I rode and showed horses as a preteen and teen. It was scary at times. I almost was trampled by one of my horses in Elmira, NY. My horse spooked after attempting a jump as I was schooling my horse. One of the maintenance men started up a lawnmower. My foot got caught in my stirrup and I was dragged. My grandmother had died in April 20, 1996. This was in approximately July 1996. So scary. I remember his hooves coming towards my face. I've been slammed into fences while showing. Ypu got back on without QUESTIONING your trainer. No ambulance or hospital. My mom put ice on me the whole night at the hotel room. These are 1000 plus lb animals. An orca is 12,000 lbs or more. Poor Dawn. I can't even imagine.

So sad, but it should be the assumed outcome from the time they kidnap the Orca and force them into performance slavery in a tank. Irony, in the documentary Blackfish, when they kidnapped "Tilikum" from his mother and his pod, they end up killing three orcas and sinking them to the bottom of the Ocean. "Tilikum" ended up costing three human lives. If his illness had a human diagnosis, it would be PTSD times 10!

Dawn's life was a cruel irony. As a child she got hood winked into loving something that actually made the animals she loved completely miserable and sick. Her passion blinded her to the cruel reality right in front of her and it got her killed. Seaworld captivates and influences the mind of a child about something they shouldn't be doing. And they will do anything to "trick" you into thinking that the whales are perfectly happy. At Seaworld in Orlando when you go to the show, the theater faces this huge body of water. I swear as a kid I thought those whales lived out in that huge body of water and just came in voluntarily to do the show. Otherwise what's that that big lake out there for? I was really pissed as an adult when I realized it's just for show. No animal is living in that big lake. They all live in small swimming pools. My dream as a child was to ride elephants in a circus. I wanted to do nothing else. I found a job doing just that. I loved those elephants and those elephants loved me. But i was not a scientist nor an animal researcher. I was a highly trained animal handler. Then one day they came to us and said that the animals experts have said we had to stop. We were hurting the elephants by making them perform day after day, city after the city. I was shocked and sad. But i didn't go fight for my right to live out my passion. I didn't fight for laws to keep elephants in circuses. Dawn's death is what happens when we keep wild animals captive who should not ever be held captive. A smart people, a good people would learn from her death and be a bettre people, not advocate for the continued holding of killer whales out of some desire to honor Dawn's intense passion and pure intention or continue to defend an outdated profession using the cry of a love for animals as an excuse. The well-being of the whales go beyond any of our own emotional difficulties and if Dawn were here I have no doubt she would agree and accept just as I had to with the elephants. I also believe she would no longer want to be shown doing what is now considered abuse and exploitation of killer whales. She would understand that her intense love for the animals does not trump their well-being and would now cringe at the audaciousness of doing something like standing on the nose of a killer whale at the bottom of a swimming pool coming up for an audience's applause or the sheer insolence displayed by sticking her tongue on a whales tongue as she used to so often do. She would be ashamed at such a lack of respect shown to a great mammal whom she so loved. But importantly, she would further forgive herself as she should and as we should also. Because by the end of the day, those whales should not be permanently confined to a swimming pool - ever.

SeaWolrd has not taken an orca from the wild in 36 years in fact SeaWorld only hired someone to take a killer whale once SeaWorld does not have NEARLY as much chlorine in there water as told in Blackfish. SeaWorld Proved it in one of there Askseaworld videos. They showed that they have more chlorine in there tap water then in there pools in fact they get there water from the wild The raking this is establishing dominance after a while they figure out whose the Matriarch and they chill The only reason Kandu rammed Corky was because Corky was with Her calf (Orkid) SeaWorld does not deprive of the Orcas food infact John Hargrove emitted in one of his tweets that any trainer that ever did that was a poor trainer stating that it was not normal and all the SeaWorld employees said that they have never seen anyone do that before When they show the calves being taken away (Takara) Takara was already 13 and the whales they show are not the whales they are talking about like when they are talking about Katina being a quiet whale and they showed the orca vocalizing THAT WAS NOT HER Katina grew up with a tilted dorsal fin (not an effect of Captivity btw) she was kinda born with it They say they live in a bathtub when that is false its ridiculous but people even think that its a "bathtub" that has a show pool, the two biiggg back pools, the med pool, and the Dine with shamu pool witch they have access to all the time after shows They also have toys and playtime all the time they get to look at the ppl underwater they get to hang out/ train and play with there trainers and hangout with there friends/relatives Tilikum was not alone he still got tons of attention and love and he even spends most of his time with hos grandson Trua When you see the whales floating that is normally after shows when there are resting they cant be playing 24/7 they have to rest SeaWorld has wanted to put in a water tread mill so that the orcas could get the same exercise as they would in the wild but PETA and Blackfish supporters just said They were "avoiding the problem" And there has been attacks on people in the wild in fact this one guy got attacked so bad he had to get over 100 stitches its a miricle he survived sure there hasn't been as meany but ppl don't normally swim with them that often so when the trainers get in the water all the time then ya there is gonna be attacks and the trainers knew that Blackfish and PETA are complaining that the whales are "Bored" but as they keep complaining and keep protesting they ended up getting rid of Believe a show with trainers in the water Interacting with the whales but when that show was erased so was SOOO many fun and enriching behaviors like Hydro, Rocket, pec push, and even nose stand so they made the whales even more bored Next came One Ocean one ocean was filled with elaborate Jumps and Spins but... PETA was like NOOOOO ItS nOt EdUcAtIoNaL so they got rid of even more behaviors making the whales even more bored Now we have Shamus Story And Orca Encounter with Orcas Swimming on there backs, showing off there fins and tails, and occasional jumps Blackfish and PETA make the problems and SeaWorld has to take the punches they have to deal with PETA and Blackfish's mistakes And if u d wondering the flopped dorsal fins are actually no big deal It is not coused by there mood its just bc of the water pressure Orcas at SeaWorld can not swim as deep as in the wild so the spend more time at the surface and a Orcas dorsal has no bone its just skin making there dorsal flop over wich doesn't hurt them or effect anything And just so ya know John hargrove only left SeaWorld bc he got Demoted to Sea Lion Stadium after Keeping one of the orcas gates open

all the things that you wrote are true. With that said this is first of all a political issue, with no laws in place to protect animals from these types of activities. Second it's a capitalistic corporate issue, where business are more concerned about profit than animal rights. Sure you can argue one shouldn't apply for jobs in such places, but Dawn was just a very small chip in a whole system that is facilitates this kind of business. I don't blame the whale at all, but I certainly have empathy for Dawn and what happened to her. It is still a tragic accident, she didn't deserve this either.

@@missJolie85What I said is true I studied animal behaviour and abnormal behaviours in captive animals is widely documented. I agree I don't blame dawn either I think they were lied to by the corporate machine too. Having said that the trainers spent time around these animals so they must have realised that it wasn't right and that these animals were suffering. Some of them commit suicide by smashing their own heads off the concrete tanks. They cannot adapt to this oppressive environment when they are evolved to swim thousands of miles a day in the ocean. Many are already traumatised from being kidnapped from their mother's in the ocean or their mother's are separated from them so that they can entertain the public. We know in many species that breaking maternal bonds can have devastating consequences for behaviour and survival.

I don't believe you have studied this professionally, or that you know more than the average informed person who does their research and due diligence in the matters they discuss. I am aware of the general nature of killer whales in the wild, as well as effect and symptoms of captivity. I also know the sad story about THIS perticular whale (who has killed two people before Dawn), beautiful Tilikum (he has since died). I also believe in a world of evil, it's better to have trainers who actually cares about these animals - even with the horrible circumstances they are in. The alternative wold be having trainers who doesn't care at all - and that would be even worse for the whales. You can find many of them in developing countries, who are doing it solely for an income to survive. This activity will not go away because good trainers quit. It has to stop from a higher level.

Their greatest advocates hate the fact that they end up in a tiny tank to be exploited day in day out to repeat the same stupid show for the rest of their lives; so that Seaworld can make billions from them. They are deprived of their natural senses, forced to perform like clowns and become unhealthy and deeply depressed. Tragic what happened to Dawn but those are wild animals turned into puppets for entertainment; and eventually enough is enough. Yeah I get your comment, but it's catch 22 you work there and see the animals are abused but leave and turn a blind eye... the trainers stayed to try to give the whales better lives to ensure they were getting cared for because sea world, the main trainer and vets didn't give a damn. They had no control over those whales... none at all.
@kristine63244 жыл бұрын
All of these trainers and seaworld employees are SO arrogant. These animals belong in the ocean, not performing tricks in a bathtub to make a corporation money. None of these people have integrity, though they love to tell themselves that they do. Fooling themselves. If they had any integrity, supporting this operation would make them absolutely ill. And please don't talk to me about how much they "love" the whales, dolphins, etc. Puke. Open ocean sanctuaries are the only option, or release when appropriate. There is nothing positive about seaworld, it's a money operation. Gross.

She made good points. But these animals can’t live in tanks. They need to be swimming freely as intended in the sea. I don’t understand how these trainers can’t see that. The captive environment is a miserable prison to them.

They keep saying when the accident happened, that was no accident till he did that on purpose which is kind of infuriating to me because Dawn gave her life up for him and his pod. The tricks those orcas were doing on cue I couldn’t even do or remember if someone told me to choreograph a whole dance to do all day. Insanely insanely insanely smart animals! They’re just like us, right now I’m speaking English but there’s someone in Spain talking Spanish ect. These whales in all parts of the world have different languages they speak just like we do so, if you steal an orca From Alaska and put it with an orca from the Gulf of Mexico They can’t understand each other. If they had arms and legs like I said they would be taking over the world.

Toying with a angerous species is like playing with a hand grenade - a really bad idea! Reminds me of that nutty woman in the Northeast who kept a chimp as a pet. She slept with the chimp, hand fed him, took him everywhere she went until, one day, the chimp went crazy, and attacked her friend and ate her face off! She had to call the cops to shoot the crazed chimp! Her poor friend had to have multiple surgeries to rebuild her face.

It is proven fact that when a parent is most happy, be it home or work, the child(ren) will have the best life. If parents are happy and fulfilled in their work pursuits, it absolutely transfers over to the home life. It is Perfectly fine for a woman to be happiest when splitting her time between work and at home. That is an individual thing! No one should lay judgment on a woman for choosing family and career. That is unfair.
