IMO very impressive results for such a small short stroke engine in a world full of 347 SBFs. Was surprized at the torque too from such lower compression.. What a great job that proves how important the combination is..

And they say there’s nothing to the rod length to stroke ratio! See what it can do?.
@lykinsmotorsports
@lykinsmotorsports 5 ай бұрын
Hahaha, there is nothing. The rod simply holds the piston to the crank. A long rod makes for a light piston. That's pretty much it.

You are a very smart and well informed engine builder that has humility as well. I'm an old blister at 63 that has built his fair share of race engines and all the suggestions you give are accurate and proven. Its also refreshing that you are willing to test and learn so you can provide the best product possible to your customers. I hope you get the back tuned up and ready for racing again! Had L1-L5 fused, two discs replaced, tumor removed from spinal cord and half a vert removed. Kinda sucked for a while but way way better now.

A little over 2 years ago I received what I would call a defective crank from SCAT. I returned it and bought an Eagle ESP to replace it. The Eagle ESP crank was near perfect and everything was chamfered very nicely. It has given me no problems, so far :)

Nice job! Having such tight piston/valve clearance with only 0.530" net lift points to a super tight LSA and a lot of cam advance... but peaking at 7400 RPM with only 239 @ 0.050" usually indicates otherwise! I'm guessing a massive I/E split. lol These 289/306 engines really run strong once you install some decent parts and arrive at a good combination! SFT cams also work great on 7k rpm 289/302's as the limited displacement of these engines doesn't demand crazy airflow. They use to be a cheap way to build a strong 289/302 engine before flat tappets became unreliable.

I’ve heard all my life that advanced cam timing builds low end and retarded cam timing does the opposite but IMO that shouldn’t be a general rule. This engine was on a 101 degree ICL, 8 degrees advanced. Massive is relative I guess, but I would consider 20 degrees to be massive. 8-10 is “normal” for me with a Ford head.

@@lykinsmotorsports A wide split helps them RPM. Kind of the best of both worlds. I built a 306 decades ago right before all the aftermarket heads and Chinese stroker kits came out. Had owner ported 289 heads. I spec'd the SFT cam out as 236/248 @ 0.050" and 0.560 lift. Comp 282S and Comp 294S street lobes. Tens of thousands of street/strip miles and often sole transportation. With a toploader and 4.30 gear it ran 7.48 @ 92 in the 1/8 n/a at full weight and 10.63/6.48 at 127/103 with a small plate. Most fun street engine ever, and was BEAT on daily. Basically the same engine with a SFT 242/254 cam and owner ported TW170 heads went 6.27/9.87 at 109/137 on the same 200hp plate and toploader. Pump gas n/a. I'm a big fan of the 289/306. Those engines surprised a LOT of cars that had them beaten badly on paper. Have a 363 in the same car now, but the 306's were more fun on the street. 363 is too much in an old chassis on hard street tires. lol

It does help higher rpm, but mainly the split is based off of intake/exhaust flow ratios. That kinda plays into high rpm.

Brent, My -.005" decked Pontiac block has a .440" lobe(largest I am told can fit due to dismeter of cam) and I had .0280" and .0264" piston to valve clearance. Radial clearance was about .070" if memory serves. Thats with a Harland Sharpe 1.65 rocker. I could use more ratio, its just not available in a traditional rocker. I will go shaft rockers, but it will be on a different engine, heads etc. Point is all 1967-79 traditional Pontiac engines have plenty of P/V clearance. Excluding 301's which I know nothing about. I'd assume similar architecture, but dont know for certain. Every Pontiac I have ever built has more than plenty.

That kind of rpm in a stock block seems like a lot vs using a dart block. Were other things done to help strengthen the block? Curious on your thoughts there. Also you mentioned this would be a great setup for street car. What kind of vacuum does it make at idle?

I have a fairly similar 302. Same crank, Scat 5.4 rods Icon pistons and AFR 195 Renegade heads. It comes in at 11.29:1 compression. I reused a E303 cam with Scorpion 1.82 rocker arms 7/16 stud. She runs pretty good. I can run with a stock 50th anniversary Camaro in my Mercury Capri. What do you think?

We did a basic 347 with the old iron Wilbert High ports that flowed well. Victor Jr and a b303 cam w/ 1.72’s. Just a few dyno pulls and it was 425hp/413tq. Then we sent it to FL for my dad’s Maverick and it has a sniper set up.

I’ve got a question. What would be a good solid flat tappet camshaft for a 351-W 0.060 over with flat top 4 valve relief forged pistons. Stock stroke, Speedmaster 210cc cylinder heads. Victor jr intake. 750 out of the box Proform mechanical secondary carburetor. PA Automatic race transmission. MSD Pro bullet dizzy with MSD 6AL. 4:10 gears. Car has been caged and gutted. Aftermarket wiring harness. The camshaft that I’m using now is 0.500 int 0.522 exhaust 225-235 112 centerline. Thanks. 536 hp for a 311 ci is badass!

I always used shorter lift wider duration camshafts even on flat tappet hydraulics even back in early 90's i run a Erson tq30 was 494 lift advertised 298 duration run hard 3-7k but that was long time ago really cool numbers I used 71 Windsor heads back then with 194 intakes 154 exhausts car was performer rpm and 650 Holley pump gas at 4500 feet above sea level on damn street tires i run 13.27 at 105 first gear was useless 86 fox body stock 5 speed but i averaged 20 miles per gallon and back in 90-92 I rarely lost a race believe it or not. Anyway neat to here a solid roller lifter set up more duration etc run well I am not shocked them types of cams do run well in SBF. Anyway my car would of run mid to low 12's with slicks but id probably blew the 5 speed trying it so never did i was literally best 60 foot 2.1 horrible just spin short shifted second kinda bog then go. This brought so much memories sure do wish I had my old car and that engine sucks being disabled now I can move around just hurts alot more I broke my back in early 2000 51 years old now. Anyway I ever get better off I will remember you and maybe have you build this set up for another car. Thank you for video ty for reading take care and God Bless
