You might get a good score on the Apple Refurbished site. At least on Macs. Not mobile devices. Their stock changes daily/throughout the day, so sometimes you need good timing to get a deal. But I would absolutely stick to the most recent product releases -- so the previous generation at the oldest.

Brian Moyson didn’t say I was currently in the market for anything. Just that the lower spec/lower end of the price spectrum is so often neglected by reviewers in favour of the best of the best (and most expensive) options.
@richy2258

Jessica Wilson you mentioned interest in the lower end of the spectrum/good deals. That will apply whenever you want to buy something Apple. I didn’t mention anything about when to purchase, or anything current. The Apple refurb option is a good way to go past, present, and future. So it’s a helpful thing to know if you ever plan on buying a computer from Apple at any point for the rest of your life.

Dude... I am a decades long graphic designer... the thick bezel is a plus. It depends where you iMac is in your room/office or such. What area it is being used in with regards to lighting, natural light, sunlight, windows etc. I like natural light, so have mine against a window/sliding doors on the balcony that get good light, but not overwhelming/ As well I have an extra monitor. If the bezel is to thin... your own 'human' eyeballs cant see the colors correctly near the edge (if behind the iMac is brighter or different colors... books... lights, windows.... whatever... ) when using photoshop etc in almost full screen mode. SO people who don't do A LOT of design and art, color correction etc... the current bezel is great. it helps A LOT. I really enjoy your channel etc... but all you 'bezel is to thick' dudes... you need to take a step back and see the real world. Certainly are with you on the packaging and traveling with them etc. It is A1!! But yes... only 256 storage SSD... crazy. should be 1TB.That will cost apples a few dollars. Webcam... well.. yeah... better is good, my parents old. LOL.. Overall it is good. Has the 'apple tax' but the Apple OS and switching,g/copying, integration with iPhone, Ipad etc is WAY more than worth it, Apple.. Tim Cook... you can really afford to have minimus 512 or 1 TB storage.. 16GB memory. Make them the ultimate bang for the buck!

Luke, I wanted to thank you for actually reviewing a realistic review in the sense of I have finally had my eyes opened to the reality that many of these reviewers are just pumping up their numbers vs giving an honest review. The low end imac will be MORE than enough for almost everyone. In almost every review they order a 10 core and 16 gb of video ram. Good for them burnmost people will not and can not. The 1799 given the clock speeds is more than enough the 2299 model is way more than enough. That is a great machine for the price point.

soooo sick of hearing about bezels - i never see mine because they're dark and i'm watching the bright content on display. sure, more display in the same footprint due to elimination of the bezels would be nice - but aesthetically, i don't have a problem with the bezel.

A community group I'm with bought a 21.5-in base model iMac in late 2015 (although it's actually the 2013 specification model). The group (prior to Covid 19 shutdowns) met two days per week & 49 weeks per year. When not in use, that iMac is stored in its original box. It's getting a bit tatty now but is still usable.
@PeterEmery
@PeterEmery 5 ай бұрын
Update: in Sept 2020 the 21.5-in iMac was stolen in a break-in. COVID regulations at the time meant the venue was closed to outsiders such as our group, so as the IT "specialist" I had the clone and Time Machine backups at home. We needed a new computer, the insurance payout was new-for-old, so we upgraded to the very same spec of 27-in iMac that Luke mentions in this video. It's been really quite good, almost four years have elapsed since the robbery. In a couple of days the RAM will be upgraded from 8 GB to 24 GB.

I’ve always felt that the extra money for the Mac pays for itself in experience. As someone with vision loss, who has been using the Mac for nearly 20 years, back when I was in high school, my eMac was the very first computer to come with full screen magnification out of the box. At that time, Windows required third party software to get that functionality. It wasn’t until Windows 7 that Microsoft caught up.

Best Buy is clearing out all of these iMac’s this weekend. I bought one for $600 off. Added an additional 16GB ($50) and mounted an external 1TB drive. Honestly, I haven’t touched the M1’s since. There is something about the iMac’s 5k design that make them great. And for less than $1200 NEW, a no brainer for me. Apple’s new M1’s are great… but the iMac’s are more of a “complete” feel.

The hinge broke on my mid 2013 27" iMac and it appears they had an issue with them and extended the warranty to 5 years. I just got barely under that when mine broke. They secured the hinge with cheap plastic washers that break. I hope the new ones are better. Apple fixed it free and broke the display when they took it apart so they replaced my display free too. So I have a 6 year old iMac with a 1 year old display. I don't know if I will get one of these new intel ones or wait for the next gen. That 27" is damn heavy to travel with

At my most recent video-editing job, we were still using the original 5K Retina iMac. I think the iMacs are underrated. They're great for editing content. Don't let the title fool you. If you are coming from a 2015 or older imac even this base model is a huge upgrade. Best bet is the $2299 model. Apple surprisingly included the i7 processor. In recent years they offered two tier processors like i5 and i7 or i5 and i9. This year they have i5, i7 and i9.. I agree on this being the last intel and thick bezel 27'' imac but we will see how long is gonna take Apple silicon to outperform this intel and AMD specs. Great job on getting this imac sooner than the others Luke, cheers!

It's definitely a nice upgrade compared to the 2019 models. On the 2019 upper tier 27" model you got a 6 core (no hyper-threading) i5 CPU and had to pay an extra $400 to upgrade to the 8 core/16 thread i9 CPU. Now the lower and mid tier models both have 6 core/12 thread CPUs and the upper tier model includes the 8 core/16 thread already saving you the $400 upgrade cost that would have cost you last year to get the 8/16 CPU.

Thanks a lot for your video, Luke. I disagree with you only on one thing: I think now is the time to invest in the "latest" Intel-iMac. The reason is that we will see such expected Apple-Silicone-Macs only in two years, and no one can say that they will be much more powerful and better than the current models. I can even say more: we know well the history of new Apple products, and looking at it, I can definitely say that the first generation of Apple-Silicone-Macs will be worse than the current one, and it will have many childhood illnesses. However, the current generation now has the most powerful and most energy efficient hardware ever. And all issues on this chassis have already been resolved. So why should we wait for a new one from which we don't know what to expect, instead of buying the current one, which we all know well about?

I see this Mac as a great option, and the older design doesn't really bother me. It's an iconic design, and bezels and chin aside, the screen is the best in the business for Macs (aside from the Pro Display XDR). I'd probably step it up to the mid-tier base since I'd need a good amount of internal storage, and then maybe pick up one of Samsung's new T7 portable drives. Also, extra processing power is always nice.

Lawrence They are changing to a completely different ARM architecture that is NOT compatible with x86 Operating Systems or software. So, the answer is NO you will not be able to run windows using Parallels like you do today. I imagine someone MIGHT make an emulator for Windows, but that will be slow in performance. It’s also possible that Microsoft will create an ARM version of Windows...they have a mobile arm version but it’s junk. With Apple adopting ARM, others might. So in a nutshell you better keep your Intel Mac a while until this all plays out.

Luke, I’m in doubt. I need iMac for web design (no heavy 3D or video, just amateur or studying). I was choosing between i5 3.1 / i5 3.3. Since the 512 is better and there’s no way to upgrade internal storage - then OK, 3.3 works better. Next doubt: if CPU can be upgraded manually (or at the service company) than is it worth to pay for 5500 8gb? probably I’ll do some minor tasks on video editing (but not 4K) and basic 3D designs. However I’m sure I don’t need 5700 graphics. Definitely I’ll upgrade RAM manually to 64 gb. What would you recommend regarding i5 3.3 /5300 and i7 /5500? Currently I have iMac 27 2011 i7 with 32 RAM. But it’s not enough for my project. I heard that 2020 i5 is almost 2019 i7. Budget is limited. BTW in non US countries prices are different. A basic i5 3.3 costs $2,500 vs $2,000. For i5 3.1 $2150 vs $1,800. And i7 costs $3,100 vs $2,300 If I lived in US I’d definitely go with the basic i7 for $2,300.

Welp...it's mid summer 2022 now, and I just bought one of these this weekend. For being an old timer moving to an Apple desktop for the first time (major learning curve starts now) I like this new (old) product. Our local (BB) Big Box Store had two of these left and the price was right, considering it's 2022 and the dollar is worth pennies, this is a great buy, so easy set up, one cord until I added the ethernet (old guy distrust 'that through the air stuff') cable so now there three cords of the growing spaghetti farm (printer cable). But overall, I like it. Now where's the damn user manual?!!! As for the boxing...big companies save money on stuff that only gets thrown out...I thought it was just fine. I'll watch your other videos if I can figure out how to .....

I have never understood the point of those. Why buy a new screen every time you choose to upgrade your computer? If I am writing computer programs, CPU and disk matter, the screen very little. If I am editing photos and or video, shouldn't I get a good monitor for those tasks and keep it? I have monitors that are pushing 15 years old. They don't do Adobe RGB at all well, but their sRGB isn't too bad, and they're fine for many tasks. I have a BenQ monitor for photography, if I want something flashy, there's the new TV.

Moksh, if it does what you want it to do, great. I've got a mid-2011 21" iMac and it still works perfectly and, after adding more RAM than the 4GB originally fitted, actually better than ever. You have saved $200 that you didn't need to spend, if you look at it that way. I've recently bought a 2019 model iMac 27" with core i9 and 2TB SSD, knowing that a new model was on the way, which turns out to be a spec revision after all, but I don't care one way or another, because I am perfectly happy with this model and its performance, which is more than I'll probably ever need. I also know that its software will still work fine for another eight to ten years, if not longer. Luke is into sensationalising 'the next big thing' when it comes to new, rather than older products. It is 'consumerism' gone wild. The secret to happiness is to be content with what you have got and not to covet the next big thing unless it gives you a very real, not theoretical, advantage in some very significant way.

@@hedydd2 I know that, I am currently using the same 21.5 inch mid 2011 iMac. I am just saying that the base model is much worse value compared to the others and may get less number of software updates. This will lower it's resale value, therefore making it costlier in the long run.

I am considering getting the 2020 27”, solely because I can A) use an eGPU with it B) I can upgrade the RAM & C) they’re everywhere for less than $1200! The display is worth more than the retail price and I have an M1 Max. And I disagree with your point that you (I or anyone) can build a or buy a PC at a lesser price - even with the outdated hardware. I’m having a heck of a time finding a PC with Thunderbolt I/O - at ALL! A 5K display with native software support isn’t a possibility, and seemingly Apple doesn’t seem to be too concerned with building such a killer AIO using the M silicon. We’re still relegated to the basic (Air/13” MBP) M1 and with OWC, the chances of upgrading the internal SSD are very high. In my opinion, this is the best deal on the computer market bar none. Bootcamp still works for Windows partitions, a Linux distro and the current version of macOS. And I’m looking at the 5600/5700 GPUs with a core i7. Intel’s iterative updates since then are just that. Iterative. The 12xxxx/13xxxxx are much faster CPUs still saddled with the limitations of the infrastructure that comes with using a motherboard/logic board. If you’re not using the machine for super fast editing or encoding and exporting video - you can’t go wrong spending a thousand bucks in 2023 on such a killer display with a computer (that doesn’t suck) built in. A perfect family computer that’ll still last many years to come. I still have a 21.5” 2010 and a 2011 working model of each. While slow as molasses with 5400rpm internal storage - the SSD & upgraded (significantly) dGPUs in these make them a no brainer. My M1 Max is fast and reliable and constantly improving with the support of third party software and the support BUT without Intel, there’s still no real way to run Windows if need be unless it’s Windows ARM, presenting its own limitations. I’m looking at one on Woot, an Amazon sale aggregation app that has a 56/5700 GPU (I don’t remember which), 1TB SSD, & 8GB of RAM that’s easily upgraded. As well, the four Thunderbolt 3 ports allows for the expansion of whatever you need to expand externally… including NVMe storage that’s double the speed of the internal storage of the machine!!! I’m surprised they’re available all day for less than a third the price of my M1 MacBook Pro Max. Lastly the limitations of using multiple displays is gone in comparison with the M1 MacBook Air and 13” Pro or M1 iMacs. All of which are capable of running only a second display due to the inherent restrictions of the Apple silicon. TL/DR: in comparison with the current M2 silicon Mac’s in the same price range (all brand new including this one) - these are significantly better a deal for many if not most folks who need a desktop at home. Period. Just my humble opinion though as your mileage may vary. The external GPU via Thunderbolt is enough of a benefit to hit buy now. As well as the use of full blown Windows natively via BC or Parallels. And the display is unmatched at this price MINUS the display. You simply can’t buy a 5K display of this quality for less than $14-1600. And you can buy new 2020 27” models new in box for 20-30% less than that!!! Great video although dated - it still has all the benefits you outlined plus many more.

@richy2258
@richy2258 4 жыл бұрын
It doesn't sound like you do pro-level creative work on your machine. It'll keep you very happy. It'll be very quiet, and everyone who mentioned getting 10 gig ethernet is wrong. You can't saturate that much bandwidth, no matter how hard you try (unless you're moving around 8k projects back and forth on a server). The screen is alright/good. It's a reasonable combo. I would much rather go with a Mac Mini with an OLED screen, but I don't use a traditional setup of sitting at a desk. Also, don't get less than a 1 TB drive -- it's really not recommended. I'm assuming you have other Apple products. Videos and images are going to increase in size a lot over the next 3-5 years. The internal drive will work a lot faster than an external drive. If you do anything beyond browsing the internet and using basic productivity software (word, power point), then you'll be just fine. If you use Logic Pro X or even Garage Band, or do any video/picture editing, I would consider some different upgrade paths. If you just have basic uses, get the lowest processor, 16 gb of RAM, 1TB drive, 5500 8gb, 1/2.5 gig ethernet bing bang boom. That is the stock, comfortable setup for regular/moderate users. Any other upgrades give severely diminishing returns. Would not recommend going any lower on the RAM or graphics. You should also check the comparable builds in the Apple Refurb store, where availability and deals change throughout the course of the day.

I bought the high spec’d one with 2 upgrades; 10Gig ethernet and the top of the range graphics card. It’s not an upgrade, it’s replacing a 5 year old PC with a GTX980 and will be used as a production tool. I’m and editor and animator and need something that’ll playback 4K without transcoding and will connect to both my NAS via 10GigE. I’m unconvinced that Apple silicon will outdate this any time soon. But whatever - working mostly from home now and will be a huge leap from the mid 2015 15” Macbook Pro that I’m stuck on at home. And by the time you cost the display, this is the only Mac that makes economic sense to me.

I like the 4 x USB ports and the 1080p webcam. Wish I’d got the track pad but the mouse is ok. People complain about the charging port - but it lasts for ages - a month of ‘normal’ use between charges. Yes it will be out of date soon, but as long as Apple support their intel-based Macs for the foreseeable (my MacBook Pro is 7 years old), so I’d like the iMac to last that long ideally. Great review and refreshing that it was the affordable, base model.

Granted, those bezels are quite big for today's standards. But still, albeit not "the freshest", it has been and still is a beautiful machine! I came from a late 2015 27" iMac 5K which was FULLY LOADED at the time but was having some seriously fatal hardware issues. I've already done a few 1080 videos and the render time in Premiere Pro is pretty damn FAST considering what I was used to with the 2015 model. I am happy with the purchase knowing that I got a good reliable Intel chip which my software will happy integrate with. The big optimization for M-chipped programs will take a few years to catch up, but even then, the M-chipped Macs have serious shelf life as described by Louis Rossman in his video "The more things change, the more they stay the same" around the 4:30 mark. This new 2020 of mine should set me straight for at least 3-5 years god willing.
