At some point (and I blame social media) people began confusing buying expensive brand name items with having style. Style has aways been individual. You used to look at magazines, or if you were really into fashion, the collections. Then you would choose the items YOU liked and fit your style and would buy them (or the inevitable copies). Then you would combine them with your own items and maybe your Mom's or Grandma's. Yes, it was always good to have basics, but basics did not make your look, they were the foundation that you then layered on top of. I love having small designer brands in my collection and have been opting more and more for those than anything with a big name label.

Yep, that was my experience too this year. I bought four dining chairs from a luxury furniture brand. It was an exhausting chore from order to delivery. One chair of course had one leg too short, which took them another 3 weeks to correct but they never contacted me again. I had to constantly call them and ask when I might receive that repaired chair. One chair was 1k mind you. The customer service was never bothered for a second. They were like "whatever". It's crazy.

Luxury will always be luxury, the wealthy will always have their little niche, they just don’t want us to know what that is. @ I had seen some Hermes bags on a video in Japan or Hong Kong that were way cheaper. The thing about the corporate brands is that they are desperate to sell in China because of the high population. So a lot of brands have made it cheaper. All a big scam really where we foot the bill at the highest price. When those Tariffs happen, there could be a drop in price to get people buying on a domestic level. Unless even the handmade stuff is made in China. Armani, Hugo Boss, Superdry or mid luxury brands could go out of business.

Funny thing, I rarely use my classics, they’re too dressy (I have beige double flap, and a navy). I do use my vintage bags that are more casual. Most I’ve had 10-15 years and have straps that can extend out to wear crossbody. I just yesterday pulled out a biggish faux fur that I’ll wear this winter. It’s a bit worn but still in excellent shape for everyday. I dunno how many other bags I could say that about (older LV the leather straps dry out. Gucci linings peel 🤷♀️). Anyway, all keep that in mind before investing in a new classic - I get that you simply want to have it. I remember that feeling.

I was watching Diane Gilman on KZbin, and she was saying that, living in NYC and eating out a lot, she doesn't see all the designer names anymore. Times are changing as they always do but some of the high-end brand names seemed to have missed the mark. I also think, my opinion, I think the high-end brands are made in China. If I am correct, I believe three things have to be Italian in order for the bag to be stamped 'Made in Italy', and one of those is the label. But I do think they are made there in a factory, and it may explain why the fakes are almost or if not, identical. I do like the classic vintage Chanel bags, and I think they will become more valuable in time.

There's a mini Polene bag I really like, but it comes with a cross-body strap that is very firmly sewn and glued onto the outside of it; even though it has a top handle! I can't buy it, because I know I'd only ever carry it by that top handle and every review I've seen the youtuber also has zero interest in wearing it cross body, yet they are visibly trying to bargain with themselves on camera to be "okay with it". I finally saw someone who did a review like that decide to resell it and their reasoning was exactly as I expected; they loved it, for the same reasons I like it, but there's no way to ignore the giant thick strap just dangling all over. In their review, months earlier, they claimed that "oh, you know, just stuff the thick leather strap into the tiny mini bag and it'll, uh... It'll work. Yeah. See? Um... I can still maybe fit my wallet in it. Maybe a cardholder instead?" For the price Polene sells at, many other companies at that price point or lower offer bags where you are "allowed" to add or remove the straps and there's a very casual "take it or leave it" vibe. With luxury brands there's this weird; "you have to cope with our design choices" vibe, where in consumers feel like they have to put up with and talk themselves into tolerating things they don't actually like.
