Cal, you’ve kept me inspired through the long, cold, wet, grey days of winter 2023/4. I’m new to bass fishing and finally, last night, I caught a bass off the top on a surface lure. I’ve been a carp fisherman for over 30 years but nothing beats the sight of a bass chasing a lure just 10 yards from the shore. Nothing! Thanks for your great videos. MaS

Great vid as always cal, the format of your videos are excellent, the knowledge that you add into the footage is intriguing every time I'd love to see footage of when you DO get snagged, its definitely a part of fishing we all deal with, and it would be great to see how you approach getting out of snags. I do somewhat agree with the other comment about you throwing fish back. I think youre always spot on with fish welfare, and it might be because you tend to be on slippery rocks a lot of the time, but id prefer to see fish swim away than be lobbed back in. Great footage as always!!

Thank you mate, I appreciate the comment! I’m not out to make the most technical fishing videos on KZbin. I just vlog a few of my sessions. It’s pretty basic really. As far as snags go.. my go to is to tighten the drag, lift the rod into the snag and flick the bail arm over. Applying this pressure on the lure, then flicking the bail arm over can ping the lure out of a lot of snags. It all depends on what you’re snagged on. Thick kelp can be a nightmare because when you’re snagged up in lighter weed, you can sometimes ‘tear’ the lure out. If it’s a rock, sometimes you can just let some line out and wait for the tide so wash the lure out the snag. This is the reason I don’t use braid under 20lb. I want the strength to pull out of snags. Some you win, some you lose 😂 that’s just how it goes sometimes. I could’ve been more respectful when releasing those fish yes. As I’ve said in a previous comment, it always feels more subtle when doing it, then watching back on camera. Hope that helps and thanks for checking out the video mate 👍🏼

Sorry to hear that mate. We’re very lucky over here because the water clarity is very good all year round. That’s the advantage of being on a small island. The tides rip yeah, keeps you on your toes that’s for sure. Cheers 👍🏼

We’ve all been there mate! The gloves aren’t a fishing brand. I bought them from a local DIY store about 2 years ago. They’ve outlasted any expensive fishing branded gloves I’ve used.

It may have looked casual but it seems to me the second fish was purposefully tossed out to a kelp free patch slightly further out off the rocks and both fish were returned head first to give them an injection of oxygen through their gills. I’ve watched Cal for a long time, he’s always big on fish welfare.

That’s a fair comment mate and I’ll take it on board. To be completely honest with you, whenever I do that, it feels very subtle and looks worse on camera. Bass are hardy fish and each of those were hooked through the lip. I totally get what you’re saying though. One of the comments below hits the nail on the head, close in was full of thick kelp so I went for a gentle lob. Not the best I know so next time I’ll be more careful. It was only because they were small fish and I believe they can handle it. You can’t please everyone.
