Ron, on some cameras you can set a longer exposure time - which will normally cause everything to get much much brighter, so you have to change the aperature to let less light in or adjust the sensitivity. It can be done, but it makes for a slow frame rate, hard to capture the fast action like on Tempest. The adjusted screen looks awesome, thanks for filming! Brings back some great memories!

The camera problems you are talking about was the reason for season 2 of Stranger Things to use LCD screens in their arcade machines. If you look at the game closeups, you will notice the bezel doesn't match the screen size. Actually a bit sad they couldn't work around that for that series ^^. Dragon's Lair deserves a full size monitor. Also... Scanlines...

I seem to recall that the way to kill the walkers was to spin the knob really fast and fire just as you're quickly passing by them. Monitor looks great BTW. Tempest is an all-time classic...Atari was firing on all cylinders back in the early 80s! I really miss them :(
@LyonsArcade4 жыл бұрын
Think about how their art department or design department was operating, every single game that Atari was putting out had a killer look to it. Centipede, Dig Dug, Xevious, Star Wars, Battlezone, Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe, Tempest, The list goes on and on and on.... all the way up to the 90's they didn't really even make a game that didn't have incredible art and cabinet design that i'm aware of.
@chrisfreemesser4 жыл бұрын
@@LyonsArcade Have you read the book "The Art of Atari" by Tim Lapetino or seen the "Art of Atari Poster Collection" also by Tim? The book is an awesome look into Atari's art department back then and the posters are killer. I made some Atari 2600-esque frames and have some of the posters hanging on my office walls at work (I work in IT so this geeky stuff is expected, lol)!
@harvey666162 жыл бұрын
_"spin the knob really fast and fire just as you're quickly passing by them"_ -- that'll work if you get lucky. But the actual way to do it is to fire when your piece is immediately adjacent to the walker.

How does one sync a camera to a vector display? There is a refresh but it's going all over the place (not a raster). Thanks for the new vid, vector displays are a special kind of magic in arcade systems. Cheers,
@LyonsArcade4 жыл бұрын
Even though I work on all this old electronic stuff I'm not much of a techie, so i'm not sure... my camera can't sync to it anyways, i'm just using a point and shoot with minimal adjustments... The way I understand it yes it does refresh at a certain rate like rasters but yeah I'm not sure how you'd overcome that. It seems like you'd have to have your shutter speed set at a perfect division of whatever the refresh rate is... You might be able to do it by slightly extending the time the shutter is open, so that it would stay open long enough to catch two cycles of the refresh or whatever. I'm sure somebody with a nice camera could probably tinker with some settings long enough to get a good video.

Has anyone ever taught you how to properly use a degausing coil? I was taught you turn it on close to the center of the screen and you make a large circle with the coil over the screen and you keep making the circle as you pull it away. when you are far enough away from the screen with the coil, pull it to the side and then that's when you shut it off.
@LyonsArcade4 жыл бұрын
I've only worked on I dunno, 10 thousand arcade game monitors, how many have you degaussed again? Go correct somebody else.

@@LyonsArcadePlease check out this You-tube video on Purity errors on televisions." kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaG5fZywdq2Vr5Y&feature=emb_title. " I've only worked on say about 10 thousand Televisions from 1988 to Present. I've repaired every type of electronic device from Vcr's , televisions, Stereo's, Cd players, tape decks, 8-tracks, camcorders, you name it, I've fixed it. Televisions are my specialty. I know what I'm talking about. I know that when you move around a CRT television the screen sometimes gets messed up more than the internal degaussing coil can over-come. and just flicking on a degaussing coil for a split second will cause parts of the screen to be magnetized.
@scrapman5024 жыл бұрын
I need to make a slight correction. Make that 1986 to present. I totally forgot I took Electronics in high-school and worked on color televisions then. I also need to mention My father purchased about 14 Arcade games from a local Showbiz Pizza from when they closed in 1986 and among those games were 2 Atari Tempest, 1 Cockpit Starwars, and 1 Gravitar. I FIXED Every Single one! How old were you then? I still remember a thing or two.
@stevebabiak6997Ай бұрын
The way I was taught to turn off the degaussing coil follows. Turn the coil so that it is perpendicular to the face of the screen and oriented vertically. Then back off from the face of the screen. Turn it off when no further interaction with the display is noticeable. Also, there are additional considerations to degaussing. Most important is orientation of the display with respect to the Earth’s poles. If you change this orientation, you should degauss afterwards. Also, any metal in the case would be reason to degauss with the case on. And other electric and electronic devices nearby also could introduce magnetic interference that could be incorrectable even via degaussing.

Ron, if you turn these machines off at night, as opposed to keeping them running. Can it be problematic to keep turning them on and off? The reason I ask is 2 people I know who have these machines in their homes usually have problems crop up after turning them on that were previously working fine when they shut them off. Is this just a coincidence or could power surges from turning them on and off have something to do with it. I apologize if this is a naive question, I am not at all knowledgeable about electronics, just wondering.
@LyonsArcade4 жыл бұрын
That's a good question, I think yes sometimes when you turn them on the power surge damages some things... but leaving them on all the time is probably more damaging because of the heat and the wear on the monitor. So in my opinion it's better to turn them off and just turn them on when you're going to play them or look at them, but yeah sometimes that's going to make stuff stop working. If you leave them on all the time something is going to fail just from the heat.
