Gorgeous arrangement. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe I also noticed an amazing circular breathing technique on flute. Very very difficult to do! Bravo!

We played this for a winter concert last year and I had the high G in the beginning on oboe and I don’t think I’ve ever worked so hard on such an easy note, I swear!

Great job and arrangement. I loved that you used alto flute. This is a perfect example of why it needs to be be more prevalent in wind band music

an underrated arrangement of a 21st century classic. thanks so much for creating this version for woodwinds and the performance!

Absolutely beautiful. I'm a part of a High School wind ensemble and we played this. But this absolutely blew me away. Have you ever considered investing in a bassoon? Its a beautiful instrument to be added into any woodwind piece.
@JoshPlotner8 жыл бұрын
I agree, but they're so expensive! Unfortunately I've spent pretty much all my money on instruments (haha if that wasn't obvious), and it's hard to justify buying a bassoon at this point in time.

Yeah they are. And its very hard to master, even with six years of playing under me I still struggle with some things.

Great Videos. Can you make something about your practice routine.I am a saxophonist and I am getting a hard time adding the flute, quena and clarinet to the routine.
@ethancarns31397 жыл бұрын
I've played this in the high school band I am a part of (I play clarinet) and that was gorgeous. Was that circle breathing I spotted at the end during the long note? My part had that note when we played it but there were two of us so we just alternated who breathed so the note continued to be played.

This is gorgeous. I love Whitacre's work and have loved this piece for a long time. I'm a high school band director with a tiny Wind Ensemble this year. We are working all remote (not in person) and I wanted to have them learn and record this piece. However, this year I only have 10 students in my ensemble (flutes, clarinets, alto sax, trumpet, trombone, percussion and my main instruments are tenor and soprano saxophone). I was thinking to arrange the piece for this instrumentation and I was looking for inspiration and found your video. Have you published this arrangement or are are you selling it? I'd be curious. It's not my exact instrumentation, but if I were able to buy the .mus file and then just change out parts, that could be worth it.

Wow. This is gorgeous! I saw your other comments about not having money to spend on other instrument suggestions, but I was curious if you have at least gotten to play some other before. I was thinking specifically about Other types of clarinets since I only see the Bb and bass in your videos. In high school I got the opportunity to play contra-alto and contra-bass clarinets, and a friend of mine got to play the Eb clarinet. It's so cute because it looks almost just like a Bb but much smaller.
@JoshPlotner7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I've definitely played many other clarinets! But once you get out of school there's almost no call for them unfortunately. I've been asked to play things like Indian flute far more than Eb, alto, or contrabass!

I love the blend of sounds throughout this entire performance. Also, I was wondering how you kept the time consistent across the different recordings?

Gorgeous! Forgive my ignorance (I'm a brass player that does not know much about woodwinds), but your use of the wooden flutes (bansuri)? was perfect--really made the arrangement, I think!
@JoshPlotner8 жыл бұрын
No ignorance to forgive! You're exactly right; they're bansuris. And thanks for the kind words. I was excited to find an excuse to record them. I'm glad it worked out well!

Beautiful! Do you play with a tuner or something to keep the intonation consistent between the instruments? Because it's basically perfect and I find that very impressive. :P
@clarkaboud56178 жыл бұрын
Damn, that's lovely! Going clickless really paid off! What reverb are you using? Sounds especially nice around the beginning, where it's softly tailing out.
@JoshPlotner8 жыл бұрын
I used Logic's "Church Balcony" reverb. Thought it seemed appropriate for this kind of music.

How difficult is it to have consistent tempo changes? It seems like that would be maddening for those of us whose middle name is Rubato.
@JoshPlotner8 жыл бұрын
I used Eric Whitacre's conductor video to sync everything up perfectly. Definitely a trick I will be using in the future!
@jemiller2268 жыл бұрын
***** Oh, right, this was one of the Virtual Choir pieces. I suppose if there was no existing video, it would be easy enough to record yourself conducting it and play to that. Cool thinking.
@JoshPlotner8 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I'm hoping to be able to afford a big monitor one of these days that I can just put in front my recording station. Also helps a ton to be able to watch the waveforms as you're recording and trying to line things up.

Beautiful arrangement and sound. Only one suggestion: can you not look in the camera? At least some of you, the ones who are playing not a lead line. Half of a dozen Josh Plotners staring at me while I'm trying to concentrate on music is kinda creepy.
@JoshPlotner8 жыл бұрын
Hmm I'll definitely take that into account. You wouldn't happen to know of any other multitrack videos like this that use other angles would you? I feel like I've only seen these done successfully where every shot is head-on facing the camera.
@yaroslavv.7288 жыл бұрын
I've seen other multitrack videos but the instruments were different: guitars, drums, keys. It had multiple perspectives on the instruments, like a cam on the guitar headstock, closeup on the hands etc. I can't recall a particular video though :/
@JoshPlotner8 жыл бұрын
Oohh yeah I know what you're talking about. Hmm... I'll definitely think about playing with camera angles for my next video. Thanks for the suggestion!
