Once upon a time we could count of the phrase “ You get what you pay for!” Meaning if you pay a good price then it’s because the quality is there and it could last you a lifetime, and the same applied in other direction-if it’s a cheap price then it may fall apart. Sadly, these days price /quality means nothing. And the phrase, “They don’t make things like they used to!” is true now more than ever, sadly. 😔

As someone who works in a luxury department store on the shoes department, the amount of faulty returns of designer shoes has definitely increased and so have the prices. Every week i have crates full of shoes to write off, prada, gucci, balenciaga etc. Hope the return process goes smoothly for you!

Wow! That makes me sad to read but thank you for letting me know and for sharing the information us. This seems to be a big issue for what it seems all luxury brands at the moment. So the price increases are maybe also done to compensate for all the loss due to returns which are due to low quality standards.

This is poor design. You can see that the platform extends too far back into where the shoe would need to naturally bend for the person to walk. Since the sole is so thick there's no give, the shoe needs to "bend" somewhere, hence the sole just detaching in order to accommodate the flexion. These shoes are not wearable, unless you walk like Herman Munster (throwback for us old people).

Totally agree. I think I'm done with luxury brands. Although I am not sure where to go next as I don't like fast fashion. I've been trying to buy a bag for my special big birthday this year since September last year. I think I've returned five or six bags in total due to quality issues, all from luxury brands. I gave up and I've decided instead to treat myself to Hermes sneakers, hoping that at least these would be tip top quality. Guess what? I'm in the process of returning these. Worse quality than my cheap Adidas sneakers - glue all over, off stitching etc. Looks like everyone tries to cut corners on quality but at the same time milk as much profit from us as possible. Consider taking the shoe to a cobbler to see if they can repair it. They also may be able to give you a straight answer whether the shoe is just garbage or it's a defect in an ordinarily good shoe and worth the cost/effort to repair. When buying luxury, it seems wise to keep all receipts - you never know when you'll need to show proof of purchase if you need a repair or refund several years forward

Luxury has definitely changed. Small brands owned by regular people now have access to “made in Italy” leather bags now for much cheaper and better quality. Unless there is some special untouched by human hands kind of material out there…. It’s no longer special/exclusive. I’ve been in love with Tory Burch and Demellier lately. No looking back. The Eleanor bags by Tory Burch with the big medallion are Chef’s Kiss.

I had to return a Tory Burch bag last year (a Mellier mini) after using it for a handful of times. The chain handle got detached. It was joined to the bag by a tiny thin nail. It’s a shame because I loved the bag and it was as a good price point, but didn’t want a replacement as I’m sure it would happen again. I’ve just bought an Eleanor in velvet, hoping I’m luckier this time.

The best value is found in up and coming brands that are midrange ($85-500) where they invest in craftsman ship because they’re still trying to impress buyers. Some houses are resting on their laurels because they save on not having to produce quality since the name sells

Oh dear … that doesn’t look good. Let’s just quote Vivienne here: “Buy less, choose well, make it last.” I guess we forgot the first and third rule, but if it doesn’t last we might not have chosen well. It certainly makes it unlikely to go for brands that just don’t last.

I did buy less. Bought two leather boots in the last eight years or so. Choose well depends on standards. I did choose well as far as aesthetic goes. Willam has had this exact issue with Versace heels lately. multiple pairs that break right around there, almost like something shatters. I think you're right in that these brands just aren't testing these shapes on real people, but I also think quality standards have dropped off overall. I wonder if it's because these are mass produced, whereas back in the day when everything was either full bespoke or made to measure, there was intrinsically more accountability in the process because the designer and maker were working more directly with the final wearer. I'm almost at a point where I only want to buy thrifted/vintage/etc anything, because that weeds out the stuff that falls apart the first time you wash it.
@kaunas88

These expensive brands have realized a few years ago that they can cut the quality and increase the price, and their customers will buy even more, because the typical buyer of these items does not care about quality but only the perceived status of the logo, and the more expensive the brand the better. So, we get very high prices with mediocre quality, and they are laughing all the way to the bank, because of shallow status seeking buyers with more money than sense.
@kaunas88

The front part of the sole is very rigid, while the arch part is thin and delicate. This puts enormous tension of the arch of the sole. This is a case of looks over good engineering and combined with poor quality this is the result.

I think you hit the nail on the head re shoes: there is a certain level of construction needed to make the shoe serve its purpose. If it can't be worn then its totally style over function at unfortunately your expense. A lot of designer shoe brands don't have the same level of expertise lavished on them that classic or heritage brand shoes might have. Get a refund! All you did was do what you were supposed to do with them - wear them - they failed in their primary purpose good luck

Anyone with a little knowledge of the high fashion world is completely aware that the whole "luxury" system is a complete scam. We all know these absurdly high prices charged for items (most of them outsourced in countries with extremely low labour cost such as India, Moldavia, Portugal) just contribute to insane wages and salaries for a very strict group of people: creative directors and first line of senior designers / assistants, PRs, execs and suits, celebs relations and such. Not to mention the whole fashion editors pack: stylists, editors in chief. High fashion is literally exploiting rich people dumbness and naiveness who think they are purchasing something exclusive and manufactured with the highest quality standards, while the reality is the complete opposite. I portraited a kinda dramatized situation, but we all aware that most of the 10k from a CHANEL timeless classic goes right into Virginie Viard's and the Wertheimer's bros pockets 😅

It is called QVE: Quality Value Engineering. In plain English it is twisted into a cost cutting strategy. They are trying to make these as cheap as possible. However, luxury items are supposed to be made with the priority to quality design, durability, and cost being the least factor. After all, these are the factors that separate luxury from mainstream consumer goods. You don't suppose these products are targeted to the main stream consumer to fulfill the consumer need for PERCEPTION of wealth instead of the elite consumer who truly knows quality and elegance. Folks, you are being played. Truly wealthy people do not have a need to impress. True luxury is understated! Get your money back and quit buying overpriced consumer goods that the truly wealthy would embarrassed to be seen wearing.

Luxury has given up on quality for quantity. Impossible to keep up quality when the demand for luxury goods is so big…linking to your psychological influences of luxury brands on customers, great video by the way. Also makes us wonder, what kind of impact has this poor quality on the environment?

Omg, can't believe what happened to your shoes. Just ridiculous for the price you paid. 😢 Dacob, it's not a design issue but cheap production. I've been wearing cowboy boots and Chelsea boots for years and my old pairs are still perfect but the ones I bought in recent years either are breaking or broke already. I will also advise you to contact the shop if your shoes are no older than 12 months, you have a right to complain. I had a similar issue with similar boots after two wears only. I've contacted the shop and they refunded me the money.

So sad to hear that.. I saw, how exited you were, when you got them 😢 Since that I'm hunting them down..😅 Got similar once at Asos (not the cheapest one, but faaar away from Rick Owens price..) worn them in rain, enjoyed them, destroying my feets, because of the heel I'm not used to.. But they keep intact, the leather got buttery smooth.. and I love them.. so sad that fast fashion brand can do better than a luxury brand 😢 For me it all depends if the wil react appropriately and exchange or refund.. even I know refund is not making one happy..😢

I have a pair of Prada lace up leather loafers that I love. One day walking in them - they were new - I tripped and almost fell down. I thought the cobble stones caused me to trip. Took one look down and saw the soles of the shoes had started to separate from the leather part 😱Took them to Prada for repair.... they GLUED the bottoms and gave them back to me .... I could have done that myself. Totally shoddy of them Also had many problems with Gucci bags and the paint coming off the bamboo handles after 1-2 uses or the color of the leather turning an odd hue on wallets / bags .... But Gucci always replaced or gave store credit for the faulty items.... But yeah luxury is not what it used to be....or else how would the monster companies that own them make a profit for their shareholders?

You should be able to walk in shoes!! Including bending your foot- that is a shoe function- to allow regular basic walking. That is not a super high platform or crazy shoe design- it is a beautiful design it should be an elevated basic shoe. Cant wait to see if they do anything…WOW

This is pretty alarming Dacob, Rick is a brand I've always found to be nigh indestructible in the past. I have a few pieces from Rick that are over a decade old and still in pristine condition, I'm very sorry this happened to your boots. If we can't rely on a luxury brand like Rick Owens to still maintain their quality, who can we?

God this is just so sad. Just seeing this and all the stuff with Chanel makes me so sad. Dacob, have you done a video on brands that you still think are worth it? I'm a huge Loewe fan and I feel like their products are excellent quality for the price. I'd love to see your opinions on what brands are still doing a good job. Feel free to ignore me if you've already done this video, I just didn't see it when I looked through your history. Thank you!

Dacob those boots are so gorgeous, sorry to see they’re poorly constructed and sorry to hear that they were uncomfortable/unwearable til they lasted. I love shoes and been through this a lot with many many brands. Anyhow one manufacturer has never disappointed me and that is Rodolfo Zengarini, they manufacture a large number of designer shoes under licenses including John Galliano and Roberto Cavalli just to name a couple of their brands, never a blister, never a quality problem AND most of their products are repairable so they last years and years, i usually get them at Neiman’s or Saks. NOT A PAID ENDORSEMENT 😂 just a happy customer of decades. Gucci and Dior shoes been holding up for me as well but of course being selective on sourcing your footwear also often comes with compromises, but I’m no longer willing to waste my money on brands that clearly don’t give a damn about quality. I remember in the 90’s and early 2000’s when designer brands boomed and diffusion labels were a big thing for designers that luxury fashion was about exclusivity and about taking pride in the quality of materials, craftsmanship and unique design elements, nowadays luxury fashion is a business model that fakes inclusivity, fakes sustainability and lies about quality by creating an illusion of “heritage and tradition” on non existing values to trick consumers paying exuberant prices for the most pedestrian pieces of clothing, accessories that are literally falling off of machines by the 100’s an hour. So no luxury isn’t luxury anymore… it’s been replaced by vulgarity and luxury was turned into “over priced”. Again sorry about your beautiful boots and hope customer service will make it right ❤

Wow ! I wear only Rick Owens fir a decade and still have shoes that look solid . Such a fluke imo.. but I used to own 30 year old pieces from dolce , Versace and Gucci when Tom ford designed and every piece is still immaculate. I agree with many quality has gotten worse when I see many new pieces don’t survive a hand wash in the sink. Rick Owens is still one of the best designers out there and you are right when you point out his bags .. incredible quality and very well made.. also get your money back !! Lol

Thank you dear. I have since been doing more research and seems as though online there are quite a few reviews stating that current Rick shoes have quite a few issues. I haVe wuite a few of his sneaker collaborations with adidas from 2015 and later and they are almost all still pristine and I wear them a lot. Only one pair broke due to poor construction once but the other shoes are still fine. Now this new model of shoe… the sliver boot… it just was not designed properly apparently… I am working on a refund.
