For anyone wondering: This open beta is still seemingly just for Apollo owners at this time. I’ve had a couple of helpful comments clarifying that they haven’t been able to get Luna working without having/owning an Apollo. Still a sick update and great to know what is just around the corner. Cheers mate! Generally speaking / if I fly through the process... Minimum of 2 days. Between setting up lighting (which most of the time I try to keep up now) Writing out a script so I don’t ramble ha Filming (its hard to talk to a camera) B-roll Editing Upload Then SEO’ing the video. Ha It’s just time consuming! But I love being able to help out and share info with the people who follow the channel - I’ve gotten to connect with a bunch of cool ass people. Cheers mate!

@@TheSteveKinney I might be interested in some one on one time at some point, only because I am a beginner and there is a lot of editing and engineering language about recording work flows, that I just don’t understand. I’m slowly learning how to use luna, and only because it came bundled with my Apollo interface when I purchased it. I’m just kinda stuck I’ve learned basics in recording tracks, but know nothings about doing a mix down? Or editing. I would love to learn some of the basics in doing that. I’m just a guitar player, and will use drum samples and keyboard samples via midi, just your typical bedroom setup. Thanks Darren

Eh. Kind of. You still initially need an Apollo to get a license of Luna. THEN you don’t need the Apollo. This is because it’s still in beta. Just public beta.

Core audio is great. I can now use my main interface (Titan) with my Twin. I can use my hardware 2500 by routing a mixbus through it. But without delayed compensation, I still need to track (through hardware) and do initial hardware processing in another daw.

Ugh - yeah that is one of the biggest requests since the initial release a few years ago.. no support yet. What I alway end up doing is bouncing down to wav file and then reimport as wav once I'm ready to actually mix. and other times, I'll simply add multiple instances of EZdrummer and mute channels within ez drummers mixer.

This is almost true. You still have to have a Apollo to check it out. If you don't have an Apollo, you can't get past the install process if there is not Apollo attached to your account. I hope this clears up any misconceptions for anyone that doesn't have an Apollo. From my understanding, they are working on a full Native version where you don't have to have an Apollo, it's just not there yet.

Ehhh. If I had to guess. It’s just an error. Literally in the video - I connect it to a computer without an Apollo ... but the install thing is true, I’ve heard other people say this. And also weird behavior Which is why I think it’s an error. If it’s in open beta - that means they want people to try it out.. and test. Why would they put that behind a paywall? Just my two cents. Once you install, it (UAD LUNA Software) checks your account online and if it doesnt see the Apollo, it tells you it (LUNA software) doesn't see an Apollo on your account and to check your account. This update is just for Apollo users to beta test for them. Like I mentioned before, I think they are working on a Native version only for everyone, but this isn't it. Of course, you can verify this with UAD if you'd like but this is also confirmed from UA rep on GS (Gearspace).

As of 08/23 Luna 1.4 still will not launch unless you have a registered UAD interface in your account, so it only supports core audio after you have purchased some UAD hardware *first*. Without a registered hardware product in your account LUNA will never get past the first launch. LUNA is not a general use DAW in any way at all, its an exclusive hardware-dependent application. Really sleazy the way UAD is dancing around this and using marketing speak to imply anyone can use LUNA. No...they can't. Only UAD hardware owners can.

I love your videos and have purchased from your online store and taken your advice re: best UAD plugins and their application in the studio. I have run into a problem with Luna that I've had a tough time finding on the internet. I purchased an NI keyboard in order to finish the last song for an upcoming film, The Lords of Cornhole. Sadly my Luna DAW doesn't recognize the keyboard correctly (knobs, colors) and I was wondering How do I configure the keyboard so that I can tap into all the great libraries with my s61 keyboard.

Hey steve, I really like your videos! I used to use logic and I’m making the switch to Luna. One key command I always used in logic was “repeat record” by using the Command R shortcut. Hey mate! Great question, short answer - not yet. However, the functionality already kind of works this way. I believe if you have a full-size apple keyboard Simply pressing space bar to stop the recording and then number 3 will restart the recording and if you have preroll turned on - it functions very similarly. Instead of a one button press. It’s two.

Yo Jay! Thanks for that! 1. Create a new bus 2. Send signal from source track to bus 3. Add the fx to the bus & put the effect value to 100% wet 4. Pull fader of the bus to desired level 5. Automate the send for just that section of the song. Hope this makes sense!

Talking like a speed demon usually doesn’t help. I see a lot of people on YT speak super fast. It’s actually the slower more deliberate delivery that helps people understand. Also - just start talking to a camera. It’s hard as shit at first but you get used to it. And that helps. Having talking points written out help too. Hopefully some of this is helpful! Cheers mate!

Yeah, great questions! So. 1. - nope. The console summing / emulations are Native CPU processes. No Apollo needed, just a license to the plugin. 2. You don’t need an Apollo at all - just a free account with UA. Cheers mate!

Yup! There a number of these kind of plugins that UA has developed. And even non/UA developers too. UA has an accelerated one based off the SPL vitalizer. It rocks pretty hard. But there are tons of great ones out there too. SSL has one now. Brainworks and plugin alliance has a ton. And it’s always possible to do this effect manually with flipping phase and sample delay. But ya. Make your life easy and look up SPL vitalizer!

My I/O lists Mon L and Mon R as Inputs also. How does that work. Also my Mac reads the date . I had LUNA pulled up and when it said it ,it showed on my LUNA meter on the right. And it didn't get picked up from my mic, my tube power supply was on but my mic is in a vocal booth ,so it didn't come through that. Is it supposed to show on my meter? Or is that routed wrong?

Watch my video on streaming with the Apollo to get a better idea of why you can put the monitor L&R as inputs. All I/o are digital destinations for the computer. Your systems audio directs to “mon L & R” via audio midi setup menu. Because of this - all system audio, notifications, Spotify etc - all travel down that feed. You can choose to make that path an input return inside of any daw. Useful for screen recordings etc. It’s just digital routing.

I really want to switch to Luna from Logic, but they need to fix the clunky comping issue before I even consider it. I love their GUIs for Ox Box and Console, and I think once they’ve got the functionality of Luna up to par it’ll be insanely awesome, but for now I’ll keep lurking and waiting for new updates.

Click on track and press E Press e again to return to original size. Love this feature personally. But it does take some time getting used too. There are also some great features about the auto sizing of the piano rolls content itself. But again frustrating if you’re not used to it. Once you understand it - it’s pretty fast to work with. But I hear ya! They should have options for sure!

Interesting. I got in on all the hype, believing that Luna was going fully native. 😅 Unfortunately I don't have an Apollo interface, so I guess it won't be able to get a trail of the DAW? Question: will I have to connect a UAD interface to the computer all the time, for it to work? As much as I want to like this DAW, it's not gonna happen, without being able to test it out first. Based on my previous experiences with UAD, I must say I'm a bit sceptical, with this marketing method still. A subscription model that includes Spark plugins and Luna would make sense. I'm working full time in Pro Tools and I can't make the transition based on reviews. I would have to have both rigs, testing them side by side. Mainly mixing and mastering, so not interesting in yet another interface. Not trying to sound harsh, sorry if it came out that way. I really like the idea and I am looking forward to seeing if UAD will come around some time, hopefully in the near future. Love the videos. Thanks again. 😃 Cheers.

The thing is - you don’t have to have an Apollo connect / you just have to have an Apollo to get a license.. .. 😐?? My actual response in an emoji ha. Sooo confused. Cause my computer literally straight up didn’t have anything connected to it while filming. But I already had a Luna license from having an active account via Apollo. Etc. But that said - Luna has taken a lot of PT’s shortcuts and a lot of inspiration from the best parts of it. But pro tools is the top dog and can’t be beat. Particularly for ACTUAL professional use. But for most people - particularly home studios - Luna is fantastic, quick, and inspirational to work IMHO. There are definitely some hills yet to climb since it’s still missing some features but generallly speaking - it’s aweeeesome to mix in. Particularly if you’re a big ITB mixer. Do I still need to be connected to an Apollo for the console emulations/summing ? Do I have to initially have an Apollo to get Luna and then use whatever interface ? Or can I just download it without ever using an Apollo ?

No Apollo needed at all Console emulation and summing is a native cpu process. You just need a license for it. However, The “accelerated real-time monitoring” is only available via Apollo. This is just their fancy term for DSP acceleration and it’s the traditional Apollo behavior. Hope that makes sense. Great questions. Cheers!

I still want multi channel outs from VSTs. This has been asked for millions of times, and still not available. Also, why can I still not choose the outputs from any available audio device connected to my Mac, and use them as the inputs for LUNA audio tracks. For example, Im using my Apollo as the main audio device for its DSP and audio out. But I want to be able to record the audio outputs from my Roland TD50x drum module (audio device) audio outs into LUNA onto separate audio tracks live.

Ugh! Yeah man. I feel the pain. I was a big voice in the UAD forums about the multi-out. I know it’s a big request. It must be hard to develop or something. And the second one - I’d bet that there are a lot of programs that don’t allow the outputs to be seen and it probably makes it difficult to be able to route them as software / but maybe this core audio thing changes it. Just remember that if it’s a physical device sending audio - and it’s outside of the software inputs and outputs - that it’s always just easier to connect it via XLR or TRS to the line inputs. I don’t even bother any other way.

The issue with uadx plugins is an issue. I want my api in usual place and master tape also in tape placement. Currently not possible as have to go in inserts. Prefer the workflow when it’s built in

I was excited a few years ago when UAD released LUNA. The thing is, LUNA is still so very far away with having the functionality of all other DAWs. For example, there is no multi outs for virtual instruments, there are no delay compensated hardware inserts, at all, there is no ARA2 integration, the midi editing is awful. Luna just isn't anywhere near being able to take on other DAWs that have, and have had, all the above functionality for years. And what's more, there's no confirmation that any of that stuff will ever be in LUNA, they just won't say! I tried turning off my Apollo's with the latest version of LUNA and running it under Core Audio. No dice, it's got to be connected and switched on. It doesn't work with an Apollo that's switched off. LUNA is great for what is is, but it's still only half baked and UAD doesn't move quickly or even give a roadmap or any indication, so you can't plan for the future, you don't really know what you're investing in. I've just moved to RME interfaces and will sell my Apollo X's, but I bought all the plugins. I can't use the DSP versions in Cubase 12, under silicon because UAD still, after all these many years are not VST 3, which has been the standard for so many years. There is no guarantee that LUNA will be properly Native anytime soon. The UAD native plugin list is never going to be comprehensive because most of the good stuff is developed by 3rd parties that already sell those plugins, so why would they allow UAD to compete with them on their own stuff? Have you seen how slow they are to release their plugins in native format? I'd be waiting 10 years at the current pace. As I said, a few years ago now, I was excited by LUNA and the potential, but after years of waiting for them to deliver the functionality for LUNA, they just haven't. I wouldn't advise anyone to look at using LUNA until it's at least capable of delivering the stuff we've all come to expect in DAWS, because they aren't cheap and they won't let you know what's in the pipeline, so you can't plan for the future.

Yes, I agree . I don’t think UADs heart is in LUNA. It’s ok for recording/ tracking (although, not 100% reliable/ stable enough for a commercial studio, I tried ). It’s great for mixing ITB if you don’t have any outboard gear and you’re ok with that, but editing audio and MIDI is feeble and frustrating and as for composing, it’s not great at all. It’s not a DAW. It’s got potential, but looking at the big holes missing in the app that you have mentioned and the amount of time they’ve had to fix them, it’s clear nothing is gonna happen. It’s no big problem, just use a proper DAW ;-)
