yesterday 9 December on the 15.30 Exeter Central to Exmouth the conductor actually walked the entire length of the train checking whether anyone wanted to alight at Lympstone Commando. Shows what a bit of online pressure can achieve. Well done!

Just requested Lympstone Commando and was told that they can’t let you off unless you have business with the camp. My second time of trying to get off there. The truth is that you roll the dice with what guard you get and you might be able to get off, you might not.
@Synnystershy Жыл бұрын
They can't say no as the station is owned by Network Rail and is managed by GWR and the camp can't do anything about it.

In Scotland there is quite a long stretch of railway that is only separated from a military base by a path. Between Monifieth and Barry Links there is a big military base along the railway line and a foot/cycle path in between the 2. I cycled there before when I had to be near Barry Links and didn't want to wait for the once a day train.

These trains are my daily commute to work, it’s weirdly exciting to see you come down to Digby & Sowton (where I get off to walk to work). It a quiet little stop except for rush hour when it regularly has 60+ people getting on/off each train.

Exton was my second ever request stop. I got off an Exeter-bound train at Lympstone Village and managed to walk along the path to Exton in time to get the next Exeter-bound train.

I loved the fact you had a "senior moment" getting the anticipated direction of the train to board confused - this is the problem when filming & thinking alone without an assistant - I know this when I tried filming a wedding on my own - bedlam! Anyway - very interesting video - well done!
@rosswalker72297 жыл бұрын
Went there last year. Ended up with a jobsworth station guard that advised we couldn't exit and had to board the next one out. I think you just struck it lucky in visiting it whilst unmanned.

Aww man, I lived in Exmouth and travelled by train to Exeter every weekday and never knew about the Ranger tickets. :( Digby and Sowton was my stop. There totally are things there. :p Before the foot/cycle path, there was nowhere to go if you alighted at Commando. So they genuinely did only let you alight if you had business with the base. Then they built the cycle path and changed the rules, but evidently haven't taken the sign down. Oh, and Newcourt is built and in use now.

I was expecting a video of Geoff stopping at Lympstone Commando and being given the King's Shilling and now it's Sergeant Major Geoff Marshall, they did say you couldn't alight.

Memories of commuting from St James' Park to Exmouth 40 years ago. Back then neither Lympstone Commando nor Exton was a request stop. At that time the only exit from LC was indeed into the CTC. More recently the MoD and Network Rail had a 'discussion' and it was concluded that the Mod could not prevent civilians alighting . I didn't know abut the cycle track, must take a trip down there when lockdown is over.

Ok I am super late to this series, do you explain somewhere how exactly to request a stop? I live in a part of the US where there aren't any passenger trains and I've only taken subways, and regional trains in France so I don't have any experience with a request stop. How do you get back on the train at a request stop?
@TurboFintan7 жыл бұрын
On a train: tell the guard you want to alight at a request-stop station. At a request-stop station: indicate to the driver you wish to get on the train as it slows on approach (usually stick your arm out clearly towards the track)
@janicew97 жыл бұрын

sadly since privatisation split up the railway with no common engineering based ruling authority, there are a plethora of different couplings, and different multiple through control systems , thus coupling differing classes of multiple units is often impossible, and rescue locomotives have a nightmare array of adaptors
