I admire them in a weird way because I think this era of the Mac was the wake up call for Apple to abandon Intel since the balance between design and performance was no longer there like it was in the Unibody laptop era. The M1 Macbook Air and Pro are an amazing statement to end that era of design- as those designs used to constrain the usability, but Apple Silicon finally unleashed the performance users always wanted. Plus we still got good stuff out of this era like the amazing trackpad, touch bar if you were into that, and the improvement in USB C connectivity across the board.

Thin usually means it's garbage. There is no way they fit proper cooling or even hardware. And yes, for your 1000+ dollars, you got an i5 6360U, which unsurprisingly gets outperformed by a 2009 Core 2 Quad that's worth less than 10 bucks today, and this will cook itself because of the horrible cooling combined with a stupid fan curve. You get 8GB of DDR3 memory... yes, DDR3... in 2016, and that is soldered! You get that horrible keyboard, which even if it was reliable would still be horrible, and... you get a proprietary SSD, and it's only replaceable on the model without the Touch Bar... on the other one the SSD can't be replaced... and the Touch ID is paired to the logic board, so you can't swap it. The prices for more RAM or storage are also a blatant scam! Even if this was 100 dollars today, I would not buy it!

I prefer the fanless design of the MBA M1 to the 13” MBP M1 as the fan can get noisy at times, which is totally a non issue on the MBA M1, also using the laptop on the bed is much more efficient without a fan as with a fan there is also dust accumulation inside the MacBook as well as more heat generation as the MacBook’s only choice is to run the fan faster the more warmer it gets with time, for this reason the M1 MBA is a far better choice than the 13” MBP M1

I had a 2017 non-touch bar MacBook Pro, which I bought in September 2018 for uni. In March 2021 I upgraded to the M1 MBP because my 2017 laptop was unusable. The battery lasted 2 hours at best, it would freeze with just microsoft word open, zoom and other similar applications would constantly crash (which wasn't great for online school), and it would become so hot it could double up as a hot water bottle! My M1 MBP is still, a year later, miles better than my 2017 MBP ever was. I don't think I've heard the fans once on this laptop, yet that was an hourly occurrence before - I can't believe they were the same price when I bought them.

I still have and love my 2015 13" MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM/256GB SSD/512GB MicroSD Card. It's an i5 and it's not a custom build. I bought it from Apple directly 1 day before they ceased sale of them upon releasing the Touch Bar MacBook Pro. I read some horror stories then and certainly couldn't forego my USB-A ports for 4x USB-C. The Mac to this day works flawlessly, never have any system issues, battery is still awesome. The Mac is running on Catalina. I'm not going any higher. This software version may not be 100% perfect but I don't like the look of Big Sur or Monterey. The best MacOS IMO would be Snow Leopard. As for iPhones. I have pretty much every model from the 3GS and above. I have stopped at iPhone SE 2nd Gen. I am satisfied with it and it's Dual Line capabilities, battery life is good, camera does the job. Not interested in getting a phone that costs the same price as a computer!

The repair included full replacement of top case part of the body - including keyboard, speakers, unibody and all other things. The first thing was died left speaker. Then right speaker, then keyboard and then keyboard again. This is just 1st year. And this is just a Touch Bar model. As far as I knew at this point the models without touch bar were much more stable in that areas and many my friends didnt have any problems.

Sounds like a crack in the motherboard - bad ram trace. If you flex the chassis of the laptop when it’s working and it freezes, you’ll know you have a ram related problem. RAM is soldered - DOH!

I recently got rid of my 2017 13” Macbook Pro for the 2015 15” Pro. Such a difference! The 2017 one would sound like a jet engine even from just opening Spotify, the keyboard was an absolute mess with keys sticking down on the daily. Obviously with the 15” now being seven years old, it’s not the fastest thing in the world but man is far, far more reliable than the 2017 one. Hoping to get through university with this one and then maybe I’ll look into getting a Mac with Apple silicon…

Apologies if someone else already noticed this but Luke mentioned the m1 series dropping (at the time if the making of this video) down to the $500 range and BOOM he was right! They're dropping even more lately but personally I loved the a1708 model despite it not being far off from the a1706 he is has there. I'm not a fan of any touch bar macs honestly I've fixed them.

Hi Luke, I had a similar issue with a late 2013 retina MBP which would randomly freeze and then shut down. Sometimes it would turn back on, but mostly not. Turned out to be the AirPort card. I left it out by accident and the laptop worked perfectly (albeit without wi-fi or bluetooth). Bought another on eBay and it was fine.

With those model, the 2017 touchbar and non touch bar Mac, most of the time that "kind" of isues when it freezes and reboots, not turning on, recognizes then not charging battery, trackpad not cliking and I am sure at 90% it is the ISL9239 on the motherboard. I fixed one Mac with similar issue by changing the ISL9239, it is a BGA chip. It controls pretty much the main power line for the Mac. It could also be a sensor issue, around the ISL9239.

Sound like the kernel is corrupted or one of capacitors on the board is about to go out for good. I would format the computer completely and do a fresh internet recovery. If that doesn’t fix most of the issue it is a capacitor that is about to go out. Some of the issues you are explaining is because I did an Internet Recovery on a slow internet connection. Which in turn corrupted the kernel. I was about to sell my computer, before I figured it out. I had these issue on a 2020 MacBook Pro

I own this model of MacBook Pro without the touchbar and the upgraded Core i7 (i7 7660u, dual core 2.5 Ghz) as well as 16 GB RAM. I personally enjoy mine very much. I came from a Chromebook that wasn't even too bad, but this laptop is far superior. It definitely is not the best laptop in the world, or even close to being a great product from Apple, but mine gets the job done for me. This is my daily laptop, and it's used mostly for browsing the web, various research, occasional school work, and of course, watching loads of KZbin. For this light work the machine is a pleasure to use, especially coming from a Chromebook. My laptops are used leisurely, mostly for lying in bed watching KZbin videos or reading web articles. I do end up frequently having many tabs (15+) open and can still easly get around my browser. For me the light form factor of this laptop is great, sicne I don't do anything particularly intensive with it aside from basic multi tasking. This laptop still looks and feels quite premium, plus I feel MacOS is a good operating system for laptops. The butterfly keyboard does have its flaws and I will gladly acknowledge them. I'm a mechanical keyboard enthusiuast and daily-drive a keyboard I built Kailh Box Jade switches and occasionally type on my IBM Model M keyboard. I like a good sounding and very tactile keyboard, so in that regard I like these butterfly swithces, but again, they are flawed. A couple function keys ended up needing to be pressed harder in order to register. Apple Care covered a replacement keyboard, but it's unfortunate I had to get a replacement in the first place. As for the display, I like it. 13 inches is definitely smaller compared to my mid 2010 15 inch (Wonderful laptop and still very viable to use today), but for just basic binge watching of KZbin while lounging or in-bed the 13 inch form factor is great. This is a brilliant looking screen and is very sharp, as I would expect from an Apple laptop. As for display issues, this laptop was dropped at one point I believe and the display was slightly nicked on the bottom corner, which caused a little bit of a burnt orange tinge to appear where it tired to display black in that tiny color. That was covered under Apple Care and the display was replaced. Once again however, the display looks great. This comment has turned into more of a comprehensive review but I just thought I'd provide my thoughts. As a final note, this laptop was purchased by my grandpa but he never got use out of it and offered it to me. Had I had the money this would have cost at the time, it would have definitely gone elsewhere as a much more powerful laptop could have been had for the money, though I think it would have lacked the great look and form factor of this. It is definitely a flawed laptop in some ways, but other than the butterfly keyboard, and the display damage which was caused by the user (thanks to the external damage there), this laptop is good for me. Just for reference, I'm a KZbin content creator, as well as a PC gamer and somewhat of a power user. If I need to get serious work done, I'll go to my custom built PC with a Core i9 and RTX 3080ti. Thanks for reading this long comment that turned into more of a comprehensive review, and I hope I have provided some feedback as to this laptop and my personal thoughts on it.

I've had pretty much the exact same issues on the 2018 13" MacBook Pro. Crap keyboard, splotchy display, slow performance, insane heat, horrible battery life, random crashes and battery emptying overnight. Thankfully it's a work device, so it's not my money.

My Macbook Pro 2014 had a fault where the display would freeze randomly, over time it got to the point where it would freeze minutes after boot, however the sound still worked indicating that the computer had not actually crashed etc. I found that connecting an HDMI monitor would prevent this happening. Ended up selling it on eBay and the buyer was able to replace some display chip on it.

I bought a MacBook Pro 13-inch 2017 (with four Thunderbolt ports) in August 2017 (with 16 GB of RAM, and a 256 SSD), and have been using it six to twelve hours every day since. So over four years and a half of substantial usage. I have not faced any of the serious issues described in this video. Not saying it's perfect. I had to replace the keyboard, despite not having used it a lot. And it can indeed some times freeze for a brief period of time (depending on the app). It does not feel quick, for sure (using High Sierra, not the latest macOS, the performance might be better). But nothing that could prevent its very extensive use. Probably a bad unit / bad luck described in this video. The comparison (at 2:27) with 15-inch MacBook Pros might be somewhat unfair: these 15-inch laptops have more powerful CPUs (and dedicated GPUs that are vastly more powerful than integrated ones). It's Intel who is to blame for a lack of better performance gain between an 2015 i7 and a 2017 i5 (hence also Apple decision to move away from Intel).

They are called "Lemons" for a reason. The strangest one I had of all time was with a IBM PC XT. After moving every part one at a time from a know good system to the one that was brought in for repair. The parts from the unit brought in for repair tested with no errors in the know good system. The parts from the know good system would not pass tests when installed in the system that was brought in for repair. Only part that remained with the original system brought in for repair was the base case. Since the case does not have a part number had to call regional IBM parts manager and have him send us a case. Original parts from the unit brought in for repair when installed in the new case past all diagnostic test for 72 hours straight. IBM regional manager had us ship case to a person, and address he provided to me. Strange but true.

I’m still using my haunted mid 2010 17” MacBook Pro at work, yes it’s painfully slow to do something and yes it needs a new battery. But the haunting stopped when I disabled hibernate on power. It’s been working perfectly for a while now. I mainly use it to test networking, VLANs and tunnels of all kind like IPSEC, OpenVPN and WireGuard. So still after about 12 years it has a purpose 😀

When you said the value of the MacBook Pro M1 Pro dropping in value to 500, do you mean by or down to? I think they will hold their value considering Apple is not gonna be upgrading the chips yearly.

I agree 100% with you. My 2011 13" MBP was ok, but I wanted more battery life and also a bigger screen. So I got a 2015" 15" MBP with 2.8ghz quad-core i7 processor and 512gb SSD, which is a great machine (it even has a new battery changed by Apple) and it will last until the M1 MBP hit the used market for under $1000.

I had some weirdness like this on my 2015 MacBook Pro. Apple said it was the battery even though it didn't make sense logically. They replaced the battery and all issues went away. I think it is something about the voltage fluctuations from premature deterioration, not capacity. Give it a try! You can replace the battery. I have faith in you.

Problem is: Intel simply stopped working for Apple in that era, because they already KNEW what was around the corner... I bought a Second hand 2017 MacBook Pro, 15', 2TB SSD, 16Gb Ram, i7 upgraded, and I can state after 3 months it isn't just quite right... I mean, I checked every single part and apparently there are no problems whatsoever. Battery showed service and i managed to resurrected it form the death row... As a matter of fact it was just Half of his Life.. But...but I faced so many problems with the OS (Ventura, one of the worse MacOs I ever encountered, it's worse than Sierra, High sierra, El Capitan all together) than I can't even tell.... Connection Laggy, Audio Lags with a bunch of Plugins on a DAW, and List is so long I forgot everything. The only advantage is its speed and power....

@lukemiami You can't generalize, it could be that the MacBook Pro you bought was defective for some reason, I can't believe that what happened to you happens to all 2017 models, it's just bad luck, now, about the screen they lost the polarization If that's true, it's a pure shame.

Put the logic Board in the oven for some time - maybe there are some broken solder joints which only disturbing the device when the device is running or so. I don't know. ;) Or maybe the cooling is damaged so that it is running to hot and throtteling.

I am working now in a MacBook Pro Retina "mid-2014" and work fine... I will wait for the next M2 to change it... Oh, also I bought a screen protector in 2016, and still attached with a good color of the screen. I think that the new Apple silicon will not be repairable because the CPU, the RAM, the SSD, and the logic board are made together... But if they work so well as my iPod Touch second generation that still working and using all days... that will not be my concern.
