Not even that. They did not actually teach them, they set them up. Courses like that are not uncommon in Germany, though they are gender neutral and more about general etiquette for people that were not born into the higher class but have to navigate these events. And no teacher worth their money would ever set their students up like that, they would allways get a make over and a briefing befor an event that is ment to test or teach them. This show is not about actually teaching... its about setting them up in scenarios with rules they do not know.

Yes! I’m not super super knowledgeable re: linguistics (or rather, not formally educated), but the history of British RP/“proper English” as mandated by the BBC and all of that… unbelievably abhorrent and absolutely a form of classism, racism, and genocide. What you said was absolutely correct. I remember this show coming out in Australia and thinking 'if the lads are so bad, why isn't there a show to domesticate them?' And my naive butt was actually waiting for that as a follow up show because of how much tv was just all reality bs.

48:30 "she made no effort to participate in the class, she didn't ask any questions". I really hate the implication that not asking questions means you're uninterested. Maybe she just understood everything and had nothing to ask. This lady was just looking for anything at all.

When I finally had the courage to get tattoos that it became difficult to impossible to consistently hide, it was empowering. It was like I was truly accepting myself, because I could not longer hide myself from the world. People would notice, some people would judge, and that was ok. I could live with that, and I could be happy and myself.

@@rebeccafitzgerald2817 honestly, same in the US. If it's not to the point that you can't hold a job, then it's not often recognized as problematic drinking, even if you feel the NEED to go out every weekend plus several times per week, or can only have fun/feel normal with a drink in hand. And for sober people, it can be very difficult to go out without everyone trying to shove drinks down you the whole time. Practically have to shove an AA chip in their face for anyone to take your sobriety seriously, and even then some people will inevitably be like "What?? You weren't an alcoholic, you just went out a lot, you were just fun before!"

I think that was hyped language for voice over. Her charge was when overseas on holiday, but she got out of that. Could she still have been 'encouraged' by family onto the show? Maybe. But not because of a court sentence etc

I feel like the judging ladies have some sort of unresolved trauma (being excluded from friend groups, being classified as old-fashioned, bullied, disappointing in their parents' eyes) that they gain the feeling of control over by controlling the ladettes. I loved the team spirit of the ladettes and how comfortable they were in their own skin. Only thing that should be addressed is the alcohol consumption but let's be honest: this is cultural. Alcoholism isn't taken seriously, so people don't get help
@Vermilionchrome Жыл бұрын
This is gonna be a long one. The tutors are rigging the "education" so they're immediately setting some girls up for failure, whether this is simply production or genuine part of the education process, they've already determined that people are inclined to mess it up and not be to the standards they want them to be because planting "too revealing" clothes and then making the girls pick out their own outfits was pure shade. The Collective punishment because of one girls behaviour by banning cigarettes without any form of alternative was incredibly damaging. It seems that everything that is being done to these girls is deliberately trying to catch them out instead of being reasonably inclined and adaptive as education should be, you want your success rates of education to be as high as possible to be reflective of the fact that your teaching methods are impactful and successful to all under it. Rigging things and then giving them alcohol, knowing full well how they can be when alcohol is involved is just fueling the fact that this is not actually about helping people but to exploit. "Feminism" being used in a negative way towards that one girl was incredibly uncomfortable; "oh, she wants equal rights for women? WELL, SHES SCUM!" Is how it comes across. It sounds like it was very much rather a class terminology rather than political. The whole aspect of the show gives off Poverty Porn vibes

I’ve not finished the video yet, but I wanted to say thank you right away, for sharing about the culture of binge drinking in the UK, and your personal experiences with it. I’m from Wisconsin, in the US, and we are by far the state with the highest rates of heavy/binge drinkers, in the country. I have been sober for 1 1/2 years, but I spent several years using binge drinking to cope with anxiety/depression/a chronic illness diagnosis, that culminated in a very serious suicide attempt, which I somehow survived, and been putting in the emotional work since, to work on addressing my emotions in the moment, and not stuffing them down, until I would’ve otherwise had a breakdown, and gone on a days-to-weeks long binge. Thank you again for your content!

I was a bit of a ladette in the 90s, not a complete yob but certainly included binge drinking, swearing like a sailor and generally acting the fool, in fact I was quite well behaved in comparison to most of these ladies, but can I just say it was a blast and I look back fondly at my fun years, I'm now 49 and barely drink and hardly ever go out. I would have been awful on a show like this, not because I couldn't do the challenges but because I couldn't stomach the B.S.

They put the dresses there for them like they have been approved. No one would fathom that some of the dresses were inappropriate. That set them up to fail from the start. That's dirty. They are treating them like children or of low intelligence. Withdrawal from nicotine will really change their behavior as well. They are grown but they act like they've refused a naughty child dessert for the week.

I’m say glad you pointed out the exact thought I was thinking(kind of)… So these young ladies are gonna be judged and taught be act/appear like a “Lady” by the help/servants?! And it’s also so odd of them looking down on them, probably the same way the real society ladies/heads of the house look down on them as the servants! I don’t see any lady quality in them walking around in their Mrs. Doubtfire getups. 🤷🏻♂️

There are fascinating stories of how 'the servants' - at least the senior ones like butler and housekeeper - could total control a 'young wife' . There were no secrets between upstairs and downstairs, the servants were the shadows in any room or outside any door. The man of the house got to go out to work but the wife could be stuck at home with servants that looked down and judged her, even though she was officially in charge of them. Especially a risk when arriving into a well established household team (we served Mr X's father and his father before him etc) The teachers at these sorts of finishing schools would have been single (maybe widows?) but not currently married, and so yes would fit the old maid/spinster idea. I am reminded of the Aunts in Handmaids Tale - expected to make younger, prettier, women to submit to a system, whilst being outside of that system themselves.

In addition to a lot of people not getting to choose their job, people can also like their working class careers. Installing boilers is a useful profession, there’s steady work, you’re not just sitting at a desk all day, and you don’t have to take work home with you. Honestly it sounds pretty decent as far as jobs go.
