Wow Luke, what can I say but thank you for taking me back to when I was a young boy living in Chicago at the time and this AMAZING SONG CREATED WITH THE VOICES FROM ACROSS THE GLOBE AND CROSSING EVERY GENRE did something that I had not experienced in my young life and had a profound impact on how I would live my life even today. In 1985, the World seemed so much bigger and what was happening in Africa was misunderstood by a lot of people in the US. I remember wondering why people would continue to live in a dessert where no food could grow and in my naivety wonder why they didn’t take their families to places where there were markers and restaurants😥. This song not only educated people across the World as to the reasons there was so much famine but they also brought news stories and personal stories of the actual people starving and put faces to the suffering and I knew from this time forward that I would live my life in a way where I was going to make a positive impact in someone’s life every single day (I still have that phrase on my bathroom mirror). There have always and will always be people in some part of the world who are suffering (currently it is the people of Ukraine) and since this moment in 1985, people have always come together in ways big and small to try to make this world a better place for you and me❤️❤️ I love ya man for bringing this moment in history that I am sure a lot have never seen and let’s all continue to follow its message as we travel through life..🙏🌈😇❤️

That song came together by happenstance. They heard what Quincy, Lionel and Michael were trying to do and there happened to be a music award ceremony that night and all those artists just showed up. It took them all night to record it.

Wonderful reaction Luke. I love the changes and surprise in your face recognizing certain stars and being impressed with their voices. This song is simply perfect in every single way, perfect harmony with so many different voices. This is what I loved about the 80’s, the stars used their celebrity to come together and do something good. Such a beautiful song! There is other song were many stars came together and raised money at the end of 1989. Check out “Band Aid” with “Do they know it’s Christmas “ It’s also a very beautiful and touching song. @@serixskylark You make a valid point - - except - - hmm, no. Today's music really does suck. Obviously, no decade of music is 100% great or 100% sucky but compared to every decade of music prior to this century, it rates very much bottom of the barrel in terms of beats, rhythm variations, instrumentation, melodically and lyrically interesting and original verses, catchy hooks, addictive choruses, singers who sound natural and unique, exceptional backup bands and showmanship - - this century's music 'scene' has been devoid of most of it. In addition to incredibly boring, I find much of today's music to be either very depressing or almost lecturing in some ways. But mostly depressing. There's a reason that when pop music is used in contemporary movies and TV commercials, it's almost exclusively music that dates from the 1980s or prior. It's also the reason that if you hear a compelling riff or sampling as part of a current composition, it is probably from a song that was a hit from the 'old' days. I'm not saying that there aren't talented vocalists and musicians around. There are even a couple of songs here and there that I think are pretty good. And yes, there's been crap or average music from way back. But my overall, albeit crass conclusion, is still..... today's music sucks. But that isn't a personal poke at you. Hope this helps to inform my opinion more. All the best.

@@jillk368 my point is that yes, there’s a huge saturation of “bad” music now, but some of that is only “bad” to the people who aren’t into it. There are plenty of people who do enjoy these styles of music, because it resonates with them in some way and makes them feel happy. I’m not into country, or folk, but I respect it for what it is and move on with my day. I don’t consider it “bad” because of that. Is there a lot of generic or bland songs nowadays? Yes, as that tends to happen in an ever-growing industry that starts to be come saturated as decades pass, but there’s plenty of songs I’d consider bland from previous generations as well, it’s just the fact that now, there’s more of them. It’s not indicative of the current state of music in any way, the industry has always had this side to it, and young people will very much disagree on their generation of music being called bad because it’s what we grew up on and enjoy. It’s alright for older people not to like new age music, just as it’s alright for younger people not to like older music. What people like is what they’re influenced by, or what they’ve grown with and discovered on their own, and that will never change. I say this as an 18 year old who likes songs from any language or decade, including the dreaded “bad music” from today’s times. Let’s face it, the world has moved onto something else, and it’s not bad, just different. I know plenty of songs that have interesting, catchy compositions or compelling lyrics from this past decade, and very ironically, most of it isn’t in English, almost like it’s the American music industry itself that feels so bland and uninspired now, rather than this generation of music as a whole. I don’t know though, those are just my thoughts as someone who grew up listening to 2000’s and 2010’s music and enjoy it very much. So yes, I think it’s a little unfair to say it sucks. Everyone has their own tastes, what’s bad to you is good to someone else, and that’s the beauty of disagreeing and having opinions. Respectfully, I just think it would be better to say “it’s not for me” rather than insulting what we grew up on or enjoy, y’know? Hope this helped you to understand my side a little better, unless I rambled again and it came out unintelligible, which can happen when I get passionate about something meaningful to me.

The other is that I would have a hard time arguing your point that prior generations of songwriters and performers haven't left much over in terms of newer artists being able to seem unique. However, there's always room for invention. I appreciate you informing me about foreign music. There, I am pretty much on the periphery. Though I'm familiar with some foreign songs, for the most part, my personal assessment of music through the decades is by and large informed by American and British catalogues. I love hearing that other music scenes in the world are being innovative. I might even poke around and check some of it out. BTW, as a former teacher I have to compliment you on what you wrote, as I am gen-ex through and through and tend to be a tough nut to crack, particularly on music. In fact, you prompted me to remember a unit I did with my middle schoolers, comparing rap from the 1990s/2000s to rap from the 70s/80s. It was actually an interesting lesson - - I'd totally forgotten about it. And while your thoughts are a bit stream of consciousness (as are pretty much everyone's on these threads, including mine), they made me think. It doesn't change my personal opinions, but it does open my mind a bit. Your 2nd paragraph had the most compelling arguments. In re: 'new age' though, that's a genre (or, probably more accurately a style) which has been around since about the 1960s. There's nothing new about new age. I think you probably mean 'new music'. In Norway we have a yearly donation event that engages the entire country. A new charitable organization gets around 20 million dollars every year, on a particular day. This year it was Doctors Without Borders. Perhaps it's because we're such a small country that we are able to gather round this common cause once a year, I don't know. The 80s was the decade that everyone donated to people in need and thought about others. Its too bad there is soo much greed now. Being a technician that repaired pool equipment and had to go to homes to do it there. After the jobs were done. I noticed one thing that stood out the most was that the people who had the least were the ones who were the biggest tippers and 95% of the very well off like had multi million dollar homes wanted things done for free and never tipped. So regular people have the biggest hearts it seemed. Great review

It musta been tough going thru the night after the American Music Awards for a 70+ yr old. The song and idea was Harry Belfonte's (back row next to Dan Ackroyd) idea he brought to Quincy.
