Lumbar epidural injections are performed for management of low back pain and leg pain, commonly referred to as sciatica. The spinal cord and the nerves have a covering called the dura. The space around the dura is called the epidural space.
The procedure is done under local anaesthetic. The doctor will initially numb the skin and deeper tissues with a numbing medicine. A special x-ray machine called a fluoroscope is then used to guide the needle accurately into the epidural space. A contrast medium may be injected to confirm the needle position. A mixture of local anaesthetic and steroid is then injected slowly into the epidural space.
The local anaesthetic can provide immediate pain relief but the steroid can take a few days to work. Pain relief from lumbar epidural injections can last several months though this may not always be the case.

Most women of childbearing age have had a spinal epidural during labor. It won't hurt any more than that. Besides if women had the first kid and men had the second there would be no third or forth.

I’ve done 2 rounds and the local anesthesia numbing injection feels like a quick pinch ,then the actual injections I didn’t feel at all!!! Overall works great and is 3-5 minutes tops.. what helped was that the nurse was talking to me and before I knew it everything was over..

Had mine today. Pain actually felt good as I’d been desperate to mess with that area I could’nt touch for 15 years. Probably just the local that was relieving. Who knows. I drive for a living and have been out of work for 2.5 months because my insurance took so long. We’ll see. I think this is just the first step to the inevitable surgery. My dad had a fusion done when he was 30. Guess I should have paid more attention in school… too late to get a job that is mind and not body related.

Had it done several times due to nerve pain from deteriorated disc in my back and prolonging surgery and it was just like a needle jabbing like a normal shot . Wasn't bad at all. Most of the shots I had no pressure but just one time I had some pressure after the injection. It went away quickly when I set up and moved. Ihave an excellent Dr. at the pain specialist clinic giving easy shots. They arent bad.

My doctor told its a 3 minute procedure i have not done it yet. A bit nervous my pain goes and comes but it when it comes i take medicine. That the e.r prescribed its awesome.

Hi I had my injection done last Thursday my pain is so much better I'm on an epileptic tablet called Gabapentine it's used for nerve pain and a pain tablet called ixprim I'm seeing my own doctor on Wednesday to see if I should stop the Gabapentine gradually I don't want to just stop taking it without advice I hope all goes well for you when you get your injection ❤❤

i got mine done today and it was the worst pain i ever felt in my entire life, the numbing injection didn’t do anything to numb the area. i felt the needle and all the pressure and i was crying and saying in excruciating pain that “i don’t want it anymore” several times. i got out of it having a panic attack it was the worst thing ive ever done. i went in with no pain and left with a pain level of 10. my leg and back is currently hurting me and my leg has been numb for a few hours. it feels like something is wrong

Same. I felt pressure in both legs when the injected and it also hurt me. I was crying and screaming for a second they did the procedure, he said it was normal. The only difference I seem so far is that I’m walking less with limp and when I walk I’m in less pain. But I’m still in pain probably more than before getting the epidural. 😭they said it takes a while for it to work. Praying it goes away 🙏🏽😭

I got 2 sets of them . The fun part is when you get the needle just a little too deep and it actually contacts the spinal cord !!!!! YIKES !!!! It's like hooking your spine to an extension cord and plugging it in.

If your back pain is serious you would try anything to get rid of it! I just got done with this procedure it wasn’t bad . Stop complaining it’s like a 2 pain level for the needles going in it’s bare able. I fell ok I just hope it works so I can get back to work . I will keep you updated 1o/31/22.

@@nathueil1 it worked great I was able to go back to work I still was taking medication ,gabapentin . Also Tylenol 3Codeine . I noticed I was taking less medication than before. So a win in my book . It did not last it wore off after about 4 months I had trigger point enjections last month that was more painful than the epidural. They used no numbing medicine it hurt like a bitch lol 😂 In the end I’m scheduled for another epidural this following week it helps but only last for a couple months it’s not long term

Had it done yesterday. There's a bit of pressure when the numbing meds are released but it's not pain and lasts about only 5 seconds. The relief is well worth it. Good luck

❤ My Dr asks me if I want injections every visit. All 4 so far. The meds work but I can’t sit upright for long. I have arthritis in my lower spine. I have my next appointment next week & I am thinking about getting the injection now. But I don’t want to have any side effects that will have me worse in a year or 2 than when I started. I am just worried. How is it working for you.

I have been getting them for 17 years. I couldnt stand straight or walk hardly. Sleep 2 -3 hours per night. Pain makes me nausea its so bad. I got mine this morning. I felt relief as soon as i was in the recovery room.pain gone by time i walked to my truck to leave. Its now been 15 hours. That spot deeeeeep in there you can never get to ease up is finally releived. Thank God for these injections

i'm waiting for my insurance to approved it, hopefully they approve it because my sciatica pain is very bad. If I feel immediate relief I am going to start doing inversion table with mt teeter inversion machine daily! That way my disc can heal. I tried doind it now but my pain gets worst! When I am sitting down or standing still is the worst pain ever!

It doesn't hurt at all.I had mine done in my neck A little pressure when they put the meds in other than that absolutely no pain. My doctor is awesome.

Had a 2nd one today; 1st was 5 years ago. 5 yrs ago it did nothing. Today, after getting the procedure done, I feel worse than what I was before I had it. Dr stuck me a few times to find a different location. I know these things can take days to kick in (so I read & what I’m told). I sure do hope it helps because I’m in more pain now than what I was. Had a double micro discectomy on my l4 & l5 almost 2 years ago. After recovering, I felt better & resumed employment. But after catching COVID-19 back in May, something happened & now I feel like I was before my spinal surgery. I can’t work & am on unpaid medical leave from my job past 4 months. Now the leave has been exhausted. I don’t know how much longer my job is going to wait on me? My orthopedic surgeon that did my spinal surgery 2 years ago thinks I may have re-herniated my discs. Possible surgery again likely. Awaiting MRI with his office. But my pain management Dr (different doctor), did this epidural injection. The way my back is, I don’t think I’ll be back to work any time soon & am financially hurting because of this 😩 I hope the best for others out there like me &/or that’s worse than me! This is such an emotional rollercoaster that you’re just forced to ride. I unfortunately have degenerative disc disease that runs on my fathers side of family & he had it really bad too. Was in bed all day everyday for the last 20 years of his life; he passed in 2015.. Had over a dozen back surgeries and none of them helped. Was on oxycontin 200mg per day for years & basically was a zombie the entire time but still was in pain. Good luck everyone with spinal issues! These are the worst!

Just got mine today. Still very sore after few hours obviously, nil bleeding. I’ll try to update for day 1, day 2, day 7, day 14, Week 4, and Week 12. Before surgery the back pain was sporadic but can get up to 6 out of 10. Had the injection. Pain wise 7/10 right after the procedure. Went down to 6/10 an hour after. Went down to 5/10 4 hours after, but tonight, it went up to almost 7-8/10 because I still feel like the needles are still being moved in and out (had bilateral injections).

People may don't know the pain and stiffness of lumbar that pain will be permanent according to the work you are doing. If you're in sitting position for more than four hours you can feel tha pain also I'm 23 years now. I had my lumbar injection at age 18

Girl same I have herniated disc L4 & L5 first time with this pain and is unbearable, I got my period which is heavy 😭😭 and in top of that I got vertigo for standing up so fast from the bed 😭😭 praying for everyone in here. I also took the epidural this Wednesday so far I’m still in pain probably more than when I got the shot

@@swtcookie21 well so far so good for me. The pain completely went away on my right side where I had it. The only thing sore now is my left back. They said it should go away in a week. I’ve been doing water aerobics since yesterday and that definitely helped. I will be doing back and leg strengthening five times out the week.

@@swtcookie21 yes I felt the fluid go all the way down my leg. But because the needle was a little bigger, that’s the only pain that I have now and waiting for that to go away now. It definitely has calmed down since yesterday so that’s a good sign. I’m definitely hoping I am that one in a million patient where everything works out.
