Thanks Gary. Love the Videos. I've also fallen in Love with Luminar. I was in the computer graphics end since 1988 when I built my first system and then started a Graphics company in 1991 so an old hack at at image manipulation and production. Since retiring I have taken up photography in a big way. in my 30 years of Graphics work I have not seen a product as revolutionary as Luminar since the first vectored paint programs of the early 90's. You sir are a master at both photography and Image processing. Love your work would have used you as a freelance in a heart beat. You have an amazing feel for the story. My mantra was always "Whats the story the image is telling. This product is beginning to replace photoshop in my play flows (I don't have work flows any more ..ha ha) Learning curve is all downhill. Keep up the Great work. Love the Videos.

I'm enjoying your videos. They're helpful and entertaining. Couldn't agree with you more on process. And the point of photography, for most of us, is representing an impression of a moment. It's personal. Enjoy it or move on, people. I often leave photos untouched. Sometimes I correct an exposure issue. And sometimes I want to do more. Each approach is valid, because it's a personal decision. And that's what art should be. Why that twists anyone's knickers is baffling to me. Thanks again. Good job. If I had to guess at the skies...I'd say photo 3, but only because of the expanse. I don't know, which says what needs to be said about that part of the program, at least for me.

Awesome vid Gary, and great rant at the end..Nice one... I was going to say image 2 as it appeared more surreal than the others but still all three look fabulous. I love skies aswell but being where we live at the foot of the pennines near manchester we get more dull flat dreary skies than ones worth a shout at.. BUT luminar as now allowed me to scratch through my collections of pics with dull skies and add a new dimension to them which for me is just fabulous. Im loving luminar and i actually enjoy editing my images with it as its so great to get the results we want without the headaches of going through a thousand layer edits.. Keep the vids coming buddy.. Love em.. Take care.

Hi Gary, I'm not sure if I have the quiz idea right: I opine image 2 had a sky replacement. I wonder if you will consider placing something in an object please, by another layer image on top and erasing everything but the replacement object and showing how to get it into scale with the original please. I have made a couple of tries without success, hence my plea for your expertise. Thanks for sharing and educating in such a pleasant way. Regards Jan.

Good video Gary. Always good to learn how people do their creative "thing". Not a clue about which has been replaced, feel it might be 3, but not sure. WRT editing, it seems odd to me that folk get upset with editing still images - but I've never heard anyone say the same about movies/videos. There you are cutting chunks out, reordering and creating and showing something that didn't actually happen, but that doesn't appear to be an issue. I suspect folk who get hot and bothered about editing also subscribe to the idea that only "real photographers" get it right in camera and "proper photographers" should only shoot raw files and only ever use manual settings. I'm old enough to recall hearing otherwise sane individuals saying that proper photographers shouldn't touch that digital stuff and photography should only involve film. Kodak died out because they had a particularly specific idea of what photography should be. Time showed them how wrong they were.
@GaryMcIntyrePhotographer5 жыл бұрын
Hi Martin, totally agree with your comment as most digital technology is a progression and folks should embrace it to see what new things can be created. Sometimes it is a form of escapism the same as movies. Image 2 replaced, totally bland sky which infact was a set up for a night astro shot.

Hi Gary, I quick question for you with regards to sky replacement and image size of sky. Is it best the replaced sky image size is close to or matches that of the image size you are working on. Only reason I ask is that with some images I use the replaced sky on screen appears fine and export ok. On others the replaced sky appears pixelated and noisy on screen which makes it quite hard to determine final image, but when exported is ok. It’s just when working on it. Any ideas or advise would be very much appreciated
@GaryMcIntyrePhotographer5 жыл бұрын
Hi, I find that the best skies are the ones shot on the same camera, yours I presume. When shooting fill the frame as best you can. I've found that when you mix different megapixels the results can vary. I have mixed mobile phone skies with camera and although it works you are aware of the megapixels. Hope that helps 😁👍👍

@rkic475 жыл бұрын
Thanks for all your videos. I can see that there is a problem with image manipulation where the result is is intended to be used for news reporting or advertising. Where the image is for personal use or even is for sale as an artwork I have no problem with post production changes. When I got my first slr more than 50 years ago we had to get things "right" in camera but then often spent a lot of time working on the image in the darkroom to achieve a more pleasing result. With digital technology I will happily use focus or exposure stacking to avoid the limitations caused by the optical or sensor performance of a camera and get an image that reflects the scene that I perceived at the time. I will remove minor distractions and adjust colours to get the result that I want and get rid of acne off a portrait. I'm not sure that I would replace a sky but I couldn't condemn someone for doing it given the changes that I would make. As long as there is no intention to claim that the image is "straight out of camera" there is no problem. The camera has always been capable of "lying" whether through staging, lighting, filtering or processing of the image and we should accept that the result is the reflection of the photographer's vision.
@GaryMcIntyrePhotographer5 жыл бұрын
Well said Robert and yes agreed there is no comparison to getting things right in camera but if you want to extend your artistic vision with post production techniques and don't make claims that its straight out of camera then why not it there art 😀👍👍

I'm going to say Image 1, the reason being the position of the sun and the hillside to the lhs above the snow line; you would expect to see at least a little bit of golden glow there. Affinity Photo does a great job of sky replacement but it requires refining with brushstrokes. Skylum have got this nailed. I got an offer of it for £80 that expires on 2 Dec...I'm hovering over the purchase selection. If you are flogging an image on Shutterstock and the sky gets more dosh then I'd say go for. I'm going to....If I buy it. (Probably will)

@@GaryMcIntyrePhotographerThank you for your reply Gary! No I haven't tried to contact Skylum to correct this problem! I don't own it, it's on trial! Since you seem to have close ties with them it would be better to hear it from you! I would suggest asking on your vlog to see how many others have experienced the same thing? For all the amazing things Luminar does, it still needs to work... everyday! Clearly it's not there yet. Once it's out, I will wait for the reviews from the masses and possibly revisit it again..

Well, isn't photography an art? If so, then, you should be allowed to be an artist. Believe me, I use Aurora HDR 2019 sometimes and some of my photos, after I am done editing, look like a painting. I don't do it a lot, but, when I do, I have my reasoning. I have tried the sky replacement feature and it has its place. I prefer to not have clear skies 75% of the time, so, I may replace it. None of my Photography Club members have a problem, nor have I heard any complaints from those who see my work online. So, be an artist!

It 'was' very obviously that one. But I thought it was far to obvious.....but it was ideal for the image.....

Hi Frank, yeah it was put in as a red herring for that reason. Thankyou, yes that sky was the best suited for the image😁👍👍

Image 3? I went to Glencoe last year for a few days. The scenery was amazing but the sky was awful. No clouds just blue skies. Gorgeous weather but not for photography. The images i took were sat on my hard-drive till Luminar4 came out, and now i have some amazing images thanks to Luminar. Photography is an art form and therefore subjective. They are my images so i will do with them as i please. Chill out Folks!

Exactly! and well said. Image 2 it was. Image 3 was photographed just for the sky as I was collecting skies for composites in case I got a day like you mentioned in Glencoe😀👍👍
