*FYI : In the South and for many years after the plane crash, you could go into any Bar or Club that had a Live Band and before the night was through, someone would stand up in there chair and yell at the band, " Play Free Bird ".*

I was at this Concert on July 2, 1977 in Oakland. I was fortunate to have seen the original band before the horrific crash on October 20, 1977. Incredible Show!! RIP to Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, the road manager and pilots!! Lynyrd Skynyrd's music will never die!!

I was there on July 2, 1977. I lived about 45 minutes from the Oakland Coliseum. I was 17 years old and just graduated from high school. I will never forget that concert. Loved going to those Day on the Greens where you can watch two or three great bands for $11 bucks. Most people in that crowd are now grandparents and great grandparents. Loved your reaction ❤

One of THE greatest live rock performances of all time, and one of THE greatest live rock bands ever. They played with heart, soul, passion and energy, and gave everything they had every time they walked out onto a stage. They're part of what makes Classic Rock and Southern Rock so indelible. Sadly, Gary Rossington (slide guitar) is the only surviving member of the band's original lineup. To all those incredible musicians who've gone ahead of us - we'll see you all on the other side. Lynyrd Skynyrd has to be the hugest success/tragedy in the world of music, including well before the plane crash , during the crash, and afterwards, both as a band, and the individual members alike, and being as I so love their music and am so in awe of their musical skill, watching them is always a bitter sweet experience for me. Skynyrd guitarist, Gary Rossington, who plays the hypnotic slide guitar here, passed away in March 2023. R.I.P. Gary. You're as free as a bird.

It's so easy to get caught up and blown away by the outro/ensemble to forget to think about what a well-constructed piece of music this is. In the mournful beginning, the vocalist is expressing sympathy to the one he has to leave. Then the guitarists build on the sheer passion and joy the "bird" feels once he's "free". Now, imagine you were suddenly free from all care, and could actually fly. You'd start zooming and soaring all over the sky, revelling in your freedom from being earthbound and able to explore the limitless sky. That's the feeling the guitarists are expressing through their instruments. It's joyous, it's liberating, and you can understand why the "bird" in the beginning had to leave and follow its nature to be a "freebird" and fly high, even accepting that it meant leaving someone behind. The talent and energy of the musicians and the vocalist expresses and conveys the emotions beautifully and effectively to the audience. I've always said that Ronnie Van Zandt didn't just sing lyrics, he declared them.

WOW!! That was an amazing reaction Mo. Your emotional roller coaster ride was something to behold. This concert was 10 days before my 18th birthday. My band members chipped in and bought me a ticket and all 5 of us were there in the middle of that mass of humanity. I had a GREAT time and got a helluva sunburn. It was well worth it!! The one thing this video doesn't quite convey is how incredibly LOUD the concert was. The other bands on the bill that day were The Outlaws, Santana and the headliner was Peter Frampton. What a great lineup! I remember the age of 5 or 6 band stadium concerts! In 1981 my friends and I saw "The Roundup" -- .38 Special, Marshall Tucker Band, Molly Hatchet, Outlaws and Allman Brothers Band. In the hot July sun at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia.

@@Isleofskye L S was who I wanted to see. But Frampton Comes Alive was released in January of 1976 and been on the charts for a yeas and a half. Peter was hot as hot gets. L S last album Gimme Back My Bullets ( a truly dreadful album) was released a month after Frampton Comes Alive. So there was no doubt who the headliner was. The pride of Beckenham, Kent. As an American ,and a proud southerner,lynyrd skynyrd, Hank Williams Jr.,The Allman Brothers, and Stevie Ray Vaughn speak my language. Our music is a beautiful mix of blues ,country ,rock and folk that evolved into this . Many like the rolling stones have tried to copy our style, few do it justice. Us southerners love everyone and have had to live with thr stigma of racism for far to long in this country, and I'll put our music up against any other . What you initially thought was three guitarists was actually two plus the Bass guitar player but then they DID have three guitarists that were great lead guitarists! What really gets me when I watch old concert footage like this, is the crowd. Watching these young adults have such a great time, but knowing that all of them are now at least in their 60s and 70s, or sadly, no longer with us, makes it a sad video to watch. This was 45 years ago, and is a stern reminder of how little time we really have on this planet. Relish every minute of it.

The band members grew up in Jacksonville Florida. They all would play and practice for hours on end in a small shack in a back yard. Ronnie Van Zant, the lead singer who lived fast,. always said he'd never live to see his 30th birthday. His prediction did come to pass unfortunately as he and several other of the band members died in an I'll advised plane trip that that crashed . The flight was taken under treturous conditions .Ronnie Van Zant was just 29 years old.

Here's one for ya. I Saw them in 1977 at the Hanner field house in Statesboro Georgia it's a sports field house and less than a 1000 people could fit in there. I was 15 going on 16 with my sister and a friend Tommy Morris This band sang THREE encodes for less than a 1000 people and this was the last song they sang but the did it twice for us.. I can still see them in my mind . I was 3 row from the stage not 30 feet away. They had just played sold out coliseum everywhere to come to a town of 30,000 and played to us like there was 300,000 people.. Not that is one helluva band. Nothing topped them since for me that day. All I can say is Wow! Just ,Wow! RIP you guys❤

In the mid seventies the country was just coming out of Vietnam and music prior to that had a lot to do with protest and peace. This young guys used the flag to show where they were from, the south, and that they were proud of it in spite of all the negativity that was around the years before. The had no idea about the politics that would make it so controversial years later. This concert was in California. So the people there didn’t either. Just great music and lots of fun.

This was just months before their plane crash. In 10 days it'll mark 45 years since that plane crash happened, that killed singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (Steve Gaines' older sister). Highly recommend watching a documentary on the band.. Lots of profound things surrounding their story that you just have to hear yourself. Even a couple of eerie, or seemingly prophetic-like, quotes related to Ronnie's fate.

I saw them live in 75 or 76 at the Philadelphia spectrum my first concert. There are such a talented musicians and have some great songs that I still listen to. Thank you very much love your reactions😃😃 their vinyl now is still incredibly well produced and sounds great.

I grew up with this song and still get emotional listening to the slide guitar wailing in longing, the weeping piano and then the build-up. The last song I played with a band near Chicago was Freebird, on a huge professional stage with great sound, lighting and even fog. When the song built up from slow to fast, I closed my eyes and felt energy filling me up. It was electric. Then I unleashed that through my drum kit (the same as in my thumbnail) and into the audience. I played every note like my life depended on it and I was completely spent after the last two notes. My entire soul went into it and I had nothing left to give.

Such a great performance that was one of the bands last. On October 20, 1977, during a flight from Greenville, South Carolina, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s tour plane crashed in a heavily wooded area of southwestern Mississippi during a failed emergency landing attempt, killing band-members Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines as well as the band’s assistant road manager and the plane’s pilot and co-pilot. Twenty others survived the crash.

I was at that show in Oakland. I was 15, and that show was really something.
