The guys over at Westech put the new Lunati Bootlegger Camshaft to the test with some amazing results.

I hit the thumbs down. No specs on anything, especially the cam, didn’t get to hear idle. Sounded like a sales pitch for the cam and springs rather than a dyno/review, which is the gist we are given beginning the video. He says it ran perfect... compared to what? If Barnett was right there are lots of cams with similar specs capable of much more power. So Lunati/ Holley decided to use the popularity of Westech/Steve Brûlé and Engine Masters to sell products? Bad form guys. Westech don’t taint your good reputation getting roped into this kind of false representation. This video was simply click bait to sell a product. I and multitudes more have no respect for that. I will continue to watch anything Westech or Motortrend but won’t ever click on a video with this guy again.

Well, it's a 383 with hydraulic roller, so that narrows it down to one of three options. I too wanted to know some more, and looking at dyno results, I do like that near flat torque curve between 3k and 5k. Some combos tend to be more peaky than not, so... I want that cam #. Did they test the 276/300, the 284/309, or the 292/317? I wouldn't say the video is false, but it just seems typical of Holley: they present about 90%, then pack it in and go home - seems to happen alot for products they didn't develop from ground up. Did they forget to look at the box, or is some lawyer at Lunati damaging sales by being a complete pinhead? When companies get together the first thing lawyers do is reach for a NDA [non-disclosure agreement]. That's fine for a starting point, but it should be reviewed by whoever is actually running the company as things move forward - amend things as needed so people can function and it doesn't nuke the purpose of meeting in the first place.

yeah the thing is i like the cam specs as it seems a no compromise with the 108* LSA and that should serve the 2.02" intake valve regardless of engine size, yet a 10.5:1 383 with AFR 195 heads and XR274 solid roller made 515HP@6000rpm, and 510TQ@4400rpm.its a street grind. however it did very well with lower compression, not as good heads, pistons down in the hole, power is balanced perfectly with 468 TQ and 440HP street hydraulic roller its really good, the power shape i would watch out for tires losing traction up in the midrange under WOT.This hydraulic roller cam with 10.5 compression and AFR 195cc heads would get close or as good than the XR274 that is a solid roller that is my opinion. This is a great cam.

i would pit this against a comp XR282HR or XR288HR hydraulic roller anyday because of the correct lobe separation for the valve sizing , ignoring other LSA factors. I like that in a street cam, especially a street roller cam that retro fits. My opinion , you can't go wrong with the specs i mean choose your durations for your compression and heads. these heads aren't even AFR and the power is FAT. this is a sign of great efficiency and good power pumping through. Your car will have a softer clipping exhaust note and woolier sound with the 108* LSA. Its awesome for street but watch the torque hump and upper rpm wheel or tire spin anything over 400 hp starts working against street tires we all know. Perfect short block? wow your pistons are like O.O25" down the hole, i can see it from here.

Looking at the torque and horsepower pecks you can say a standard 223 degree can with around .550 lift and with 440 ft lbs at 3000 rpm, 112 degree lobe centers ? Compression lookin at those pistons under a 64cc heads roughly 10:1 .....Lunati grinds a shit ton of duration into the exhaust side of their cams which is good for top end but that's not what you need on the street, makes nice dyno #"s tho.....
@flinch622 Жыл бұрын
Since you bring up exhaust... I would very much like to see what this [I think the *224HR] cam does ground single pattern. But... ramp might be a touch aggressive for exhaust service on the street, at 26 degrees [adv to 0.050"] - Lunati can advise better than I can, but I expect 1.6 rockers would be avoided . Assuming I am right about which of the 3 offerings is tested here, that would be 276 adv/224 @ 0.050". I like headers any car I can fit them in, and with a little light head work, the need to use duration to crutch for exhaust system handicaps becomes muted - the throat of most exhaust ports can be opened 2% with minimal problems. Btw, note all the bootlegger HR offerings are 108 lsa - I like carburetors, so its all good.
@SnakePliscan Жыл бұрын
@@flinch622 Yeah they are playing with 383 cubes here , + free flowing aftermarket heads with okay compression (a D-dish woulda been better), so you could expect some serious power capability. 12* of extra duration on the exhaust seems really excessive, i think torque peak could have been closer to 500 if they had of cut that extra exhaust duration in half. The ICL is 104* so they have ground in 2* advance to try and pick up bottom end. The philosophy at Lunati must be that once the piston has done the majority of it's work going down the bore now let's spend the rest of the time on scavenging ... i'm not sure that's helping bottom end or overall power. I would like to see BSFC #"s per horsepower to see if they are wasting fuel compared to a shorter exhaust duration cam ? My gut says i would never run this cam in any engine.

its a perfect cam for a no compromise street performing cam with the 108* Lobe Separation Angle with tight cam specs, there is not a better 'kind of cam' except for what matches your heads precisely with a little more with overlap to bring in more, this is this cam's formula, so do i recommend , Yes as long as the cam is durable and the roller lifters durable for daily driving, and the springs are the correct material in beehive mode, and as long as the valves are 2.02" or 2.05", 2.08" i would step down to 106* LSA and a smaller valve like 2" or 1.94" i would do 109* or 110* LSA. You could get comp cams XR282HR or XR288HR they are in the same league, like the voodoo line as well as the cams were all designed by ultradyne harold premiere cam designer of all modern cam efficiencies and success. The trick is how aggressive can you make a street lobe and still survive on the street for greater efficiency and fuel economy potential and power potential, these are all valued by us street machiners. If its a trailer Queen the only reason for using these type cams are durability over RACE only cams that won't last all that long. less aggressive lobes tend to last longer given similar material properties. with Xtreme energy, dual energy, powermax, voodoo, bootlegger, thumpR , these lines are cutting edge street technology, can't go wrong with these cams if you want a driver slash winner. If your looking for a track only winning car, these cams could be used depending what racing and competitive behaviors, however an all out high end race car is going to suffer from using these street friendly camshafts when the others are way up farther in the rpm band. These are not 8000+ rpm cams. But as a result of their fine balance are competitive in race applications with the compression range and rpm range they are in.
