I've been lectured about it before. "If I were you, I'd use your money on an experience instead of that." Well, sometimes whatever I've purchased is an experience, at least to me. I save my clothes and bags to use for years (mostly).

For sure. People don't all prioritize the same things. I'd rather have a closet full of beautiful, eclectic shoes, bags, and clothes than travel someplace. Italy will be there next week, that amazing trench coat that went on sale will not, lol!

@@beautyininsanity421 so so true. After all we should al be respected with our own hobbies and what we find enjoyable, some people prefer a nice vacation others a very nice handbag. We could argue some can have both but we all have priorities on what we enjoy and all our priorities should be respected. Personally I do prefer traveling and get a contemporary designer bag but it’s okay to prefer to postpone a vacation and get your dream bag.

Some people will fly on budget airlines with trash bag luggage and cook rice and beans in their hostels and be like “I’m in France y’all.” And if that makes them happy that’s cool. But don’t criticize me for my designer bag, because I’m flying business class with it in my lap. An “experience” without luxury is a tribulation _to me._ We are not the same, so don’t expect me to be 😤

Omg I was JUST talking about this. The whole idea that wealthy people don’t buy designer is such a fallacy lol. I know and have been around wealthy people. They buy designer and luxury just as you said. They buy things that we may not even know are expensive. They’re the type to have 50,000 statues in their home that look like cheaper and affordable purchases lol

My wife and I are decamillionaires. We don't own anything "designer." And probably the only "luxury" brand items we own are our Teslas- because we love the cars, not to impress broke people. Broke people are the biggest buyers of designer and luxury items. That's why Saks, Mercedes, Tiffany, BMW, etc all have such profitable credit departments. They loan money at high interesr rates to broke people who buy items they can't afford so they can "look rich."
@anovosedlik
@anovosedlik 5 ай бұрын
When this topic is discussed, there needs to be an explanation of what people mean by 'rich'. We aren't talking about those with 20-30mil. Depending on where you live, have that much in liquid and non-liquid assets could be meaningless. We're talking about serious wealth...40mil+ at LEAST in assets. And it's not that wealthy folks don't buy luxury items; they don't buy mid-luxe crap like dinky LV bags made from 'genuine leather' aka the LOWEST grade leather. If you think Chanel, LV, and Gucci are luxury, you don't know true luxury. Brands that have outlet stores are NOT brands that wealthy people are interested in. The only ones that wear those brands are rich people that are PAID to.
@stacyr3743

I think “silent luxury” is that other class of luxury that is even more expensive than the well known luxury brands. Those brands cater to a smaller population of wealthy that can afford them. So for instance, when most of us think of luxury watches, we may think of Rolex, but the extremely unattainable brands are even more expensive, therefore most people have never heard of them. My husband does research in luxury marketing, so I think that’s given me this bit of insight.

Man, this has been one of the biggest topics in my head since I made my first ever luxury brand purchase (a black Pochette Metis from LV back in March). It's honestly so snobbish. There is such a thing as ordinary people who don't have A LOT of money appreciating the finer things in life that can be expensive for them. I don't have to be a fashion VIP to learn about and appreciate what Haute Couture is. Besides, Louis Vuitton was born into poverty, just like Gabrielle Chanel was. They were just like us once, normal people just trying to do what they love regardless of circumstances. And now their fashion is worn in Hollywood. People need to mind their own business and keep to themselves. People can buy expensive things without putting themselves in financial danger.

When I was a kid in the 80s we wore chanel sweaters or gucci, we knew they were counterfeit but everyone assumed it was genuine on the rich kids, me. I didn't even know what the brands meant. Now I have genuine items am not rich but I have enough to have these little luxuries and get judged. I know this because people tell me, it is really strange how people feel that's okay. Anyway I do mostly have contemporary designers but luxury is subjective. Anything past a necessity is an extra in my book. So for me my fossil bag is just as cool as my vintage celine.

I have never understood the myth that only "poor people" (whatever that really means) buy luxury to look rich. You can't make that make sense! Financially speaking, poor means to be without resources. With that being the case, how could a poor person possibly afford to buy a luxury house item? And you're correct, Super Dacob, that the über-rich and the aristocratic sets certainly do incorporate luxury names into their overall attire. So whoever started that nonsense was just blowing hot air. And truly, to wear luxury or not to wear luxury is a personal decision.
@libertarian4323
@libertarian4323 Жыл бұрын
Perhaps "broke" is a better word than poor? Lots of broke people have 6-figure incomes, and can afford to make payments on "luxury" items they really can't afford. All the luxury brands/stores have thriving credit departments charging high interest rates to broke people trying to look rich. Rich people don't need credit to buy a $10k bag. They just pay for it.

Once I was carrying an LV and went to McDonald's for takeouts. When I was walking out of the door, I overheard someone mumbling something like 'Did you come in here to save money for the bag? ' I was shocked because people still assume that people need to save in order to get luxury but the truth is some people save for emergency not for a bag. I meant when I hit the emergency fund target, I reward myself by buying a bag. This way, I have both luxury and money for emergency. And I eat both fast food and high quality food. I think in some way, it pains some people that there are people who enjoy life and not mind spending huge amount on things that can be scratched up and don't generate more wealth . They will never understand the convenience using luxury items can bring.

I am a person who buys luxury that is not logo heavy. I prefer subtle designer goods because that is my taste. I also tend to buy products that are not popular because it doesn't look too trendy. Besides my personal taste, I don't want to be a target of robbers or thieves; certain brands have been counterfeited so much that the brand is devalued where I live especially Louis Vuitton. I detest people asking me how much I pay for certain things. It is none of your business of what I buy and how much I paid for it. Just rest assured that I can afford it. I have a furnished home. I have a running car and I eat well. As a member of a minority, my lighter hued coworkers are always asking me how much I pay for stuff. A coworker called me out in a meeting because she noted that I didn't repeat an outfit in over 3 months. Then she insinuated that I must spend my entire paycheck on my outfits. I kept my cool and let her sound crazy. A few days later, she came to my desk and asked me where I live (I use a PO Box as my legal address in a city closer to my home). I pretended I didn't hear and I got up quickly to go to a fake meeting. When she dug around and found out that I live an affluent neighborhood, she asked if I lived in a townhouse or single family home. Again, rushed to a fake meeting. I purposely do not discuss finances or lifestyle choices with the group I work with. The toxicity and jealousy are too much!!

Wow. No one should ever try to make you feel guilty for appreciating whatever lifestyle suits you in your life. No one has any right to tell a person what to value in life. Like, no right at all to tell you what you should & shouldn’t invest. People don’t realize that you’re own life is in investment. They don’t like seeing others who value themselves actually invest in who they are. That’s a form of self-care, showing yourself that you actually love & value who you are. The people who hate you for doing this & criticize you for doing it, are those who don’t love themselves enough to truly value & invest in themselves to improve their life. Js 🤷🏾‍♀️

I find this (the topic) a form of bullying. It’s either to make people who can afford luxury guilty or bad. It makes those who aren’t “rich” who save for an item- and get LV, Gucci, etc feel bad also. This is ridiculous. It’s going to give those who are insecure a complex and then think only certain brands reflect certain things. Yes, there are tiers of luxury. Some brands are and start at a higher price point. Any thousand dollar bag or hundreds of dollars wallet, if not thousands, can not be “poor”. This topic is annoying. Bullies to make one party or the next feel bad and bully them. What is poor?!?!?

Also, I seriously echo the sentiments here. I find it truly sad that human beings are still trapped in this terrible cycle of judging one another. Who gives a shit, honestly? I’d love to live in a world where wealth or poverty meant nothing in the realm of fashion, and it was just about simply hitting the vibe and loving /exuding confidence in what you wear, whether the bag cost you $20 or $20k. Let’s replace this so called silent luxury with the subtle elegance of how good it looks to be your own person, stay in your lane, and to let everyone else live their fantasy without being a bitter Betty, always criticizing others. Whether you’re a punk in thrifted doc martens, giving ‘em hell while wearing Chanel, or dressed head to toe in the Row and you’re just a gal on the go who grabs a cute TJ maxx tote and you’re out the door, the only thing that matters should be how fabulous you feel while not giving a fuck what anyone else thinks of you.

@@seabreeze4559 Those are certain types of people you’re talking about are fakes. This is not surprising and quite common here in NYC. Especially, in our entertainment industry. I dated an Ivy League man for many years from my previous relationship graduated from Columbia University, an esteemed athlete for Columbia University Rowing team, worked in high ranking NYC Wall Street was very wealthy, owned several properties and drove sports cars. He didn’t like to flaunt nor brag and was incredibly generous to people. He gave so much to the homeless shelters and other charities that luxury brands was not his thing. Except sports cars that he loved. He was incredibly humble and pretty private about his wealth. Those are the types of people who are authentic. Mind you,I was way poorer than him and used to work in restaurants and bit of acting and modeling back then. He didn’t care about my financial status. He only cared who he was in love with. At the end of the day, fake people only care about an image they want to maintain and authentic and real people don’t give a flying rip what others think. That’s me in a nutshell 😂😂

Hi Dacob! I have had the experience of being surrounded by rich people in different stages and situations of my life and all I can say is that the richer they are the more developed is their taste for good quality things such as food, travel, learning, etc Some love logos and others dont, but that doesnt change the fact they know what the fine things in life are. I personally think money accentuates who you truly are. If you are a generous person when you are poor, you will be even more generous if you become rich. If you are an asshole, you become even more of an asshole if you become rich hahaha I love collecting pretty things and i dont spend much in fancy restaurants, nor partying, etc so i can afford my luxury obsessions because i choose them carefully.

Spending your money when you can afford it is fine and dandy . I am not speaking on people who have money. Yes you can spend your money as you like but individuals who spend over 10% of there annual income on a small piece of leather is not a smart move. Walking down the street with $10, 000 bag and you make $70,000 a year and you don't own a home or money in the bank does make you look foolish. For the rich it it is a drop in the bucket. For others it is just going to keep you poor. MHO

ironically the people they try to impress genuinely are (Old Money is literally about the aristocracy and 'good breeding' i.e. staying "pure" - not the actual money) and it seems like white larping by mostly American black or broadly Asian demographics. Sad to see the self-loathing. Would like to see a new money that isn't tacky but doesn't bow to that assumption white = better. Super interesting video Dacob. I think you make some great points. I think as I have gotten older i have become more interested in luxury based on quality over quantity and also to be frank living in the most expensive region in the U.S. I have found that by having a few luxury pieces that serve different purposes I am able to feel more confident within my surroundings and not waste more money on cheaper trend pieces. I notice I am treated as being more important/taken more seriously when I carry my pieces. It really does sound silly to say rich people don't care about luxury. Furthermore, if you are single and don't have children and work, it is not surprising then, that you would spend your money as you please. Some people like to eat, travel, party and others like to have things that they can use more than once. There isn't a right or wrong answer!

Hi Dacob, I always enjoy popping onto your channel ! I see this one a little differently. Silent luxury is a very real thing. And, I am drawn to a more understated style myself. Honestly I do observe that higher net worth individuals and families tend to steer clear of recognizable signs of consumption. They tend to go low key, not necessarily because they find the logos gouache (although they likely do) but so as not to draw too much unwanted attention. A book called “The Old Money Book” by Byron Tully is really a quick and interesting read. Essentially at a certain echelon there are certain core values and ways of being that are common to that ilk. I agree with you 💯! I've heard people throwing this BS around for a while. Let's start with the fact that the kings and queens of the past were the most opulent over the top consumers of luxury. Hello, has anyone seen Versailles? The homes of the Medicis? Luxury isn't about logos or not logos, it's about what we ascribe value to. If you don't have time in the day to yourself maybe 5 minutes sitting outside looking at nature is a "luxury". I think you touched on many different points, including the judgement that fashion receives in comparison to other things. I have an inkling that it boils down to deep rooted sexism and misogyny (and I'm including people within the LGBTQ community as being the unfortunate recipients of this as well). Things that are typically associated with "female" pursuits tend to be viewed as more frivolous and less worthy than something like sports activities. Why aren't thousand $ sports bikes included in this judgement? Golfing equipment and fees? I've always enjoyed beautiful things, and things that make me feel good. I get facials, eat at nice restaurants, travel, like home decor, wear nice clothes, and handbags (of course!), but not because I need to show off, but because I enjoy it. And just like you, friends who would spend hundreds of $$ every weekend drinking, clubbing, and whatever else, would make comments about my choices. Like you said, what you put on is a costume. Some days you want to blend into the background and others you want to look like a peacock. Who cares? Everyone should mind their own business.

I appreciate art in all forms. I make fragrances. My materials can run from $5-50+ but there are many iterations (I've changed a formula about 100 times until I got it where I wanted it) and lots of maturing time. There are also some materials that cost thousands for a few drops (like real Oud). Some people think they can pay me just for the cost of a generic frag, for bespoke perfume. No honey, that's not how it works. If they want mass market, they can go to the mall. Another funny one is when they want a "cheap dupe" of something like Chanel, Le Labo, Creed, etc., how insulting. Lol. Anyhow, my point is, there are those that can appreciate quality, the craft, the sincerity of the designer and will pay for what they want. Value is all personal.

Just another reminder that when people see luxury items they don’t know if they’re gifted or inherited or vintage or thrifted or bought price full with YOUR money that you choose to spend on the things YOU love. People are way too into other peoples pockets. I’m transparent when asked but I don’t feel like I need to explain myself and I don’t care if people think I spend 200 or 5000. I love my modest collection and it’s no one’s business except me and hubby. Thanks for the great video!

OMG Dacob, you made some excellent well thought out points👍 Bit off topic but I love my small collection of luxury bags, but was made to feel utterly guilty by my relatives for treating myself with MY OWN MONEY after completing some tough projects. They always tell me why I don't donate to the poor, instead of going around with my luxury bags. It honestly used to make me feel bad about using my small luxury collection. Thks so much for this video, I can finally ENJOY my luxury bags.

You are so right. When petty people have negative opinions about my labels I just say I can’t help it that they have bad taste and I have good taste. I love my things they make me happy. I am rich 🤑

This topic is a bit controversial, depends which kind of rich we're talking about..style & culture as well. Nowadays even Brunello Cucinelli, Bottega Veneta & Loro Piana are jumping ship, plastering logos or being all over social media.. I have a few friends who spend tons of money of shoes, bags etc but never go on vacation or go out for dinner, on contrary they'll be judging me for traveling. Each to their own, i prefer to do both in moderation

Needed this! I have a modest designer handbag collection that I worked hard for and love but this whole “quiet luxury” thing was making me feel badly or like I’m trash because I’m not a millionaire but I’ve got a Lady Dior. I’m comfortably middle class with no debt and this video really helped me say screw the haters I love my designer bags and if some people will judge me for it then oh well.

Well, for the last month I switched to Tory Burch and I’m satisfied with the brand because it gives me the same esthetic as Chanel. I’m also tired of people thinking my luxury bags are fake and/or questioning my finances. My bags were preloved. I’m definitely tired of seeing the same luxury brand of bags all over social media as if no other brands exist.

It’s ultimately a matter of preference and taste. I know what it’s like to have nothing and now that I have an abundance, I am going to get what I like which is luxury and I like the logos - I like the aesthetic of them, period. Poor/super low class simply can’t afford Louis Vuitton, Dior, Chanel especially with these pricing increases. So the idea that poor people try to look rich wearing them is absurd to me.

it's middle-class people watching too many Anna Bey videos thinking they'll fit in by being a mean girl also calls prettier women Plain Jane, because they think we can't judge things for ourselves like, Kate Middleton is NOT plain literally modelled

At the end of the day some people like high quality health/foods/cars/clothing/traveling experiences. My main priorities are good health,good food and traveling experiences with a decent car and clothing. But that’s just me! To each their own. I got judged about bags over “vacation experiences”. I let them know that I hate packing, unpacking, cleaning & putting away things so unless they do it for me n my whole family they should keep to their own. 😜 thanks for sharing my love. ❤️😘😘😘Sandy

quiet luxury is a thing, especially with people I know who are “old money”. I have monogram LV, and Gucci, however my true loves are Hermes & Loewe. It’s all about personal taste. I do see new money people that I know running straight for the logos as soon as they can afford them. Me, I’d rather run to Hermes. Again, just my preference. Quiet luxury is definitely a thing.

Omg I had a friend like that. Taxis, expensive food, partying. I walk everywhere, bring my own lunch to work, only go out occasionally, but I like nice clothes/accessories. They couldn’t figure out how I could afford my wardrobe 😂 I think I spend less on my clothes than they spent on daily conveniences and fun

Reminds me of the snooty sales people that judge you when you shop at luxury places… like if you look like you can afford it but they obviously can’t.

I have a KZbin channel and I would never make comments about what buying a specific item means or put down someone for liking a particular brand or logo. I’m tired of these comments that allege that logos are for poor people. Puh-lease!

ironically Anna looks like the very chavs she is mocking fake tan, filler face, too skinny body, straw fake blonde hair, hair extensions, gross gel nails that are dirty underneath (can't see to clean), plastic surgery (esp nose job) and coarse attitude to prettier women e.g. and the women she tries to call plain jane are just naturally gorgeous, which she can't stand called a cope or high on copium online
