing, the processor instantly shoots up to 100 degrees. the fans are at full blast and the screen sharing would be ok for the first 3 - 5 minutes. After that, the computer slows to a crawl and is running at maybe 20 fps. This is probably due to the boost clocks going down due to high temperatures. Ultimately the laptop is unusable. I understand the design of the MacBook Airs cooling system. the fan in there is acting more as a case fan instead of a cpu fan. think of it as an exhaust fan at the back of a computer tower. HOWEVER, It couldn't have hurt to just put in a heat pipe to let the processor stretch its legs abit more. Id avoid the air i5 and go for the i3. Or even the base model pro if you need bit more power.

So a clear recommendation for the I3 from me!

Hi Luke! Upfront full disclosure: I am an IT guy familiar and constantly using the Apple products line-up, however I am not an Apple products’ fan. My beef with Apple is regarding their business and pricing approach as well as the right to repair issue. Their products' quality is undeniable, especially the pleasurable “touch and feel” experienced while using their products. I just believe that the pricing/performance ratio does not justify the selling price. The disclosure put aside, I would like to tell you that it has been a while I watch your KZbin reviews and “how-to upgrade” videos. Even though I have not always shared your opinion I have always enjoyed watching your videos. I admire your obvious passion for the Apple products as well as your balanced approach: you give credit where is due, but you do not hesitate to be critical of Apple’s failings. I've been doing some audio and video editing using just iMovie and GarageBand, which I think are all I will need. But I am starting to create some videos that might be 20 or even 40 minutes long, with some B-roll and transitions and audio interludes, either in 1080p or edited from 4K source footage. I've been getting by with my mid-2012 Air and managing a lot of this, including 720p video stuff, but it's time to upgrade. I'm going to stick with a 13 inch because I move around all the time and love the weight around 3 lbs. I would consider a Lenovo C940 because I'd love pen support but really love being in MacOS. Which MacBook should I get? Thanks -- love the channel!

What do you think is better to upgrade when you go with the macbook pro 2020 base model...the RAM (to 16gb) or the ssd (to 512 gb)....(can‘t pay for both) I never had a laptop/desktop before so I‘m struggeling to decide. I need my macbook mostly for college (browsing, office tasks and and storing a few files) but I also want a future proof machine thats going to last me a long time and I might wanna start a little bit of video editing and create a few youtube videos myself (but that would just be as a hobby now and then for now). I mean ram is not upgradeable and there are tons of externals ssds but is 256gb really enough for my usage? And what are the limits for storage extension? Can I install programms on external harddrives and edit videos 100% of them? And what about MacOs updates? Will the old versions of MacOS be deleted after a main update or is that an extra few gigabytes every year ADDITIONAL to the space thats already taken up by the system? And is 16 gb of memory even that important to be futureproof? And last: do I have to worry about ARM Macbooks coming out soon and therefore a shorter lifetime for my Intel processor macbook due to a lack of support/updates for the old intel processors in a few years from now? I‘d love to get some advice here☺️ and sorry potential typos....I‘m from Germany so I‘m not a native speaker😂😅

Probably the best video I’ve watched on this subject. All in all, the MacBook Pro does the same as the Air, with the possibility for heavier, more substancial tasks. For this reason I think I’ll go for the Pro. Thanks

Thanks for the video Luke Would you say for web / mobile app development a pro is required or is the air enough power?

Thanks Luke!! Have watched so many of your videos recently, really adore them. Can you help me with this dilemma? Macbook Pro -$1200 vs Mac Mini - $1049 -I have all peripherals. Within the Mac Mini options, there's the $780 i3 vs the i5 w/512ssd OR i7 with 256?? Then get a ~$500 2017 macbook Air to kick around. I just ruined my 2nd mac air with water damage. I want to get into Final Cut, but maybe I won't like it. Would be nice to have the capacity, so maybe the i3 if I just want to put my feet in? Or should I future proof with the i5 or i7? The Mac Pro would technically be cheaper bc then I wouldn't have to get a kick around easy task laptop in addition. But I'm so afraid I will accidentally spill water on it.. Would appreciate any insight!!

I am happy with my 13" Lenovo Yoga 740. Saved myself a grip of money for the same things and I have a touch screen, a USB drive along with 2 USB C. finger print reader... as well as a metal chases and a better screen. That being said for me personally a Macbook Pro would do the job for me although the speaker thing is interesting.

Initially I had ordered a quadcore MacBook Air with 512GB of SSD. But then, Apple released the new MacBook Pro models. Plus, I watched more KZbin reviews. Well, I just changed my mind and my order to the 4-thunderbolt-ports version of the MacBook Pro 13"... and also 1TB of SSD. I am so looking forward to this new machine!

Could you please make a video on whether it is better to get a Hackintosh or a Mac Pro 2009/10 if you want a powerful, but also affordable and upgradeable macOS computer?

Thanks to Ahmed’s comment and this video, I will opt for the baseline mb pro and just upgrade the memory. It’s still not yet available where I am (Thailand). I am a science and match teacher, doing online lessons. Schools in my country won’t open until at least July. I finally felt it was time to upgrade from my 2007 MacBook. I was worried about the MBA i5 getting hot and I still need to make my lessons visually appealing. No michael bay type special effects, but something better than a talking clip art.

As a college student, what would you go for? I'm looking at the pro base model but upgrading to 16 GB ram. I'm also looking at the air base model but upgrading to 1.1 gz quad core and 16 GB ram. I've had a MacBook air since 2011 and now it's time for a new laptop but I can't really decide. Please let me know what you think!

Wow! You just made a perfect video por people who, like me, don't understand tech talk. Great work! I still have a doubt, though. I need to upgrade my MacBook Air (early 2014) and I though about just buying the new MacBook Air, but I edit 1080p video for KZbin once or twice a week. Would a MacBook Pro be a better choice for that reason? Thanks!

Very good comparison, thank you. What about combining a less powerful / expensive MacBook with a Mac Mini? For demanding tasks use the MacBook as an interface to the Mini with Luna Display or Sidecar. For lighter tasks and going out of the office, the power of the “lesser” MacBook would be enough. Also, while the Mini is doing a rendering job you can disconnect from it and use the MacBook for all the light tasks one also has to do (mailing, writing, planning, accounting, etc.).

I have a question! I'm not sure which MacBook to buy. I am currently a medical student, and I use OneNote A LOT. I'm probably going to wait on buying a new mac as my mid-2014 MacBook Pro-retina has been doing an excellent job. The only thing I notice is that it runs pretty hot during Zoom calls/when I run OneNote and have a few tabs open. So, since I use those applications, and OneNote on the daily, would it be better off for me to get a MacBook Pro? Thanks for your help!

I think the current 2020 Macbook Pro is more damage control than actually an update. Probably a big update coming this year where they won’t have to mention the keyboard change anymore.

MacBook Air seems pretty decent for that price, 1,299 I mean. I would use it for development, it should suit me just fine. No crazy gaming, nor video editing. Just text input. Nothing more. Furthermore, with corporate discount I can even max it out to 16 gb of RAM.
